Chapter 7 - The Eyes That Watch

The night didn't end when the doors closed. It lingered—heavy, unsettled.

Aphrodite didn't move for a long time after Nikklaus left. The room felt colder without him. Or maybe… it just felt emptier.

Her arm throbbed where it had been twisted, pain pulsing through her with every small movement. Her ribs ached. Her breathing wasn't steady yet. But she stayed standing.

She always did.

Queen Alaria watched her closely—too closely.

"You didn't break," she said, her tone quieter now. Not impressed. Not pleased. Curious.

Aphrodite lowered her gaze. "No, your majesty."

Alaria stepped forward slowly. There was no rush in her movements now. No anger that made it worse.

"Tell me something," she said, circling her. "Why?"

Aphrodite frowned slightly. "Why what, your majesty?"

Alaria stopped behind her. "Why don't you cry?"

Silence.

Aphrodite's fingers tightened slightly at her sides. "I do," she said softly.

Alaria leaned closer. "I've never seen it."

Aphrodite swallowed. "That doesn't mean it doesn't happen."

Another pause—longer this time.

Alaria stepped back. Her gaze sharpened again, but now there was something else behind it. Something calculating.

"You're changing," she said.

Aphrodite's breath hitched slightly, but she didn't respond. Alaria smiled—not warm, not kind. Interested.

"I don't like things I can't control."

That… was the truth.

Outside the room, Nikklaus hadn't gone far. He stood in the shadow of the corridor, unmoving, his presence hidden but very much there—listening, feeling.

His jaw tightened slightly as he heard every word, every shift in tone, every breath Aphrodite tried to steady.

His wolf stirred again.

"You left her."

"I didn't leave," Nikklaus muttered under his breath.

"You walked away."

His eyes darkened. "For now."

Silence followed.

You felt it too, his wolf added. She's not like the others.

Nikklaus didn't answer immediately—because that part was true.

Back inside the room, Alaria moved toward the door.

"Get cleaned up," she said lightly. "We have guests again tomorrow." She paused, then added, "And try not to embarrass us."

The door opened and closed. And just like that—Aphrodite was alone.

The silence returned, but this time… it wasn't the same.

Aphrodite's legs gave out slightly, and she sank down slowly, catching herself against the wall before she fully collapsed. Her breathing finally broke—shaky, uneven.

Her hand moved to her arm carefully, her fingers brushing over the pain, and this time she winced.

"…it hurts," she whispered.

Not to anyone. Just… out loud. Her eyes burned. Tears gathered—but she wiped them away quickly.

"No," she whispered again, firmer this time. "I'm okay."Even if she wasn't.

Outside, Nikklaus closed his eyes briefly. He heard that, every word. Something in his chest tightened again—stronger now, harder to ignore.

His wolf didn't speak this time. It didn't need to. Nikklaus opened his eyes, and this time there was no hesitation in them.

"Not yet…" he murmured—but the words didn't carry the same certainty anymore.

Because something had already begun.

Something he wasn't fully controlling anymore.

Far above—beyond the clouds, beyond what anyone could see—something moved.

Silent, Watching, Waiting. And soon—

everything would change.

What is Queen Alaria starting to notice… and why does it make her uneasy?

Why can't Nikklaus walk away completely—and what happens when he stops holding back?

And what is watching from beyond… and why is it waiting for Aphrodite?
