Chapter 26 - Chapter 50: After the End

The moment Zein Shoin and Ace Craige stepped toward the unstable core together, the entire underground chamber erupted into chaos around them, because the fractures spreading across the glowing structure had finally reached their limit, and violent waves of red energy exploded through the collapsing remains of Hell University while alarms screamed endlessly through the darkness and the ground beneath them cracked apart faster than ever before.

WARNING: CORE FAILURE IN 30 SECONDS.

The mechanical voice echoed one last time.

Zein's breathing slowed unevenly as the energy wrapped violently around her again.

Ace grabbed her hand immediately.

"…don't let go," he said sharply.

Zein looked at him through the storm of unstable light surrounding them.

"…you really think I would?" she asked softly.

Another explosion ripped through the chamber.

The floor beneath them collapsed further.

The unstable core pulsed wildly—

Almost out of control.

Ace tightened his grip on her hand.

"…tell me exactly what happens now," he said.

Zein forced herself to focus despite the overwhelming pressure around them.

"…we synchronize with the core at the same time," she explained quickly.

"If our energy stabilizes together, the overload redirects into containment."

Ace frowned slightly.

"And if it doesn't?"

Zein hesitated.

"…then everything explodes."

Ace stared at her flatly.

"…great plan."

Despite the situation—

She laughed weakly.

The sound surprised both of them.

Another violent shockwave exploded outward.

The chamber groaned loudly around them.

WARNING: CORE FAILURE IN 20 SECONDS.

The countdown continued.

Zein looked toward the unstable core again.

"…Ace," she whispered.

"What?"

"…thank you."

Ace's expression shifted slightly.

"For what?"

"For staying."

The answer came quietly—

But honestly.

Ace looked at her for several seconds before speaking again.

"…you were never getting rid of me."

Something in her chest tightened painfully at those words.

The unstable core surged violently again.

Red light exploded through the chamber.

Cracks spread rapidly across the ceiling above them.

The entire underground level began collapsing completely.

"…now, Zein!" Ace shouted.

Both of them reached toward the unstable core at the same time.

The reaction was instant.

Energy exploded outward violently—

Bright enough to swallow the entire chamber in red light.

Pain ripped through Zein immediately.

She gasped sharply.

Ace grabbed her arm tighter.

"Stay with me!"

The core pulsed harder.

The pressure became unbearable.

Fragments of memory slammed back into Zein's mind—

The experiments.

The fear.

The destruction.

The moment she sealed the power years ago.

And then—

Something else.

Ace.

Standing beside her now.

Refusing to leave.

Refusing to let her disappear alone.

The unstable energy suddenly shifted.

Not violently.

Steadily.

The core began stabilizing.

Ace looked toward it immediately.

"…it's working," he said.

Zein's breathing shook unevenly.

"…almost," she whispered.

Another violent tremor shook the collapsing chamber.

Large sections of the ceiling crashed down around them.

Ace immediately pulled Zein closer to shield her from falling debris.

"…seriously?" he muttered.

Zein blinked weakly.

"…you're still protecting me?"

Ace looked at her like the answer was obvious.

"…obviously."

The unstable core pulsed one final time.

Then—

Silence.

Complete silence.

The violent red light disappeared instantly.

The pressure vanished.

The energy stabilized completely.

And far above them—

The destruction stopped.

For several seconds neither of them moved.

Neither of them spoke.

Then suddenly—

The remaining underground structure gave way completely.

"…RUN," Ace shouted instantly.

He grabbed Zein's hand and pulled her forward through the collapsing tunnel as explosions ripped through the underground chamber behind them, debris crashing around them while the final remains of Hell University collapsed into itself, and the two of them barely escaped the underground level seconds before the entire structure finally gave out completely behind them.

The ground shook violently one last time.

Then—

Nothing.

Silence.

Smoke filled the cold night air around the destroyed remains of Hell University.

What had once been massive towers and endless corridors now existed only as ruins beneath the dark sky.

Students stood outside at a distance—

Injured.

Exhausted.

But alive.

Emergency lights flickered across the destroyed campus.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody fully understood what had happened.

And in the middle of the destruction—

Ace still hadn't let go of Zein's hand.

Zein looked around slowly at the ruins.

"…it's over," she whispered.

Ace looked at the destroyed university silently for a moment.

"…yeah," he replied quietly.

For the first time in what felt like forever—

There were no alarms.

No chaos.

No collapsing walls.

Only silence.

Cold wind moved softly through the destroyed campus.

Zein suddenly swayed slightly from exhaustion.

Ace caught her immediately.

"…easy," he said quietly.

"I'm okay," she replied automatically.

Ace closed his eyes briefly.

"…I'm banning that sentence from your vocabulary."

Despite everything—

She laughed again.

A real laugh this time.

Ace stared at her quietly for a second.

Then finally—

"…you scared me," he admitted softly.

Zein froze slightly.

Ace looked away briefly before continuing.

"…when you said you might not come back…" he said quietly,

"…I hated it."

The honesty in his voice hit harder than anything else had tonight.

Zein looked at him silently.

"…Ace…"

He exhaled slowly.

"…I don't know when it happened," he admitted,

"…but somewhere between stopping fights, saving you every five seconds, and arguing constantly…"

He paused briefly.

"…you became the most important person in my life."

Silence.

Heavy.

Real.

Zein felt her chest tighten painfully.

"…you're terrible at emotional speeches," she whispered softly.

Ace looked mildly offended.

"I'm aware."

A small smile appeared on Zein's face again.

Then slowly—

Very softly—

She stepped closer.

"…I love you," she whispered.

Ace looked at her silently for several seconds.

No sarcasm.

No teasing.

No distance.

Just honesty.

Then finally—

"…I love you too," he said quietly.

And for the first time—

Neither of them looked away.

Ace slowly lifted his hand against her face gently.

Then finally—

After everything—

After the chaos, destruction, fear, fighting, and survival—

He kissed her.

Soft.

Real.

Not rushed.

Not desperate.

Just certain.

And when they finally pulled apart—

The ruins of Hell University no longer felt like an ending.

Because standing there together—

Alive—

They had finally found something beyond the destruction.

Peace.

And for the first time—

Neither of them had to fight anymore.

The cold night air moved quietly through the destroyed remains of Hell University while emergency lights flickered across the broken campus, painting the ruins in red and white flashes that reflected across shattered concrete, fallen steel beams, and smoke still rising from what had once been one of the most feared universities in the country, but despite the destruction surrounding them, despite the exhaustion pulling at every part of their bodies, neither Ace Craige nor Zein Shoin moved away from each other after the kiss.

For a long moment—

They just stood there.

Breathing.

Alive.

Ace's forehead rested lightly against hers as the noise of distant sirens echoed faintly across the ruined campus.

Zein's heartbeat still hadn't slowed properly.

Not because of the destruction.

Because of him.

"…so," Ace said quietly after a moment,

"…that happened."

Zein blinked once before a small smile appeared again.

"…you sound surprised."

Ace looked at her flatly.

"I just watched an entire university collapse," he replied.

"My ability to process emotions is currently unavailable."

Despite everything—

She laughed softly again.

Ace stared at her for a second longer than necessary.

"…you're doing that more now."

"Doing what?"

"Laughing."

Zein looked away briefly.

"…maybe because I survived."

Ace's expression softened slightly.

"…good," he said quietly.

The honesty in the single word hit her harder than she expected.

Nearby, injured students slowly gathered together outside the ruins while emergency teams moved through the destroyed campus helping survivors, and although panic still lingered in the air, the overwhelming fear from before had finally started fading into something quieter—

Relief.

One of the students suddenly noticed them standing near the destroyed entrance.

"…President Craige!" he shouted weakly.

Several others looked over immediately.

Their expressions changed instantly.

Relief.

Shock.

Disbelief.

Because somehow—

Despite everything—

The two people standing closest to the destruction were still alive.

Ace straightened slightly as a group of exhausted students approached them carefully.

"Sir… what happened?" one of them asked quietly.

Ace glanced briefly toward the destroyed underground structure before answering.

"…the threat's gone," he said simply.

Another student looked around nervously.

"…is it over?"

Ace looked toward Zein for a second before replying.

"…yes."

Zein noticed the way his voice changed slightly when he answered.

Steady.

Certain.

Like he wanted everyone to believe it completely.

And strangely—

They did.

A girl stepped forward carefully, her hands shaking slightly.

"…you saved us," she whispered.

Zein froze slightly at the words.

Ace looked at her briefly.

Then back toward the students.

"…go get treated," he said calmly.

"That's an order."

The students immediately obeyed.

Even exhausted—

Even terrified—

They still listened to him.

When the area quieted again, Zein slowly sat down on a broken section of concrete nearby, finally allowing exhaustion to hit her fully now that the danger had ended.

Ace noticed instantly.

"…hey."

"I'm fine," she replied automatically.

Ace stared at her silently.

Zein blinked once.

"…right. Banned sentence."

"Correct."

A small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth briefly before disappearing again.

Zein leaned back slightly, looking up at the dark sky above the destroyed university.

"…it's strange," she whispered.

Ace sat beside her quietly.

"What is?"

"…for so long I thought everything connected to this place was pain," she admitted softly.

"The experiments… the memories… the power…"

She paused briefly.

"…I hated all of it."

Ace stayed silent, listening carefully.

Zein looked down at her hands.

"…but if none of that happened…" she continued quietly,

"…I never would've met you."

Ace looked at her immediately.

For once—

He didn't have a sarcastic answer ready.

The silence between them felt softer now.

Lighter.

Not painful anymore.

After a while, Ace finally spoke quietly.

"…you know what your biggest problem is?"

Zein looked at him suspiciously.

"…that sounds insulting already."

"It probably is."

"…Ace."

"You think you have to carry everything alone," he continued calmly.

"You decide everyone else matters more than you do."

Zein looked away slightly.

"…someone had to stop it."

"And someone had to stop YOU," he replied immediately.

The directness in his voice made her chest tighten again.

Ace leaned back slightly beside her.

"…you don't always have to be the one sacrificing yourself."

Zein was quiet for a long moment before answering.

"…I didn't know anyone would stay."

Ace looked at her immediately.

The answer hit him harder than expected.

"…that's stupid," he said quietly.

Zein frowned slightly.

"…wow. Very emotional."

Ace ignored that completely.

"…of course I stayed," he continued.

"There was no version of this ending where I left you alone."

Silence.

Real silence this time.

Not awkward.

Not painful.

Just honest.

Zein slowly looked toward him again.

"…you really mean that."

Ace raised an eyebrow slightly.

"…have I ever looked this exhausted for someone I didn't care about?"

She laughed softly again.

Ace shook his head faintly.

"…there it is again."

"What?"

"That laugh."

"…you seriously keep noticing that?"

"Yes."

"…creepy."

"I'm aware."

The quiet conversation faded gently into comfortable silence as the cold wind moved through the destroyed campus around them, carrying away the smoke and dust little by little while emergency lights flickered in the distance, and for the first time since arriving at Hell University—

There was no tension between them anymore.

No walls.

No pretending.

Only two exhausted people sitting together beneath the ruins of the place that had almost destroyed them both.

Ace suddenly looked toward her again.

"…Zein."

She glanced at him.

"What?"

His expression softened slightly.

"…stay."

The single word caught her completely off guard.

"…what?"

Ace looked away briefly before speaking again.

"…after this," he said quietly,

"…don't disappear."

Zein stared at him silently for several seconds.

Then slowly—

Very softly—

She moved closer until her shoulder rested lightly against his.

"…okay," she whispered.

Ace relaxed beside her almost immediately.

And somewhere beyond the destroyed ruins of Hell University—

Morning slowly began to rise.
