Chapter 9 - Chapter 9:The Public Test

đź“– The CEO Contract Bride

The morning began earlier than usual.

Not by choice—but by obligation.

---

A maid knocked gently on Tessa's door.

"Ma'am, preparations for today's schedule have begun."

Tessa opened her eyes slowly, adjusting to the light filtering through the curtains.

"Today's schedule?" she repeated softly.

"Yes, ma'am. The CEO requested an early start."

---

Tessa sat up.

"Alright. I'll get ready."

---

Within minutes, the routine resumed.

But today felt different.

Not because of the environment.

But because of what awaited her.

---

After dressing in a formal, elegant outfit, Tessa stepped out of her room.

She found the CEO already waiting in the hallway.

He was dressed in a tailored suit, sharp and precise as always.

---

"You're ready," he said.

Tessa nodded.

"Yes."

---

He turned slightly.

"We're leaving."

---

They walked together toward the car without additional conversation.

But this time, the silence felt… purposeful.

---

Inside the vehicle, the CEO finally spoke.

"Today's event involves external partners."

Tessa looked at him.

"Similar to the previous meetings?"

"More public."

---

She frowned slightly.

"Public?"

"Yes."

---

Tessa leaned back.

"So… more attention."

"Yes."

---

She exhaled softly.

"Great."

---

The CEO glanced at her briefly.

"You will be observed."

---

Tessa nodded.

"I figured."

---

He continued,

"Your behavior will reflect on the company."

---

Tessa looked out the window.

"No pressure."

---

"There is no room for error," he added.

---

She turned her head slightly.

"Understood."

---

The car arrived at a large event venue.

Unlike the previous meetings, this place was filled with activity.

Reporters.

Staff.

Guests.

Security personnel.

---

Cameras were already positioned near the entrance.

Waiting.

---

Tessa stepped out of the car first this time, followed by the CEO.

Immediately, flashes of cameras began.

---

"Mr. Victor! Over here!"

"Sir, a quick comment!"

"Who is the lady with you?"

---

Tessa instinctively adjusted her posture.

Calm.

Composed.

Neutral expression.

---

The CEO placed a hand lightly at her back—not intimate, but guiding.

"Stay close," he said quietly.

---

Tessa nodded slightly.

---

They walked forward together.

Each step deliberate.

Each movement controlled.

---

Inside the venue, the atmosphere was formal but busy.

Executives mingled.

Conversations overlapped.

Attention subtly shifted toward the CEO's arrival.

---

And toward Tessa.

---

Whispers began to spread.

"Is that her?"

"She looks different from what I expected…"

"They said it's a contract marriage…"

---

Tessa heard fragments of the conversations, but she maintained her composure.

She had learned quickly.

Not everything required a reaction.

---

They were guided to a reserved seating area near the front.

Soon, the event officially began.

---

Speeches were delivered.

Introductions were made.

Business discussions followed.

---

Throughout it all, Tessa remained by the CEO's side.

Observing.

Listening.

Maintaining presence.

---

At one point, an organizer approached.

"Mr. Victor, we would like you and your spouse to join a brief presentation segment."

---

The CEO nodded.

"Proceed."

---

Tessa looked at him briefly.

"Presentation?"

"Yes."

---

She stood up with him.

Together, they were escorted to the stage.

---

The lights shifted slightly as they stepped into view.

Cameras focused again.

This time more intensely.

---

A host addressed the audience.

"Today, we are honored to welcome Mr. Victor and his spouse."

---

Applause followed.

---

Tessa stood calmly beside the CEO.

Her posture aligned.

Her expression composed.

---

The host continued,

"May we ask you both a question?"

---

The CEO responded first.

"Yes."

---

The host smiled.

"How does your partnership influence your professional life?"

---

Tessa felt the weight of the question immediately.

This was not random.

This was intentional.

---

All eyes were on them.

Waiting.

Observing.

Evaluating.

---

The CEO spoke first.

"It provides stability."

---

A simple answer.

Controlled.

Expected.

---

The host then turned slightly toward Tessa.

"And from your perspective?"

---

Tessa paused briefly.

This was her moment.

---

She stepped forward slightly, maintaining composure.

"Trust and alignment are important in any partnership."

---

A subtle murmur spread through the audience.

---

She continued,

"Even in structured arrangements, understanding each other's roles helps maintain balance."

---

The host nodded.

"A thoughtful response."

---

Applause followed again.

---

Tessa returned to her position beside the CEO.

But this time, something had shifted slightly.

---

Not in the environment.

But in perception.

---

After the presentation, they stepped off the stage and returned to their seats.

The event continued as planned.

---

However, during a brief break, another interaction occurred.

A group of attendees approached them.

Among them was a man who seemed particularly interested in Tessa.

---

"Mrs. Victor," he said with a polite smile.

"You handle public settings quite well."

---

Tessa responded calmly.

"Thank you."

---

He continued,

"Not many people adjust so quickly to this kind of environment."

---

Before Tessa could respond further, the CEO spoke.

"She is capable."

---

The tone was neutral.

But firm.

---

The man nodded.

"Of course."

---

He stepped back, and the group moved away.

---

Tessa glanced at the CEO briefly.

"You didn't need to respond like that."

---

He replied,

"It was necessary."

---

She raised a slight brow.

"For what?"

---

"To avoid misinterpretation."

---

Tessa exhaled softly.

"Everything is always about interpretation with you."

---

"Yes."

---

She shook her head slightly but didn't argue further.

---

As the event continued, Tessa began to notice something else.

The way people looked at her had changed.

Not just curiosity.

But recognition.

---

She was no longer just "the spouse."

She was becoming part of the structure people acknowledged.

---

Not fully understood.

But no longer ignored.

---

Later, as they prepared to leave the venue, Clara appeared again.

---

She approached them casually, as though she had been there all along.

"Busy day," she said.

---

The CEO responded,

"Yes."

---

Clara's eyes shifted to Tessa.

"You handled yourself well."

---

Tessa nodded.

"Thank you."

---

Clara smiled slightly.

"You're adapting faster than expected."

---

Tessa returned the look.

"I'm learning."

---

Clara's expression carried something subtle.

Not competitive.

Not hostile.

But observant.

---

Then she said,

"This environment tends to reveal more than people expect."

---

Tessa responded calmly,

"Then I'll continue paying attention."

---

Clara gave a small nod.

"Good."

---

She turned and left without further comment.

---

As Tessa and the CEO walked back to the car, Tessa spoke quietly.

"She's always present at the right moments."

---

The CEO replied,

"She operates within overlapping circles."

---

Tessa looked at him.

"And those circles include you."

---

"Yes."

---

She nodded slowly.

"Then she's not just an acquaintance."

---

The CEO didn't deny it.

---

Tessa turned her gaze forward.

"Noted."

---

They entered the car and drove away from the venue.

---

But this time, the silence between them was different again.

Not tense.

Not distant.

But layered with new understanding.

---

Tessa had been tested today.

Not directly.

But publicly.

---

And she had passed.

Not perfectly.

But sufficiently.

---

Still, one thought lingered in her mind as the car moved forward.

---

If this is just the beginning… then what comes next?
