The room was too quiet not the peaceful kind of quiet but the kind that pressed against your chest and made every breath feel louder than it should, every though louder than it should be and every second of the clock longer than it should be
Adrian Vale sat quietly at the head of the long conference table made form the finest and well-polished mahogany wood, a room where he once held meeting closing deals in billions and negotiating policies that influence the business world is currently sited quietly staring at a document he had already read twice and still didn't want to accept not just the terms, but also the reality of how his life is turning out.
The room smelled like polished wood and quiet authority loomed in the air. Adrian Vale hated it because it made him see his constant weakness because it was unfamiliar, he had spent years in rooms like this, closing deals that reshaped industries, but today, for the first time, he was not the most powerful man in the same room where victory and success was always secured and earned by his precision, accuracy, power and influence.
"Not anymore." The voice whispered in his head "Say it again this time aloud."
His voice was calm, but it carried an edge sharp enough to cut through the silence.
Across the table, Hassan adjusted his glasses slightly.
He had delivered bad news before many times about bad debts, wrong business ventures and legally setbacks but never like this.
"The clause remains binding," I have tried to work a way round it but to no avail.
He said carefully in a defeated voice well sad.
"It cannot be bypassed, or amended, or delayed or denied" Adrian's jaw tightened.
"I heard you the first time no need for fruitless repetitions.
There was a brief and momentary pause like he was looking for a loophole in all that was read
"Read it again."
His voice was low, controlled but there was something beneath it, something sharper like the ears of a business man seeking to hear the profits of a good deal.
Hassan didn't move immediately.
"You've already read it, sir.
"I didn't ask for your opinion just do as you are told."
A pause came between them…Then Hassan nodded once.
Picking up the document and he read. "The clause," he began carefully, 'No heir shall claim full control of the Vale legacy and fortune unless legally married. `
"In summary this states that in the absence of a legal spouse at the time of your passing, all executive control and influence transfers to the Vale Family Trust with Victor as the head, he automatically takes over to become the boss of all."
Each word felt deliberate, measured, planned and unavoidable.
"There, do you understand the implications sir."
Hassan said disappointed in his own words… Adrian leaned back slowly with motion controlled deliberately because even sitting now required precision and time to plan. Breathing demanded effort which he refused to show.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city moved unapologetically on, alive and joyfully without him. Unbothered and unaware.
Fine... Spell it out anyway,"
Adrian said. Hassan did not hesitate this time, he gave it all out the way it should be.
"If you pass away unmarried, control of Vale Industries transfers to the trust. Shared governance, multiple stakeholders, Your family especially and Victor among them as the head."
Hassan paused due to the reaction on Adrian's face, a flicker of something cold crossed Adrian's expression as if he was stab straight to the chest with a dagger. That was it, the trouble in itself.
"Which means," he said quietly,
"They take it apart piece by piece, into shreds.
"Yes, Hassan replied sharply" "No hesitation? "None."
silence fell between them, heavy with truth. Adrian's gaze drifted to the city again but this time, he wasn't seeing it. He was seeing everything he built, every negotiation, every risk, every sacrifice, Years of control… reduced to a legal technicality in just one statement.
"And Victor?" Adrian said finally.
Hassan nodded once in a disapproving manner.
"He's already positioning himself to be the boss and to take over, he already held a press briefing.
"They think I'm already gone," Adrian said.
"Not gone," Hassan corrected gently.
"Just… vulnerable." That word almost made Adrian laugh.
"I've never been vulnerable," he said
Even as he said it, He knew it wasn't entirely true anymore because he was alone and weak the primary state of vulnerability."
Of course, he would because he's a venomous viper waiting to strike. Victor Vale has never built anything, he didn't build things, he forcefully acquired them and when there was nothing left to take, He would always destroy what is left of the whole piece.
Adrian exhaled slowly with a sound which was softer than he intended, Weaker than it should have been and He hated that because it was a sign of his vulnerability and weakness.
"How long do I have left to make this decision?" he asked
Hassan who didn't answer immediately and his silence meant the answer was worse than Adrian had expected.
Your silence is an indication that something is even worse than I thought it is "Be honest."
He demanded determined to hear the true state of his health and empire.
"A few months to go," Hassan said quietly. "At best."
The words didn't echo, they didn't need to because they settled and became permanent to him. Adrian didn't react ''Not outwardly though but something shifted that led to a crack in his body and soul but behind his eyes it did not look like fear it was more of calculation and resilience.
"So, you're saying If I marry," he said, "control stays with me?"
Yes sir." No interference and external control?
Very Minimal sir, Hassan responded sharply
What's your definition of minimal."
Hassan allowed himself the smallest breath of relieve before he continued
Sir, you retain primary authority of all, the clause is satisfied and the structure remains intact.
"And if I don't?"
Hassan didn't hesitate, he gave it all out like bad news from a failed business venture.
"You lose everything." There it was simple and final.
Adrian closed his eyes for a brief moment not long enough to be seen as weakness but just long enough to think, calculate and decide.
This sounds so absurdly simple in fact rather too simple to be true as Adrian let out a quiet humorless laugh. "All this fuss narrows down to an inconsequential ring that holds no importance or value to me. I have spent my entire life making sure I needed no one,"
Adrian continued, his voice quieter and now in regret but not shown entirely.
"And in the end… everything depends on someone I don't even have.
Legally sir it holds all the value and importance you could ever think of or even imagine," Hassan replied, "So yes you need that someone but it could be anyone, the clause doesn't state who and for how long you have known each other.
Adrian turned his head slightly, his reflection staring back at him in the glass, He barely recognized the man he saw in it and he began to wonder where the man who once dominated boardrooms was? Because now he only measured time in medication and cycles and from the time lines of clinical experts.
Marriage huh! he scoffed
The word felt foreign, unnecessary, pointless and baseless Until now.
"I don't have time to build anything with anyone for real," Adrian said.
"That isn't required, Hassan replied in a low tone".
No. It isn't.
This, is not about love, or companionship, don't mistake this for a moment of weakness," Adrian said. "I'm not suddenly interested in companionship or about any human.
This was strategy and a means to an end for survival nothing more.
"Should I find someone suitable," Hassan offered.
Adrian shook his head slightly showing agreement without arguing for the first time in years
"Not suitable."
Hassan frowned almost immediately due to confusion.
"You just shook your head in agreement and now you say No?
"I don't want 'suitable,'" Adrian said.
"I want efficient he said as
He took a pause…
Someone who would understand the terms, boundaries and silence.
"And loyalty?" Hassan asked,
Adrian's gaze hardened.
"Loyalty can be bought for the right amount on the table."
Shocked about his mind set and words but Hassan didn't argue because in Adrian's world that had always been true but something about this felt different and uncertain, more fragile, more… unpredictable.
"What are you proposing?" Hassan asked
Adrian leaned forward slightly, ignoring the strain in his body.
"A contract."
Hassan's brows drew together in awe
"A marriage contract," Adrian continued.
"Clear terms, defined duration and a precise financial benefit.
"Until… Hassan asked?"
Adrian didn't blink or flitch a bit
"Until I die, he said."
The words landed harder than anything else said in the room all through the night, even Adrian felt it but he made sure there was no show of emotions or feelings whatsoever.
"And the compensation?" Hassan asked carefully
Adrian didn't hesitate as he responded
"Make it worth the inconvenience.
"How much?"
There was a brief pause…Then the response hit the room
"500 million."
Hassan went still as he froze in shocked but aware of what that meant.
"Sir this would definitely attract attention," he said.
"Not if it is handled properly in a subtle manner by the right means and correctly.
"And what if the wrong person responds to this and is picked?"
Adrian's expression didn't change—he only gave a stern look
That simply means we have to be extremely carefully in the selection."
Silence and uncertainty and a bit of confusion and shock stretched again.
Then Hassan nodded once in response Decision made.
"I would carefully draw up a contract in preparation to it."
Adrian leaned back, his energy fading slightly but his mind sharper than ever.
"Please make sure you keep it private,"
he added. "No media and no noise.
"Of course, sir I would personally see to it.
"And Hassan..."
He paused. Just briefly.
"For both our sakes do not bring me someone predictable or famous.
"That caught Hassan off guard… Adrian's gaze shifted back to the city.
"I need someone who won't break easily."
Something in his tone made it clear that he didn't build an empire out of poor decisions--- This wasn't absolutely just about the contract anymore… It was ultimately about survival and protection of built legacy.
Hassan gathered the file, already moving toward the door.
"It will be done just as you have demanded sir."
Adrian turned his face slightly, looking out at the city again His gaze drifted to the reflection in the glass for a moment he didn't see the billionaire or the strategist or the man everyone feared he saw something else a man running out of time…
Making a decision he never thought he would be needing, looking out seeing people moving, living, laughing, fighting and loving, the exact same things he had postponed, all the things he had told himself he would have time for later, when he had the time, they were all dashed in the hope of misery because there was no hope of later for him any longer.
The door closed behind him and the room felt empty again. Adrian sat there for a long time, longer than he intended just like that the decision was made. Adrian Vale was going to get married not for love, not for legacy but because, for the first time in his life He was running out of time and truly hoped somewhere in the city that someone desperate enough would answer or maybe somewhere somehow in the city, someone's life would collide with his.
