One day, a big spacecraft stood on Earth ready to go to the moon. Four astronauts sat inside. Their names were Commander Evans, Dr. Aris Thorne, Pilot Lena Petrova, and Engineer Mark Chen. Everyone at the control center was watching. The countdown began, and then fire came out from the bottom of the spacecraft. It lifted up slowly and went higher and higher into the sky. The astronauts felt a strong push against their bodies. Soon, the spacecraft left Earth's air behind and everything became silent. The astronauts could see Earth from their window. It looked like a big blue ball. They were floating inside the spacecraft, and it was fun. Commander Evans checked all the machines, and everything was working well. Dr. Thorne looked at the stars through the window and was very happy. Lena Petrova talked to the people on Earth and told them everything was okay. Mark Chen checked the engine systems and made sure all the controls were ready for the journey.
The spacecraft traveled for three days. The astronauts ate food from small bags and slept in sleeping bags tied to the wall. On the third day, they saw the moon. It looked big and grey and was full of holes called craters. The spacecraft went into orbit around the moon, which means it started going around the moon in a circle. Commander Evans, Dr. Aris Thorne, and Engineer Mark Chen got ready to go down. They went into a smaller spacecraft called the lander. Pilot Lena Petrova stayed in the main spacecraft to wait for them up above. The lander separated and started going down towards the moon. Commander Evans flew the lander carefully while Mark Chen watched the machines and Dr. Thorne looked out the window. Dust flew up as they got closer to the ground. The lander touched the moon softly, and Commander Evans said, "We have landed." Everyone on Earth clapped and cheered. Lena Petrova from above confirmed that the landing looked perfect.
The three astronauts waited for some time and put on their heavy space suits. The suits would help them breathe on the moon. They checked their helmets and gloves, and everything was ready. Commander Evans opened the door and climbed down a small ladder. He put his foot on the moon and said, "This is one small step for a man." Dr. Thorne came down next, and then Mark Chen followed. All three of them stood on the moon. The ground was grey and dusty, and the sky was black, not blue like on Earth. They could see Earth far away in the sky. It looked small and beautiful. The astronauts felt very happy and started their work.
First, they took out the USA flag. Commander Evans held the flag pole and pushed it into the ground. The flag stood up straight. It was a proud moment. Then, Dr. Thorne said, "Let us start our work." Everyone agreed. They had many things to do. Their first job was to collect soil. Dr. Thorne took out a small shovel, bent down, and picked up some grey dust. He put the dust into a white bag and wrote on the bag to mark it. Commander Evans collected rocks. He found small stones and big stones and put them into special containers. Mark Chen set up a small camera that sent pictures to Earth. He also placed a machine on the ground to measure moonquakes. They worked slowly and carefully because the space suits were heavy and moving was not easy. But they were happy to be on the moon. They jumped a little because the gravity was low, and they could jump high very easily. It was fun. People on Earth watched them through the camera with big smiles.
The astronauts kept working for a long time. Dr. Thorne collected many soil samples from different places. Commander Evans walked further to find unique rocks. Mark Chen set up more experiments and took photos of everything. They were doing important work. Suddenly, something changed. Dr. Thorne looked up and saw something in the black sky. It was a rock moving very fast. It was a meteor, and it was coming towards the moon. Dr. Thorne shouted, "Look!" Commander Evans and Mark Chen looked up too. They all saw the meteor. It was bright and fast. The meteor hit the ground far away. There was no sound because there is no air on the moon, but they saw dust rise up in a big cloud. It was a big hit. The ground shook a little, and all three astronauts felt the shake. They were surprised and stopped their work for a moment.
Commander Evans looked towards the place where the meteor had hit. His eyes were wide with curiosity. He turned to the others and said, "Let us go there." He wanted to see the crater and the place where the meteor had struck. He thought it would be interesting and maybe they could find new kinds of rocks. But Dr. Thorne was not so sure. He shook his head and replied, "Usually, the meteors will fall many times on the moon, so do not care about it." He thought it was a normal thing and that they should focus on their planned work. He did not want to waste time or take any risks. Commander Evans listened, but he still felt curious. Mark Chen stood between them, not sure what to say. For a moment, everyone was quiet. Then, Commander Evans made his decision. He said, "I am going." He started walking towards the place where the meteor had hit. Dr. Thorne and Mark Chen watched him go. They were worried but also knew that Commander Evans was very experienced. They decided to wait and continue their work nearby. Commander Evans walked alone across the grey surface, stepping carefully, heading towards the unknown.
