The parking space was half-full with cars. The evening air was cool but not cold. Anthea hugged the jacket Roman had given her closer to her body. Roman stopped next to a row of vehicles and pulled a key fob from his pocket. He clicked a button. A black G-wagon beeped twice, and its lights flashed.
"Whoa! You own this, too?" Anthea asked.
"Yeah," Roman smiled. He walked ahead and opened the passenger door. "Get in."
Anthea slid onto the leather seat. The interior smelled like a new car and a faint vanilla air freshener. Roman closed her door and walked around the front of the vehicle. He got into the driver's seat and shut his door. Instead of starting the engine, he reached behind him into the backseat. His hand came back holding a bouquet wrapped in brown paper. He turned and held it out to her.
Anthea gasped. She brought the flowers to her face and inhaled deeply. The scent was sweet and familiar. Peonies mixed with white roses. Her favorites.
