Nerco Chaos was being annoyed by Beta Tester 3939 when it happened. That day when everyone was forcefully logged out and then logged back in. The day that everyone learned the full truth about The Decagon and Avelon. That they were trapped within a game that contained a game, and that to not die, that all ten thousand players had to hunt down nine players that were now the demons.
Nerco discovered that they were now one of the nine demons themselves, as they were a demon that would fit their family. Not a hundred percent perfectly, as they were not a toxic or poisonous demon per se. Though with a title like Bane of the Phoenix and their family name, one would expect that they picked a demon form to match the legacy of their bloodline. That would have been true if it was any other member of their family besides them, as what Nerco picked as their demon form was actually a skunk. Thus, they were a massive kaiju size skunk demon now.
With access to every ability and skill in the game, they could still become what they were expected to be and what they were raised to be. However, that is not the path they took as a result of their becoming one of the nine demons. With their ability to have their true demon form and their humanoid demon form, they were able to do what they always wanted to do as a result. They were no longer being monitored by their family like they were before. No one knew who the nine demons were exactly, minus the one that openly and foolishly was taking advantage of their status. A short term goal with long consequences, as Nerco Chaos was not sure why they were doing that. It did not make sense, as eventually the power they have will make them nothing more than a massive target if they are not careful. There was a reason they were both tasked with wiping out the other and/or converting them to their side.
Making themselves known as demons was not Nerco's plan. They had a different idea in mind, as they were finally able to pursue their true interest, and that being they were able to explore healing, antidotes, and basically everything that was the opposite of their family purpose for centuries. They had the perfect cover to do this, as who would guess that someone who called themselves Nerco Chaos: Bane of the Phoenix was basically a healer/white mage.
That's pretty much what Nerco did, as being a demon now they did not have to deal with the effects of the region they were in anymore. Though that was less of a problem for them in the first place because they had built their character to match what was expected of their family after all. Poison and toxic based, thus they were equipped to venture into the more dangerous areas of the Eight Region and even the starting area itself for very short periods of time.
This is how they started living their double life, not just as a demon that was now pretending they were still nothing more than just a normal player. No, they were doing something else on top of that, as they were a member of a famed toxicology family that continued to play the role of a dutiful member of the family. They were not the only one from the family here after all. That being said, they might not even be the only one from the family that was also a demon as well. Though Nerco would be able to instantly know it was them from just what kind of demons they were now. Anyone else from their family would have picked something that stood out, at least to another family member, after all.
Nerco's demon form being a skunk, however, that would not stick out as much since skunks were not exactly poisonous or toxic beings per se. They could fall under the broader sense of the two words, as maybe not the literal definition of the words but still fitting in some ways. After all, skunks were feared for a reason, as they might not fit the traditional terms. They still were a walking warning sign after all, as getting sprayed by a skunk was no joke.
Nerco having access to everything, be it skills or abilities, meant they could make that way but actually went the reverse instead. As that's how they managed to become low key one of the biggest researchers on developing counters and healing items to poisons and toxins that plagued the Eighth Region. They were not the only demon that was seen as helpful to players, despite being something meant to kill them or being killed by them all after.
It was different than Kuzas Ivako's plan to just dominate their own region alone after all. They never left their region, where they were reigning supreme for the time being at least. Since they had a humanoid form that allowed them to remain in their demon form but the size of a player still. They could blend in this way, as not revealing themselves as a demon but merely one of their followers. Offering something of value that could be a use for the players was something that got them both placed lower on the list of demons to go after. Why go after the demon that is actively helping you get stronger to take down other demons, after all?
Nerco and the other demon that was doing this were different in their approaches, though, as Nerco was actually being helpful for the sake of being helpful. This was what they wanted to do rather than what their family was known for. It was helpful in a sense, as toxicology did help people, but the family did not explore that aspect and actively avoided ever being truly helpful in the traditional sense.
The other demon that was being helpful to the players was actually playing a long game that, depending on how one looked at it, could be considered toxic and dangerous. Very much so, given what their 'help' would allow if things went according to their plan fully.
