The supply house on Callen Row was run by a woman named Doss who had been old for as long as anyone in the lower city could remember and showed no signs of changing that. She sat behind her counter the way certain buildings sat on their foundations — like she had not been placed there so much as grown there, over time, through some slow geological process.
She looked at Kreil's list without touching it.
"Maret's order."
"Maret's supplies," he confirmed. "Her shop was in the Dock Ward rift last night."
Doss looked at him over the list. She had eyes the color of old coins and they didn't miss much. "I heard. I also heard she's into the Redline for three months' lease."
"I'm not here about the lease."
"No, you're here about the supplies. And the supplies cost what they cost." She finally picked up the list, read it properly. "Suture thread I have. Antiseptic I have. Saline's going to cost you because it came in on the last northern shipment and the next one's three weeks out."
"How much for everything?"
She told him. It was almost exactly what he had. Not quite — four coins short — but almost.
He put what he had on the counter.
Doss looked at it. Looked at him. Made a sound in her throat that could have meant anything and probably meant she was going to do something she'd frame as good business rather than charity. She took the coins and turned to her shelves.
"The saline's old stock," she said, her back to him. "I'll give you two units at old-stock price. Don't tell anyone. I have a reputation."
"I've never heard of you," Kreil said.
She made the sound again and he was fairly sure this time it was a laugh.

He delivered the supplies to the shelter and left before Maret could try to argue with him about them. He knew from experience that argument was a territory she controlled more effectively than he did, and he had a shift to get to.
The restaurant where he worked evenings was called The Lamplit, which was a name that managed to be both accurate and aspirational — it was lit, primarily, by lamps, and the name suggested the kind of warm intimate atmosphere that the owner, Tarch, was perpetually trying to manufacture through aggressive decoration. The walls were paneled in dark wood. The tables were close together the way expensive restaurants were supposed to be close together, though at The Lamplit this was less a stylistic choice than a consequence of the room's actual dimensions. There were always flowers on the tables, fresh ones, because Tarch had a deal with a florist two streets over that Kreil had never asked about.
Kreil had never asked about a lot of things at The Lamplit.
He came in through the service entrance, hung his coat on the hook that was his by unspoken convention, and tied his apron with the efficiency of four years of repetition. The kitchen was already at its evening pitch — the particular organized chaos of a small restaurant that was fuller than its design intended, all heat and sharp smells and the percussion of metal on metal.
"You're two minutes early," said a voice behind him.
He turned. Sela was refilling the condiment tray with the focused attention she gave to all tasks, large and small. She was the other floor staff, had been for longer than Kreil, and had developed as a result either great wisdom or great fatalism about the nature of their employment — he'd never been entirely sure which.
"Is that a problem?"
"It's notable. You're usually exactly on time. Never early, never late. It's almost mechanical." She set down the condiment tray and looked at him with the mild interest she applied to things she found slightly unusual. "Bad day?"
"Median day," he said.
"Hm." She picked up the tray again. "Table six has been there since fifth hour. They're on their third round of the not-illegal wine and they've started talking about politics. Tarch wants eyes on them."
"What kind of politics?"
"The kind that makes Tarch sweat."
Tarch, in Kreil's experience, sweated about most things, but political conversation in his dining room occupied a specific category of anxiety. The Lamplit existed in a particular ecosystem — a licensed establishment on the edge of the entertainment district, close enough to the Promenade to attract a certain kind of clientele, far enough from the Silken Nine's primary territory that Tarch had, so far, maintained the difficult fiction of operating independently. Political talk that went the wrong way could change that. It could attract attention from any number of directions, all of them expensive.
Kreil took the floor.

Table six was three men and a woman, all in the kind of clothes that cost enough to look like they didn't. The woman was doing most of the talking. She had the clipped, precise diction of someone educated in the upper districts and the kind of angular bone structure that made her expressions read more sharply than she probably intended. Kreil cleared the adjacent table and did not appear to listen.
"—the Voss family has been sitting on that import license for eight months," she was saying. "Eight months. And in that time, three new distilleries in the northern quarter have been shuttered. That is not coincidence. That is a coordinated—"
"Lena." One of the men said it quietly, the way you said someone's name when you wanted them to remember where they were.
The woman — Lena — glanced around the room with the practiced casualness of someone who had been reminded before. Her eyes crossed Kreil briefly and moved on. People's eyes tended to do that. It was, in its way, useful.
"The point," she said, more quietly, "is that someone is going to have to say something. Officially. Before the next council session. And none of the members with the standing to say it are saying it, which means either they're bought or they're afraid, and I'm not sure which is worse."
"Bought is recoverable," said the second man, who had the tired pragmatism of someone who had been in rooms like this for a long time. "Afraid isn't."
Kreil took the cleared dishes to the kitchen and said nothing to Tarch, who was watching the service window with the expression of a man calculating risk in real time. When Kreil came back out, table six had shifted to a discussion of someone's upcoming engagement and the woman named Lena was drinking her wine with the focused deliberateness of someone setting aside a conversation for later.
He filed the Voss family name away in the back of his mind. The Ashen Court. He knew the name the way everyone in the lower city knew it — as a fact of the landscape, like the tram lines or the rift response sirens. Dorian Voss controlled the illegal liquor supply at the source, which meant he controlled, indirectly, almost everything else that moved through channels like The Lamplit. Whether Tarch knew the full shape of that arrangement or simply knew enough to be cautious, Kreil had never been sure.
He was starting to think he should be more sure about more things.

The shift ran long. A party of eight arrived forty minutes before close and ordered as though time were a concern that applied to other people, and Tarch, who could refuse things in theory but rarely in the practice of it, let them stay. By the time Kreil had cleared and reset and gotten his coat from the hook, the city's nighttime had settled into its deeper register — the hour when the trams stopped and the street noise thinned to the particular sounds of people who were out because they chose to be rather than because they had to be.
He took the Promenade route back toward his building. It was longer than the underpass but he wasn't tired enough to want the fastest option yet — there was a particular kind of weariness that needed to be walked down before it would let you sleep, and tonight had given him that kind.
The Promenade at this hour was its own thing. The legitimate entertainment venues had mostly closed, but the ones that operated under the fiction of being something else — private clubs, member associations, late-running restaurants with very selective clientele — were still lit. Jazz leaked from behind heavy curtains. A man in evening clothes stood outside a lacquered door having a conversation that required him to keep his back to the street. Two women in sequined dresses moved past Kreil with the brisk efficiency of people who knew exactly where they were going and had done this walk many times.
He was halfway down the Promenade when he became aware of the footsteps.
Not immediately behind him. Three people back, maybe four — someone who had learned to pace themselves at a distance that felt natural. Kreil knew this pace. He'd used it himself often enough when he didn't want to be noticed noticing something.
He didn't change his speed. Didn't look back. He turned left at the Casten Street junction instead of continuing straight — a longer route home, plausible enough if you didn't know his habits, and he had no reason to assume this person knew his habits.
The footsteps turned left at Casten Street.
So. Not a coincidence then.
He ran through his options with the calm efficiency of someone who had been in variations of this situation before and had learned that panic was a luxury that cost more than it was worth. He had no power to call on — that was the baseline, always, the condition everything else had to account for. He had the layout of this street, which he knew reasonably well. He had the hour, which was late enough that there were fewer witnesses but also fewer complications. He had the fact that if whoever was behind him had wanted to do something immediately harmful, they'd had better opportunities than a well-lit stretch of the Promenade.
That last point was either reassuring or it wasn't, depending on what they wanted.
He turned right into the narrow service passage that ran between the back of the Casten Street shops and the residential block behind them. It was darker here, and tighter, and if someone with shadow threading ability were following him this would be a terrible place to have led them. He filed that thought away as something to think about later and focused on the end of the passage, which opened onto Maren Court, which had three exits.
The footsteps followed him into the passage.
And then stopped.
Kreil stopped too.
The passage was quiet. He could hear his own breathing and, distantly, the muffled jazz from the Promenade. He turned around slowly.
There was no one there.
He stood in the empty passage for a long moment, looking at the nothing behind him, and felt the particular discomfort of a situation that had resolved itself in a way that raised more questions than it answered. Someone had followed him, deliberately, for three city blocks. And then simply… stopped.
Or hadn't stopped so much as stopped being heard.
He thought about Fen Adara, the Redline's second, and her ability to move through shadows. He thought about Daven Holt, the Silken Nine's fixer, and his ability to erase his presence entirely. He thought about a dozen other people in this city whose abilities would make following someone and then vanishing trivially easy.
He thought: someone wanted me to know I was being followed.
The information was deliberate. The following, the turning, the passage — someone had wanted him to understand that he was visible, that his movements were known, and then had chosen to demonstrate they could disappear at will.
It was a message. He just didn't know yet who had sent it or what it meant.
He walked the rest of the way home without incident, which somehow felt less like safety and more like permission.

His building was a six-floor residential block on the outer edge of the middle district — technically middle district, practically lower city, the kind of address that sat in the seam between designations and benefited from the ambiguity. The elevator had been broken for eleven months. He took the stairs.
His room was on the fourth floor. It was small enough that the furniture — a narrow bed, a table, a chair, a set of shelves he'd built himself from salvaged wood — had been arranged not by preference but by the logic of what fit. The window looked out onto the building's inner courtyard, which was not scenic but was quiet, and quiet was worth more than scenic.
He sat on the edge of the bed and looked at his hands.
Twenty-six years old. Null-classified. Three jobs. A room that fit him the way a box fits what's put inside it, functional and nothing more. The registration appointment next Tuesday that would tell him, for the fourth time, what he already knew.
And now: someone asking about him by description. Something large moving between the factions. A woman named Lena at table six talking about the Voss family's grip on the liquor supply. A follower who had wanted to be noticed and then chosen to vanish.
Kreil was not, by nature, a dramatic person. He did not tend toward the interpretation of events that made them larger than they were. He had found, over twenty-six years, that most things that looked significant were coincidences wearing significance's clothes, and that the habit of treating every coincidence as meaningful was a good way to exhaust yourself before anything actually happened.
But.
Three coincidences in a single day, all pointing at him, in a city where he had spent four years being carefully invisible — that was a pattern, and Kreil believed in patterns.
He lay back on the bed without undressing and stared at the ceiling and let the day settle into its component parts. The examiner's careful look. Vey's warning. Maret's information about the Runner asking questions. The woman at table six. The footsteps on Casten Street.
What did a null-classified nobody have that five criminal empires, a city government in quiet collapse, and an unknown follower with probable magical ability all found interesting?
He didn't know.
But somewhere in the city, in one of the towers or the speakeasies or the government buildings or the rift-lit warehouse districts, someone did. And they'd decided that today was the day to start making sure he knew they knew.
Kreil closed his eyes.
Sleep came faster than it should have, given everything. It always did. He'd never thought much about that before.
He didn't think about it now.
He dreamed of thread — thousands of threads, silver and gold and colors he didn't have names for, stretching in every direction across a dark so complete it had texture. He was standing in the middle of them and they were all moving, all connected, all pulling toward something he couldn't see. And at the edges of the dark, something vast and amused watched him stand there among all those threads and not once reach out to touch them.
Not yet.
