Moldy bread.
What even is mold? Some kind of tiny creature? It seems to appear from nothing.
It tastes awful man, totally stale and rotten. Moldy even.
Still, something is better than nothing. The Coppergate district has been adding more guards lately—picking pockets is getting harder, especially on an empty stomach.
The smell of it though... it's odd.
"Hey Lara? We should get moving soon—"
Maren. "Oh maren—! I got lost thinking about mold, it smells kind of funny?"
She's looking at me like I've lost my mind.
"That smell is probably just the streets. They built sewers through here, and the Vellin district dumps their communal waste around this area, so—"
Oh.
That's revolting. I've completely lost my appetite. Thanks for that, Maren.
"Let's get out of here —eugh—doesn't the smell bother you more? Your nose is sharper than mine."
She's giving me Another look. "I'm a feline, so yes it's stronger than what a human would pick up, but I'm not a canine that I'll lose my mind here."
I mean don't blame me, feline and canine demihumans have similar ears, one can make mistakes!
Although I'm sure Maren will hit me if I say that.
"Cobb managed to grab some good supplies from Gutterwalk street today. Should be interesting to go through them. He was talking bout showing them to you-"
New supplies?
"What did he get? Some new drugs he's gonna be high on?"
"Not that, idiot. You'll find it out soon. It's not that special so don't get agitated." Wonder what it could be.
Now that I'm walking, the streets have really changed from recent years. There are a lot more people in this city now — it was always crowded though? Somehow it's different now.
"What's up? You seem out of touch today." Maren.
What a weird day to be absorbed, "Nothing. I was... thinking how much things have changed."
She's smiling? Heh, "It's going to be okay. Don't worry about your mother much. We will save her—She will be okay."
She is patting my head. Dramatic, I'm going to cry this way.
"Goddess milin is kind to the kind hearted— and believers."
"Yeah. She will be okay."
Do I believe that? I don't know.
I don't know if the gods care about us mortals anymore——but if they do,
I'll pray for that chance.
