Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Fractured Protection

Way before Isabella was dragged back into Lorenzo De Luca's world, the illusion of her safety had already begun to quietly crack in subtle ways she didn't immediately recognize. For all the years Isabella had lived as Elena Rossi, and had made sure of one thing which was to remain invisible.

Isabella had moved around carefully making sure not to stay in one place for too long, never forming connections that could be traced and most importantly; to never do anything to draw attention to herself or her son, Matteo. She enrolled him in a small, discreet private daycare and made sure to give them strict instructions that no visitors were allowed to access her son without her permission, no personal information must be shared and no other forms of deviations from routine.

To Isabella, that was safe and controlled enough but in her world, safety was always temporary and what she didn't know was that she had been watched for weeks. It had started with something small; a man that always sat across the street every morning, pretending to read a newspaper as Isabella brought Matteo to the daycare. A car that appeared twice in the same week and the call that once came from the daycare asking to confirm her identity, which was something they had never done before.

Individually, they meant nothing but together, they were a pattern and someone was already putting the pieces together and the moment Isabella stepped into Lorenzo's gala, everything accelerated.

Her presence in that building didn't just expose her to Lorenzo, it exposed her to everyone watching him. In the mafia world, Lorenzo De Luca was not just a powerful man; he was a target and every movement around him was monitored, every unfamiliar face noted.

And Isabella?

She was unforgettable.

The facial recognition systems flagged her as surveillance teams cross-checked her movements and within hours, the ghost of Isabella Romano who was once presumed dead resurfaced in quiet, dangerous circles.

Orders were given to follow her and confirm the identity. They didn't approach her immediately as they needed to first figure out what she was hiding. They waited because they knew people like Isabella didn't just come back alone, they always had something to protect.

And that "something" was far more valuable than she was.

So while Lorenzo was confronting her at the gala, while tension and past emotions filled that room, another operation was already in motion far from his control and attention.

A Black SUV with tinted glass pulled up outside the daycare where Matteo attended. With no rush or chaos, they moved precisely and professionally.

Inside, Matteo sat quietly with the other children, unaware that anything was wrong as his small, fragile hands clutched a toy car, his attention fixed on something simple and safe, something that would soon be taken from him.

The door to the daycare didn't burst open immediately because men like these didn't act recklessly. They just walked in calmly and controlled.

One of them smiled at the receptionist.

"Hi… we're just here to carry out routine checks," he said smoothly, flashing a badge that looked real enough.

And for a moment…

It worked but something shifted with questions being asked by the daycares management and that was when everything changed as their patience reached its limits and time was no longer on their side.

Outside, another vehicle pulled up, its engines idling. Inside, one of the men glanced at his watch and then at his partner in silent exchange.

And that was when the door was about to be broken open because this was never just surveillance, it was extraction and Matteo was the target.
