Cherreads

Chapter 2 - CHAPTER 2: THE CURSED CITYSCAPE

The silence that followed the Shadow Crawler's retreat was louder than any scream. Siddharth stood in the center of his ruined attic, the smell of burnt ozone and ozone-charred flesh heavy in the air. His breath came in ragged gasps, and the blue glow in his eyes—the 'Spectral Sight'—was beginning to pulse with a dull ache.

[Warning: Sanity at 48%. Hallucinations may occur.]

[System Suggestion: Distribute your Stat Points to stabilize your condition.]

Siddharth stared at the translucent blue window floating in the air. He had 4 points. He knew that in any game, a balanced build was safe, but this wasn't a game he played for fun. This was a nightmare he had to survive.

"If I can't outrun them, I need to outthink them," he whispered, his voice trembling. "And if I can't kill them, I need to be fast enough that they can't catch me."

[Stat Distribution Confirmed:]

Intelligence: 7 -> 9 (Enhances mana perception and mental resistance)

Agility: 4 -> 6 (Increases movement speed and reaction time)

As soon as he confirmed the choice, a jolt of ice-cold energy snapped through his spine. The throbbing ache in his head vanished, replaced by a crystalline clarity. His vision sharpened. He could see the dust motes dancing in the air, each one outlined in a faint, ghostly luminescence. His muscles felt lighter, coiled like springs ready to snap.

[Sanity Stabilized: 52%]

[New Passive Skill Unlocked: 'Sixth Sense' (Grade F)]

(Description: You can feel the gaze of entities watching you from the shadows.)

Siddharth looked out the shattered window again. The city of Kochi, once a bustling hub of lights and traffic, had been swallowed by a thick, obsidian mist. The towering 'Nightmare Pillars' he saw earlier were pulsing with a rhythmic, red light, like the heartbeat of a titan.

Suddenly, his 'Sixth Sense' flared. A cold prickle ran down the back of his neck.

He wasn't alone in the building anymore.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

Something heavy was climbing the stairs. It wasn't the rhythmic knocking of the 'Lamenting Mother'. This was the sound of dead weight being dragged across concrete.

Siddharth grabbed his backpack, shoving in a flashlight, a half-empty water bottle, and the [Key of the Forgotten Ward]. He didn't have a weapon, except for the kitchen knife that now looked like a toothpick against the horrors he had witnessed.

He moved to the door. Thanks to his increased Agility, his footsteps were nearly silent. He cracked the door open just an inch.

The hallway was filled with a thick, green fog. And there, standing by the stairs, was a creature that made the Shadow Crawler look like a pet. It was a mass of stitched-together limbs, wearing the tattered remains of a security guard's uniform. It had three heads, each one frozen in a different expression of agony.

[Entity Detected: The Mangled Sentinel (Level 8 - Elite)]

[Status: Guarding the Exit]

[Danger Level: Extreme. DO NOT ENGAGE.]

Siddharth's heart hammered. A Level 8 Elite? He was only Level 3. If he tried to fight that thing, he'd be dead in seconds.

"The light that burns from within..." the System's previous hint echoed in his mind.

He looked at the [Key of the Forgotten Ward] in his hand. It was vibrating. As an Intelligence-based user now, he could feel the flow of energy within the key. It wasn't just a key; it was a conduit.

Focus, he told himself. Think.

He remembered the old service elevator at the end of the hall. It had been broken for years, but with the System... maybe the rules had changed.

He crept out into the hallway. The Mangled Sentinel's middle head groaned, its clouded eyes scanning the fog. Siddharth froze, holding his breath. His 'Sixth Sense' warned him that the creature was sensitive to sound.

He reached the elevator. The metal gates were rusted shut. He pressed the button. To his shock, it lit up with a pale blue light.

[Mechanical Interface Detected.]

[Would you like to use 'Key of the Forgotten Ward' to bypass the lock?]

"Yes," Siddharth hissed.

The key dissolved into light, flowing into the elevator's keyhole. With a screech of metal that sounded like a dying bird, the doors began to slide open.

The Mangled Sentinel roared. All three heads turned toward him. It charged, its many limbs scuttling across the walls and floor like a giant, fleshy spider.

"Come on... faster!" Siddharth growled.

The doors opened just enough. He dove inside. The Sentinel's clawed hand slammed into the metal door, missing his heel by a fraction of an inch. Siddharth slammed his fist against the 'G' button.

The elevator didn't go down. It plummeted.

[Alert: You are entering a 'Hidden Zone' - The Subterranean Labyrinth of Kochi.]

The floor of the elevator gave way, and Siddharth fell into a void of swirling shadows.

He woke up on a cold, damp floor. The air was thick with the smell of salt and old blood. He turned on his flashlight.

He was in what looked like an underground tunnel, but the walls weren't made of concrete. They were made of bone-white stone, engraved with shifting runes that hurt his eyes to look at.

[Current Location: The Bone Tunnels (Level Requirement: 10)]

[Warning: You are severely under-leveled for this area!]

"Great," Siddharth groaned, pushing himself up. His arm where the Shadow Crawler had scratched him was throbbing, the veins around the wound turning a faint shade of violet.

[Status: Necrotic Infection spreading. Time until 'Ghoul Transformation': 02:59:59]

He had three hours to find a cure, or he would become one of the monsters he was trying to escape.

Suddenly, his flashlight caught something reflecting in the distance. A small, golden chest sitting on a pedestal of skulls.

[Objective Found: The First Loot.]

[Warning: The chest is guarded by 'The Whispering Shadows'.]

Siddharth didn't see any monsters. But he heard them. Tiny, high-pitched voices whispering his name, telling him to give up, telling him that his mother was waiting for him in the dark.

[Sanity: 45%... 44%... 43%...]

This was the Thriller part of the game. It wasn't just about physical strength; it was a battle of the mind. Siddharth closed his eyes. He focused on his Intelligence stat, visualizing a wall of white light around his brain.

"I am not a lamb," he whispered, stepping forward into the darkness. "I am the one who survives."

As he walked, the whispers turned into screams. The shadows around him began to take shape—faces of people he had lost, colleagues who had mocked him, creditors who had hounded him. They reached out with smoky hands, trying to pull him down.

He didn't look back. He kept his eyes on the golden glow of the chest.

When he finally reached the pedestal, his Sanity was at a critical 32%. He grabbed the chest and threw it open.

Inside was a single vial of glowing silver liquid and a rusted iron ring.

[Item Received: Essence of Purity (Cures all infections)]

[Item Received: Ring of the Fallen Scout (Agility +3, Stealth +5)]

Siddharth didn't hesitate. He downed the silver liquid. A wave of warmth surged through him, the violet veins on his arm receding instantly.

[Infection Cured!]

[Level Up! Current Level: 4]

But his celebration was short-lived. The Bone Tunnels began to shake. From the darkness behind him, a massive shadow emerged. It was a giant serpent made entirely of human ribcages, its eyes two burning pits of green fire.

[Boss Encounter: The Ribcage Hydra (Level 15)]

Siddharth looked at his new ring, then at the massive beast. "Level 15? You've got to be kidding me."

He didn't fight. He ran. With his new Agility boost from the ring, he was a blur of motion, dodging the Hydra's bone-shattering strikes.

He saw a crack in the wall ahead—a way out. But as he reached it, a System message appeared that chilled him to the bone.

[Global Announcement:]

[The First Boss has been awakened. The 'Tutorial Phase' of the City is officially over. Total survivors remaining: 1,240.]

Siddharth burst through the crack and found himself... in the middle of the Kochi Metro tracks. But the trains weren't running on electricity anymore. They were covered in pulsing veins, breathing like living animals.

And standing on top of the nearest train was a woman in a white dress, her face hidden by long, black hair. She was holding a red umbrella, even though they were underground.

She pointed a pale finger at him.

"You're late, Siddharth," she said, her voice echoing through the tunnel. "The King is waiting for his Sovereign."

[To be continued...]

Author's Thoughts:

Holy... Level 15 Boss already?! Siddharth is really jumping from the frying pan into the fire!

I wanted to show that in this world, Intelligence and Agility can be just as deadly as raw Strength. That [Ring of the Fallen Scout] is going to be a game-changer for his survival.

But who is the woman with the red umbrella? Is she a player? An NPC? Or something far worse? And what does she mean by "The King"?

Quick Poll for the next chapter:

Siddharth is now trapped in the Metro tunnels with a Level 15 Hydra behind him and a mysterious woman in front. What should his next move be?

Trust the Woman: She seems to know him... maybe she's an ally?

Use the 'Key' again: Look for another hidden mechanical bypass in the Metro station.

Fight!: Try to use the environment (the living trains) to trap the Hydra.
