Chapter 11 - What She Couldn’t Ignore

What She Couldn't Ignore

Ella didn't sleep properly that night.

Every time she closed her eyes, the same moment replayed in her mind—the screen, the files, the brief glimpse of something that wasn't supposed to be there, and then the sudden emptiness.

It didn't feel like confusion anymore.

It felt real.

---

The next morning, she reached the office early again.

The building was quiet, almost empty, giving her the kind of silence she needed to think clearly.

She sat down, placed her bag aside, and took out the pen drive.

For a few seconds, she just looked at it.

Then she inserted it into her system.

The screen opened immediately.

There was nothing.

No folder. No file. No trace of what she had seen before.

Ella didn't react this time.

She simply removed it and inserted it again.

Still empty.

She leaned back slightly, her eyes fixed on the screen.

"This isn't normal…" she murmured under her breath.

She knew what she had seen.

And now she was sure of one thing—whatever was on that drive had been removed.

---

"Good morning."

Xavier's voice came from behind, calm and familiar.

Ella turned slightly. "Morning."

He noticed the pen drive in her hand. "You look like you didn't sleep."

She gave a faint smile. "I didn't."

"Work?" he asked.

She hesitated for a moment, then shook her head. "Something else."

Xavier pulled a chair slightly closer, lowering his voice. "Do you want to tell me?"

Ella looked at him, thinking for a second, but then she stopped herself.

"Not yet," she said. "I'm not sure."

Xavier didn't push. He simply nodded. "Then don't rush. If something is wrong, it'll show again."

His words stayed with her.

Because deep down, she knew—

This wasn't over.

---

Inside his office, Ethan had already noticed.

Ella wasn't working the way she usually did.

She was thinking more. Watching more.

And that pen drive in her hand—

It caught his attention.

He didn't ask about it.

But he didn't ignore it either.

---

A few minutes later, Liana walked into his office.

"You're early today," she said softly, placing her bag aside.

Ethan didn't respond immediately. His gaze was still directed outside.

Liana followed his line of sight and saw Ella at her desk.

A faint smile appeared on her lips.

"You're still observing her," she said gently.

Ethan looked at her. "I'm observing my team."

Liana's smile didn't fade. "Of course."

She walked a little closer, her tone soft and calm. "You've always been like this. You notice things others don't."

There was a pause before she added, "But sometimes, you notice too much."

Ethan didn't reply.

"Not everything has a hidden meaning," she continued, her voice light. "Sometimes mistakes are just mistakes."

Her words were smooth, easy to accept.

But something about them didn't fully settle.

---

Later in the day, Liana approached Ella's desk again.

"Ella, can you send me the Anderson file?" she asked, her tone gentle.

Ella nodded and opened her system.

As she searched for the file, she could feel Liana standing there, watching her.

Not casually.

Carefully.

Ella glanced up for a second, meeting her eyes.

Liana smiled.

Soft. Polite.

Unbothered.

Ella looked back at her screen. "I'll send it in a minute."

"No hurry," Liana replied.

But she didn't leave immediately.

She stayed there for a few seconds longer, as if waiting for something.

Then she walked away.

---

Ella's fingers paused over the keyboard.

Her thoughts slowed.

Then shifted.

She opened her drawer and looked at the pen drive again.

It was still there.

Unchanged.

But now it didn't feel like a random object.

It felt intentional.

---

Across the office, Ethan noticed the small pause.

The way Ella looked at the drawer.

The way she wasn't reacting the way she used to.

Something had changed.

And he couldn't ignore it anymore.

---

By evening, most of the office had cleared out.

Ella packed her things slowly, her mind still occupied.

As she stepped out of the building, her phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

She hesitated for a second, then answered.

"Hello?"

There was silence.

Then a voice.

Low. unfamiliar.

"You shouldn't be looking into things that don't concern you."

Ella froze.

Her grip tightened around the phone.

"Who is this?"

There was a brief pause.

Then the voice spoke again.

"Some mistakes… don't get corrected twice."

The call ended.

---

Ella stood there for a few seconds, her mind going completely still.

This wasn't doubt anymore.

This wasn't confusion.

This was a warning.

---

And now she knew—

She wasn't imagining anything.
