Pokeni released the PV for their new game.
As a loyal fan of Pokémon, Uesugi Noboru quickly turned on the TV as soon as he got home, eager to see what this year's Pokeni 3D Pokémon would look like.
His mother glanced at him, thinking, "This child really is something."
However, considering that he had been quite diligent with his homework recently, she turned a blind eye.
Around 7 PM, after the cartoon on TV finished, the PV for Pokeni's "Pokémon 3D" appeared.
"This is a brand new game."
On the screen, the first thing to appear was Pikachu, the most familiar and well-known Pokémon.
Its round head, a pair of bright, sparkling round eyes, and its iconic lightning bolt tail immediately made Uesugi Noboru's spirits soar.
"Ahhh! It's Pikachu! Pika Pika!"
Uesugi Noboru shouted excitedly.
His voice was a bit too loud, directly startling his mother, who was still cooking in the kitchen.
His mother stood with her hands on her hips, walked out, and glared at him, "Keep your voice down, you're making my ears deaf. If you disturb the neighbors, you'll have to apologize yourself."
"Okay, Mom."
Uesugi Noboru responded with a smile, his eyes fixed on the TV, bouncing up and down on the sofa.
Like a jumping bean.
His mother shook her head, feeling a little helpless, not knowing if the "okay" this child said meant he would lower his voice or apologize later.
Never mind, never mind.
Seeing how excited he was, it wasn't a good time to interrupt him.
If he really went too far, she would just give him a good beating after he finished watching.
His mother shook her head and turned to go back into the kitchen.
The Pikachu 3D model used in the PV was a high-poly model specially made by Pokeni, meaning it had a relatively high polygon count and was specifically used for shooting animated CG. Therefore, its fidelity was already quite good.
However, this model definitely couldn't be run in the game itself.
Although there was still a gap compared to the cartoon, Uesugi Noboru could recognize Pikachu at a glance.
In fact, in his mind, the two images had already been seamlessly connected.
Children's acceptance is just that high; they can even fill in many things you can't complete with their own imagination.
That's why adults need logic, but children don't.
Many illogical fairy tales are more popular with children.
After Pikachu appeared, accompanied by a gorgeous UI, Pikachu's 3D character model was in the center of the screen, but a 2D comparison image was provided in the UI below.
Next were Squirtle, Charmander, and Bulbasaur.
The classic Pokémon trio.
No, it should be the classic quartet.
However, generally, Pikachu, as the protagonist of the anime, won't be easily obtained in the game; you need to catch it yourself to feel a sense of accomplishment.
Seeing his favorite characters, Uesugi Noboru shouted and jumped, overjoyed.
"A 3D representation you've never seen before.
In pokémon 3d world, you will experience unprecedented fun."
After a few characters appeared, a game demonstration followed.
This time, Pokeni was very pragmatic, hardly using any other processing methods, unlike patema inverted before, which had to create a special plot as a gimmick.
But Pokémon didn't need that.
Throughout, it almost entirely showcased the actual gameplay within the game.
You could see four Pokémon teaming up to clear levels, Pikachu jumping, and even releasing electric shocks when encountering enemies.
The entire screen was filled with a lively and joyful atmosphere.
"Pokeni's brand new production, a different 3D experience, giving you a more realistic and three-dimensional visual impact."
"At the same time, there's also the very familiar Pokémon evolution setting."
On the screen, Pikachu ate some special item, and then after the energy bar on the left filled up, it successfully evolved into Raichu.
Its entire size almost doubled, and the range of lightning it released also became enormous.
As Raichu used Thunder, the surrounding monsters were all defeated by the electric shock, then fell to the ground and scattered into a shower of stars.
The game adopted a more cheerful and child-friendly visual treatment, so the colors were rich, and many settings like [death] and [being burned to ashes] were discarded.
Of course, there was also a very important reason—
Everything was to save costs.
It wasn't a money issue; it was a game performance issue.
Making death material changes wasn't impossible, but it was a bit performance-heavy, so the Pokémon project team saved wherever they could.
"After successfully clearing a level, there's a certain probability of obtaining new Pokémon."
"These Pokémon can join you as new companions."
The settings of [evolution] and [becoming companions] were two features that Lisa Asano, the Producer of Pokémon, decided to definitely retain after communicating with Aoki Haruhi.
But it was precisely because of these features that this Pokémon 3D was so unique.
In fact, becoming companions was truly maximizing the utilization of game resources.
After all, the model, animations, and corresponding special effects for the monsters themselves were already made, so it might as well be opened up for players to use.
Seeing this, Uesugi Noboru became even more excited.
How to put it?
Although the PV couldn't completely replace the actual game experience, the 3D conversion combined with the retention of these two core settings immediately made Uesugi Noboru accept and like this game.
In the minds of children, such a 3D Pokémon, though it looked different, was also familiar and greatly piqued their interest in the game.
"In pokémon 3d world, nearly 50 different new Pokémon have been added."
"And there are brand new maps waiting for you to explore."
On the TV, the PV showed a bunch of new Pokémon silhouettes.
Although you didn't know what they all were yet, these silhouettes greatly maintained the players' suspense about the game.
Making Uesugi Noboru in front of the screen itch with anticipation.
"Wow!"
Hearing about new Pokémon joining and brand new maps to explore, Uesugi Noboru was already beyond excited.
He bounced high on the sofa.
Wishing he could play this game right now.
"pokémon 3d world supports 4 players simultaneously, teaming up to clear levels together, strategizing to achieve victory together, and enjoying the fun of the game together."
"What are you waiting for? Come and play."
"pokémon 3d world."
"Available at major game stores nationwide on July 14th."
"That's great! I have to buy it, I have to buy it!" Uesugi Noboru happily jumped off the sofa and rushed straight to the kitchen.
"Mom, do you need any help? I'll help you with something, will you buy me the latest Pokémon game, please?"
His mother's face was covered in black lines, wishing she could just press this kid to the ground and give him a good beating.
"No."
His mother asked sternly, "Where's your allowance?"
"Uh… that… my allowance isn't enough."
"Then there's nothing I can do."
"Ah~ Don't be like that, Mom, as long as you buy it for me, I'll do anything!"
...
Elementary school students were a very important part of the Pokémon demographic, but at this time, far more than just elementary school students were watching the Pokémon PV in front of their TVs.
Many company executives who wanted to venture into 3D game but were hesitant and lacked good ideas were all glued to their TVs, wanting to see what kind of game Pokeni, who never played by the rules, would create.
"Very good, Pokeni won again this time."
After watching, Miyamoto Shigeru of Nintendo closed his eyes, feeling a little distressed.
The entire PV, though only 2 minutes long, contained a huge amount of information.
First, in terms of 3D effects, Pokeni was quite clever.
Before this, many game companies tried to make 3D game in the direction of RPGs or humanoid characters, the most typical being Sega's vr fighter.
After that, it died a terrible death.
Because while PS could support 3D functions, it couldn't support models with too many polygons. When the polygon count couldn't go up, the more complex characters became, the less effective they were, and they would instead be criticized by players.
One very clever point about Pokeni was that they adopted Pokémon as their theme. Pokémon are basically characters with relatively low complexity.
Characters with high complexity were either discarded by Pokeni, because this was [brand new maps] and [brand new Pokémon].
Or they were simplified.
But the prototypes themselves were relatively simple, so after being simplified into 3D, there wasn't much sense of incongruity.
Then there was the gameplay that could be glimpsed from the PV.
When Miyamoto Shigeru first saw it, he was completely stunned.
Because the visual impact of this game was too strong; it was exactly what he envisioned mario would look like after being converted to 3D.
At that moment, Miyamoto Shigeru's mind buzzed.
As if he had been hit hard on the back of the head with a sledgehammer.
He had an epiphany.
Previously, the company's staff had imagined and experimented countless times, but they always focused on zelda, never thinking of making super mario 3D.
This was mainly due to inertia.
After all, mario is a side-scrolling game, and it's hard to imagine what it would look like as a 3D side-scroller.
And now—
The Pokémon PV gave him the answer.
When Miyamoto Shigeru saw the few in-level shots in the screen, he suddenly realized, "Oh, so it can be done this way?"
"Damn it."
The worst part was that these ideas didn't come from Nintendo, but from Pokeni.
If Pokémon 3D sold well, he estimated he would be scolded by President Yamauchi again.
Even more remarkably, Pokeni not only incorporated multiplayer level-clearing elements but also added the unique features of Pokémon's own evolution and collection.
Even a short two-minute PV could make Miyamoto Shigeru imagine how fun and rich this game would be; it was truly impressive.
"After getting used to those oddly shaped 3D humans, I actually think Pokémon 3D is pretty good; they all look quite charming."
It's over, it's over.
Pokeni's Pokémon 3D might sell big again!
