Chapter 7 - The Line He Didn’t Draw

The Line He Didn't Draw

The day moved forward, but not in the same quiet rhythm as before.

There was a new presence in the office now, and it changed things in ways no one said out loud.

Ella tried to keep her focus on work, but it wasn't as easy anymore. Xavier's desk wasn't far from hers, and every now and then, he would lean slightly toward her, asking something in a low voice, keeping things light, effortless.

"You still work the same way," he said at one point, watching her organize a report. "Always this serious."

Ella glanced at him briefly, a faint smile touching her lips. "Someone has to be."

"That used to be my line," Xavier replied, amused.

She shook her head slightly and went back to her screen, but the tension in her shoulders had eased, even if just a little.

It was small, almost unnoticeable.

But not to everyone.

---

Inside his office, Ethan stood near the glass wall, his gaze fixed outside without appearing to look at anything in particular.

But he saw enough.

He saw Xavier leaning closer.

He saw Ella respond.

He saw that slight, rare smile again.

His expression didn't change, but something in his eyes hardened.

---

The door opened softly behind him.

"Ethan," Liana's voice came, gentle and warm.

He didn't turn immediately.

"You didn't reply to my message last night."

There was no accusation in her tone, only softness.

He turned slightly then, his expression calm. "I was busy."

Liana smiled faintly and walked closer, stopping beside him. "You're always busy. That's not new."

She glanced past him toward the office floor, her eyes briefly landing on Ella and Xavier before returning to him.

"You should take a break sometimes," she continued, her voice quieter now. "You don't have to carry everything alone."

Ethan didn't respond right away.

Liana's presence was easy, familiar, something that didn't demand effort.

Very different from the storm that had quietly returned to his life.

"You used to be better at that," she added softly.

"At what?"

"At letting people in."

There was a brief pause.

Ethan's gaze shifted slightly, but his expression remained controlled. "People change."

Liana studied him for a moment, then smiled again, softer this time.

"Some things don't," she said. "You just pretend they do."

Her words lingered, but she didn't push further.

Instead, she reached for the file on his desk and adjusted it casually, her fingers brushing his hand for a brief second.

"Come for dinner tonight," she said gently. "No work. No pressure. Just… a break."

Ethan didn't pull his hand away.

He didn't react at all.

And that silence, once again, worked in her favor.

"I'll see," he replied.

Liana didn't insist.

She knew when to step back.

"That's enough for now," she said with a small smile before turning toward the door.

But before leaving, she glanced once more outside.

At Ella.

At Xavier.

And something sharper flickered behind her calm expression.

---

Outside, Xavier was still talking.

"You should come for lunch with me," he said casually. "There's a place nearby. You'll like it."

Ella hesitated slightly. "I have work."

"You always have work," he replied lightly. "It's just lunch, not a contract."

She almost smiled at that.

Almost.

"Maybe another day," she said.

Xavier didn't push. "Alright. But I'm not giving up that easily."

---

From inside, Ethan's gaze shifted again.

He had heard enough.

Seen enough.

And yet, he said nothing.

---

A while later, his voice came through the intercom.

"Ella. My office."

---

She stood up immediately and walked in, her expression returning to its usual calm.

"Yes, sir?"

Ethan looked at her for a moment, as if measuring something he couldn't define.

"The project timeline you submitted," he said, sliding a file toward her, "it needs revision."

Ella picked it up, scanning quickly.

"It's already aligned with the client requirements," she said carefully.

Ethan leaned back slightly, his gaze steady.

"Then align it again."

The words were simple.

But the tone wasn't.

Ella paused, then nodded. "Alright."

She turned to leave.

"Ella."

She stopped.

"Yes?"

A brief silence followed.

Then he said, "You seem distracted today."

Her fingers tightened slightly around the file, but her voice remained steady. "I'm focused on my work."

Ethan's eyes didn't leave her.

"Make sure it stays that way."

The meaning was clear.

Even if it wasn't spoken directly.

Ella didn't respond.

She just nodded and walked out.

---

As she returned to her desk, Xavier looked at her.

"Everything okay?" he asked.

She gave a small nod. "Yeah."

But this time—

The smile didn't come back.

---

Inside his office, Ethan stood still for a moment.

He told himself it was about work.

About discipline.

About maintaining control.

---

But deep down—

He knew it wasn't just that.

---

And outside—

Liana watched quietly from a distance.

Her expression calm.

Her thoughts anything but.

---

Because now—

She could see it clearly.

---

The line Ethan claimed didn't exist anymore—

Was still there.

---

And she had no intention of letting anyone cross it.
