Chapter 39 - Magical Girl Jogo-chan

Satoru Gojo was, at this moment, at something of a loss for words.

He genuinely didn't know what to say.

Because in all his years as the strongest sorcerer of the modern era, he had faced enemies of every conceivable kind — every shape, every form, every variety imaginable. But he had truly, truly never seen anything like this.

"Magical Girl Jogo — Transform!"

The color of the flames — shifted to pink.

The shape of the flames — became hearts.

The light in the white-haired girl's crimson pupils blazed wild and unconstrained. Around her, hearts formed from condensed fire drifted through the air like soap bubbles.

Cursed Energy surged forth with a sparkle-sparkle sound effect — dazzling, resplendent — then converted itself wholesale into extreme heat.

"In the name of love and justice — I will destroy you!! ——"

BOOM——!!

Fire erupted toward the sky.

A pillar of pink flame shot straight into the night sky. This blaze was many times — many, many times — more ferocious than any strike Jogo had unleashed before.

And the girl rose into the air within the fire pillar, floating upward.

She closed her eyes. She spread her arms wide.

The flames first consumed the white-haired girl's tattered hoodie and jeans — fabric turning to ash the instant it made contact with that torrent of Cursed Energy. Then the surging fire, as though it had taken on a life of its own, began to writhe, coil, and cling to her body, weaving itself into a layer of flowing flame.

Cursed Energy and fire fused together, solidifying into tangible matter.

Then — transformation.

A skirt hem. A waist sash. Gloves. Each piece condensed from the fire and took shape, one by one.

Her hair was changing too. The short white strands began to grow wildly — extending, lengthening — falling all the way down to her waist. The color shifted gradually from silver-white to a deep, vivid rose-red, as though fire had ignited it from within.

The Cursed Energy fluctuations surged violently upward.

Wildly. Unreasonably. Exploding upward without restraint.

As the long rose-red hair billowed and danced, waves of searing heat condensed before her — churning, compressing — and finally coalesced into a single pink staff. At its tip was set a large, crimson heart-shaped gemstone.

Jogo's ruby-red eyes snapped open. Her gaze sharpened. She reached out and seized it — five fingers closing tight around the staff's grip.

Then she gave it a single sweeping flourish, striking an opening pose like a ballet dancer.

Every flame surrounding her vanished at that gesture — as though a stage curtain had been violently thrown open — revealing her fully transformed figure in its entirety.

A crimson short skirt, its hem trimmed with a ring of delicate flame motifs. A white corset and a short crimson cape, a heart-shaped ruby brooch pinned at the collar.

Both hands clad in white opera gloves reaching past the elbow, their edges embroidered with golden flame patterns.

Crimson red boots on her feet, the shafts extending up past her knees.

Rose-red long hair drifted in the night wind. Tucked in her hair was a small crown-shaped headpiece, its center set with a heart-shaped ruby that matched the one on her staff.

Crimson eyeshadow swept outward from the corners of her eyes, making those scarlet pupils burn all the more intensely — like two small, blazing suns.

Her bearing was sharp and fierce.

But it carried, too, a peculiar, incongruous adorableness.

Nothing about her betrayed even the faintest hint that she was the same Jogo from Jujutsu Kaisen — the one who had originally looked like a craggy old crater-head.

"Prepare to die, Satoru Gojo——" Magical Girl Jogo raised her staff in one hand. The red heart-gemstone at its tip flickered with light. Her voice was ice-cold and confident, battle intent burning in her crimson eyes.

She landed, shattering the scorched earth beneath her feet, and was just about to launch her attack —

Then she noticed that Satoru Gojo had his back turned to her.

"...Hey!! Why do you have your back to me!!" Jogo erupted with instant fury. "Are you looking down on me!?"

"Ah, no," Satoru Gojo slowly turned around, one hand scratching at his white hair, deliberately coughing twice with some inscrutable meaning. "Um... well, it's just... a matter of not looking at what one shouldn't..."

You were changing clothes right out in the open, in the middle of everything — it was genuinely awkward...

"You ARE looking down on me!!" The white-haired girl shook with fury. "You were suppressing laughter right in front of me!! You bastard!!"

Of course Jogo couldn't understand human concepts like modesty or shame. She was a cursed spirit — she simply didn't possess that framework at all. All she knew was that the man in front of her had been flippant and dismissive from start to finish, never once looking at her seriously, never once fighting her with genuine effort.

"And you're wearing a blindfold anyway!!"

She decided to make this man regret it.

Jogo raised her staff. The crimson heart-gemstone at its tip began to radiate violently.

An enormous mass of energy gathered at the gemstone's tip — scorching beyond measure, hot enough to warp the very air around it. It was like a miniature sun.

The orb of light grew larger and larger, brighter and brighter. Heat radiated outward in all directions. The ground beneath her feet began to crack and melt.

The reflection of that small sun shimmered in Jogo's crimson eyes. Then she swept her staff downward —

"Blazing Oblivion ♡ Ultra-Scorching Radiant Cannon——!!"

At the name of the technique, the corner of Satoru Gojo's mouth twitched involuntarily.

Then — a beam of light blasted from the tip of the staff.

"Biiiiiu ————"

With a digitized sound effect ringing out, a pure-white beam of Cursed Energy over three meters in diameter — blazing, suffocatingly hot — shot toward Satoru Gojo.

Where the white light passed, air was instantly vaporized. The ground was plowed into a trench several meters deep. The trees on both sides were gasified before they could even catch fire — there wasn't even time for flames to form.

The temperature had exceeded the threshold for combustion entirely. It skipped the "catching fire" step, converting matter from solid state directly into nothingness.

The beam struck the position where Satoru Gojo stood.

BOOM——!!

Explosion.

The entire forest ignited in an instant. The heat wave caused the air to expand into a shockwave, pushing flames outward in every direction. In a single moment, fire consumed hundreds of meters of forest on all sides. The night sky was lit brighter than midday.

The attack ended.

Jogo withdrew her staff. The flames subsided.

The girl panted sharply, eyes locked on the center of the inferno. That had been the absolute limit of her output. Surely, this time, she had finally punched through that bizarre defense around Satoru Gojo...

The smoke cleared.

Satoru Gojo stood exactly where he had been — still with his back to her — his silhouette completely unharmed.

"How are you still facing away from me!!" Jogo gnashed her teeth, screaming in rage, nearly losing her mind.

Satoru Gojo turned back around, rubbing the lower half of his face, coughing twice: "What? No, I wasn't laughing..."

"Nobody asked whether you were laughing!! And you clearly were!!" Jogo swung her staff wildly, so furious her face had gone red. "Scorching Love ♡ Kaleidoscope Fire Meteor——!!"
