Chapter 419 - The Ever-Changing State of the Ninja World

Chapter 419: The Ever-Changing State of the Ninja World

Chiba's knees hit the cold stone floor. In truth, he had been desperate to retreat into the shadows for months, but sheer terror had kept him paralyzed. Now, granted explicit permission by the Hokage himself, he could finally pull his head back into his shell without the looming threat of execution hanging over him.

"Understood! I understand perfectly!" Chiba cried out. Tears of absolute relief spilled over his cheeks. He slammed his forehead against the floorboards, kowtowing frantically toward Uchiha Akira. The dull thuds echoed through the empty hall.

"Hokage-sama is wise!" he babbled, his voice trembling with a mix of awe and total submission. "This plan is marvelous! It is flawless! This lowly one will execute your orders to the letter! I will absolutely not cause a single ripple of trouble for you, Hokage-sama!"

He pressed his face flat against the floor, not daring to look up. "Until the day the Ninja World is unified under your banner, the world will never lay eyes on the real Chiba again!"

Uchiha Akira looked down at the groveling figure. A faint, satisfied nod dipped his chin.

"Very good." His voice was smooth, yet it carried the weight of a drawn blade. "Remember your place."

Akira paused, letting the silence stretch. "But if you dare to entertain any other thoughts..."

He did not finish the sentence. He didn't need to. The suffocating killing intent bleeding from those unspoken words dropped the temperature in the room to freezing.

Chiba shuddered violently, his teeth chattering. "I wouldn't dare! I would never dare! Heaven and earth can bear witness to my absolute loyalty to Hokage-sama!"

Akira stood. He had wasted enough time on this spineless puppet. "That is enough. Handle the rest yourself."

Before the final syllable even reached Chiba's ears, Akira's silhouette blurred. The space warped, and he vanished from the grand hall, leaving behind nothing but a faint displacement of air.

Alone in the vast, empty chamber, Chiba let out a long, ragged exhale. His spine gave out, and he slumped flat against the floor, drenched in cold sweat.

Meanwhile, high within the Hokage Building of Konoha.

Sunlight streamed through the expansive windows of the Hokage's office, illuminating the towering stacks of paperwork on the desk. Tsunade sat behind it, a brush in hand, attempting to process the endless stream of government affairs. Yet, her golden-brown eyes kept drifting toward the glass, scanning the horizon. Her leg bounced in a restless rhythm.

Ever since Uchiha Akira departed, a knot of tension had pulled tight in her chest. She knew perfectly well that the man possessed a level of strength that defied logic. Logically, there was absolutely nothing to worry about.

But logic had little to do with a woman's instinct. Especially not after the subtle, obvious shift in their relationship.

"That bastard..." Tsunade muttered under her breath. She clamped her teeth down on the wooden end of her brush, leaving small indentations in the lacquer. "He said he would be back in a flash. Just how long has it been?"

A sudden, familiar ripple warped the air directly in front of her desk.

Before she could even finish her complaint, Tsunade shot to her feet. Her chair tipped backward and crashed onto the floor, but she did not spare it a single glance.

In the next second, the very figure that had been occupying her every thought stepped out of the spatial distortion.

"You are back?" The words slipped out before she could catch them.

Uchiha Akira took in her tense posture, the fallen chair, and the wide-eyed stare. A gentle, knowing smile curled the corners of his mouth.

Seeing him standing there without a single scratch, the taut strings of Tsunade's nerves snapped loose. She let out a long, heavy breath. Realizing she had exposed her worry, she immediately planted her hands on her hips, forcing a stern glare onto her face.

"So you finally remembered how to find your way back?" she demanded, her voice rising in a practiced scold. "As the Hokage, playing missing person at the drop of a hat and dumping an entire village's worth of work onto my shoulders... what kind of behavior is that!"

Despite the harsh tone, the relief and joy dancing in her beautiful eyes completely betrayed her.

Akira merely chuckled, entirely unfazed by her obvious duplicity. He bypassed the desk in a few long strides, closing the distance between them. Without a word of warning, he reached out, wrapping a strong arm around her slender waist and pulling her flush against him.

"Worried about me?" he murmured.

Tsunade's body went rigid for a fraction of a second before melting against his chest. Trapped under the intense, dark gaze of his eyes, all her imposing momentum as a legendary Sannin evaporated into thin air. A deep, touching flush spread across her cheeks.

"Who... who is worried about you!" she stammered, turning her face away to maintain her stubborn facade. "I was worried about the situation on the front lines!"

She pushed lightly against his chest, though she made no real effort to escape his hold. "By the way, how is the situation? Those two Edo Tensei Kage..."

Akira let out a low, soft laugh. His fingers brushed gently along the curve of her waist, feeling the incredible elasticity of her muscles.

"Resolved," he replied, his tone as casual as if he were discussing the weather. "The Fourth Kazekage, Rasa, and the Second Tsuchikage, Mū."

Even though she had already anticipated a victory, hearing him state it with such nonchalance sent a massive shockwave through Tsunade's heart. Those were two Kage-level monsters. One of them was the legendary Second Tsuchikage, a man who wielded the terrifying Kekkei Tōta known as Dust Release.

They were dealt with just like that? So quickly?

She looked up at Akira's pristine clothes and relaxed posture. He did not look like a man who had just fought a grueling battle against legends. He looked like he hadn't even broken a sweat.

"You guy..." Tsunade breathed out, staring at the handsome face hovering mere inches from her own. "Just how much stronger are you going to get?"

Akira lowered his head. He leaned in close, his lips brushing against the shell of her ear. His warm breath fanned across the sensitive skin, sending a visible tremor through her.

The blush on Tsunade's face deepened, spreading all the way down her neck. She let out a soft, involuntary hum, her arms sliding up to loop around his neck. Her body surrendered completely, leaning into his broad, warm embrace.

"Since it is resolved, that is good," she whispered, looking up at him. Her eyes were slightly misty, her red lips parted in an unconscious invitation. "This time... consider it a massive achievement on your part. What kind of reward do you want?"

Akira stared down at the stunning woman in his arms. The dark depths of his eyes shifted, a predatory heat flaring within them.

"A reward?" he echoed softly.

He dipped his head and captured those alluring red lips.

"Mmm..." Tsunade let out a muffled sound, putting up a purely symbolic struggle for a fleeting second before her fingers tangled in his hair, responding with fervent heat.

Outside the window, the setting sun cast a golden-orange glow over Konoha. Inside the office, the air grew thick, heavy, and undeniably intimate.

Time flowed forward, and in the blink of an eye, an entire week had passed.

To the ordinary citizens walking the streets, Konoha appeared completely peaceful. But beneath that tranquil surface, violent undercurrents were surging.

Inside the Hokage Building.

The atmosphere within the office that symbolized the absolute pinnacle of power in the Ninja World was suffocatingly heavy.

A massive military map of the continent was spread wide across the center desk, its edges weighed down by heavy scrolls. Red and blue markers were clustered tightly together, densely distributed across dozens of strategic choke points and border passes.

"The situation has shifted," Nara Shikaku announced. He stood before the table, his brow furrowed so deeply it looked carved from stone. In his hand, he gripped an urgent intelligence scroll bearing the highest priority seal.

"Hokage-sama. Lady Tsunade." Shikaku took a deep, steadying breath. He stepped forward and pressed a red wooden piece heavily onto a specific coordinate on the map.

The Land of Rice Fields.

This minor nation, sandwiched precariously between the Land of Fire and the Land of Lightning, had suddenly become the eye of a massive storm threatening to consume the entire world.

"According to the latest intelligence relayed by the Anbu and our frontline reconnaissance squads," Shikaku began, his voice grim, "the main military forces of Kumogakure and Iwagakure have completed their assembly."

He paused, his eyes scanning the map. "Not only that."

Shikaku extended a finger, tracing a wide, sweeping arc across the northern and eastern borders. "Takigakure, Kusagakure, Yugakure... these minor ninja villages that have historically survived by hiding in the cracks between the great nations have all responded to the coalition's call."

He picked up another marker, his expression darkening further. ", even the Land of Iron, a nation that has maintained strict neutrality for generations, has broken centuries of tradition. General Mifune has personally led his samurai forces into the Land of Rice Fields."

Hearing this, Tsunade, who was seated on the sofa to the side, leaned forward. A deep frown marred her features.

"The Land of Iron has joined the war as well?" she asked, her tone sharp with disbelief. "Do those samurai not pride themselves on their vow to never interfere in the wars of shinobi?"

She pushed herself off the sofa and marched over to the desk, bracing both hands against the edge. "Are they truly attempting to rally the military might of the entire continent just to besiege Konoha?"

Shikaku remained silent for a moment, his eyes locked on the topographical lines of the Land of Rice Fields. He pointed to the jagged borders.

"Along the frontier of the Land of Rice Fields, they are taking full advantage of the treacherous, mountainous terrain. They have constructed a massive, interconnected network of defensive works stretching for dozens of miles."

He tapped the map. "This is the 'Iron Wall Tactic' mentioned in our previous intelligence briefings."

As Shikaku finished his report, a heavy silence descended upon the office.

Tsunade stared at the red markers, her expression turning exceedingly grim.

It was a shameless strategy, but an undeniably effective one. In a conventional war, facing a fortified turtle shell of that magnitude forced the attacking army into a brutal meat grinder. To break through lines like that, the aggressor would often have to pay three, sometimes even five times the casualty rate of the defenders.
