Chapter 9 - Ex

ELENA

As we entered the room, all the attention turned to us; cameras came out, and people started taking pics. I sighed, but regained my composure, "This is going to be a lot to handle," I thought to myself.

ADRIAN

Conversations began, people started talking, tilting their heads towards us.

Adrian was used to this. But this time it wasn't about him. It was her.

The way people looked at her.

Curious. Assessing.

Trying to figure her out.

Trying to place her.

Beside him.

His grip on her hand didn't tighten—but it didn't loosen either.

"Relax," Elena murmured, just enough for him to hear.

His gaze flicked to her.

"I am relaxed."

Her lips almost curved.

Almost.

"Then stop looking like you're about to fire someone."

He exhaled lightly through his nose. "That's how I normally look," he chuckled.

Not quite a laugh.

But close.

Interesting.

They moved through the room slowly, people approaching one after another.

Polite greetings.

Measured conversations.

Nothing unexpected.

"This is unexpected," someone said carefully, glancing between them.

Adrian didn't hesitate.

"It shouldn't be."

A pause.

Then, calmly—

"My wife."

There it was again.

The word.

Simple.

Final.

He didn't look at Elena when he said it this time.

But he was aware of her.

Of how she stood.

Of how she didn't flinch.

Didn't correct him.

Didn't step away.

She played her role well.

No—

She didn't play it.

She accepted it.

And that made it far more convincing.

Time passed.

Not long.

But enough.

Enough for the room to settle.

Enough for the whispers to spread.

Enough for everything to feel… normal.

And then—

It shifted.

Adrian noticed it instantly.

A small break in the rhythm of the room.

A pause in conversation somewhere behind them.

Subtle.

But there.

He turned slightly.

Not fully.

Just enough.

And saw him.

Daniel.

Standing near the entrance, completely still.

His gaze locked on them.

No—

On her.

Shock was obvious.

Disbelief, even more so.

Good.

Adrian didn't react outwardly.

Didn't tense.

Didn't move.

But his attention sharpened.

Beside him, Elena hadn't noticed yet.

Or maybe she had—

And was choosing not to react.

Either way, he didn't say anything.

Not yet.

He wanted to see.

Daniel approached them with a confused expression.

It was then that Elena noticed Daniel.

Her eyes flicked toward him for a second.

Then followed his line of sight.

And that's when she saw him.

There was no visible reaction.

No sharp breath.

No sudden movement.

Just a very slight stillness.

Then—

Gone.

Replaced with composure.

Adrian watched that closely.

Carefully.

That control—

That was new.

Or maybe it had always been there.

Either way, he approved.

Daniel stopped a few steps away.

Close enough now.

Too close.

"Elena."

Her name sounded different coming from him.

Like he still had a right to it.

Adrian didn't like that.

He didn't show it.

But he noticed.

Elena turned fully this time.

Calm.

Collected.

"Daniel."

No emotion.

No softness.

Just acknowledgment.

His gaze flicked between them.

Then dropped—

To their hands.

Still joined.

Something dark passed through his expression.

"What is this? And what are you doing here?" he asked.

Adrian didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

This wasn't his moment.

Not yet.

Elena tilted her head slightly.

"What does it look like?"

Same tone.

Cool.

Controlled.

Daniel let out a short breath.

Disbelief, frustration—both.

"You disappear, and then I see you here like this?" he said. "With him?"

There it was.

Jealousy.

Possession.

Too late for both.

Elena didn't step back.

Didn't let go of Adrian's hand either.

"I didn't disappear," she said calmly. "I left."

A pause.

"You just didn't expect me to."

That hit.

Adrian saw it.

The way Daniel's jaw tightened.

The way his posture shifted.

Losing ground.

Good.

Daniel stepped closer.

Too close.

Adrian's focus sharpened instantly.

Not moving yet.

Just watching.

"You're making a mistake," Daniel said, lower now.

More personal.

More desperate.

Elena's expression didn't change.

"I already made one," she replied.

A beat.

"I fixed it."

Silence.

Tight.

Heavy.

Adrian felt it—

That moment where things could shift.

Escalate.

Daniel's hand moved slightly—

Not touching her.

But close enough to suggest it.

That was enough.

Adrian stepped forward.

Just one step.

Closing the gap completely.

Not aggressive.

But final.

"Careful," he said quietly.

Daniel looked at him then.

Really looked.

And whatever he saw—

It made him stop.

"She's not someone you approach like that," Adrian added.

His tone didn't rise.

Didn't need to.

Daniel held his gaze for a second longer.

Then looked back at Elena.

Like he was trying to find something.

Anything.

But there was nothing left there for him.

Adrian could see that too.

And so could he.

Elena let out a slow breath.

Then—

She stepped slightly closer to Adrian.

Not hiding.

Not retreating.

Just… choosing her position.

"That will be all," she said.

Simple.

Clear.

Final.

Daniel didn't argue.

Didn't push.

Because for the first time—

He had nothing to hold on to.

After a second, he stepped back.

Then turned.

And walked away.

The silence lingered for a moment after he left.

Not awkward.

Just… settling.

Adrian glanced down briefly.

At their hands.

Still together.

Then back at her.

"You handled that well," he said.

It wasn't praise.

Just a fact.

Elena exhaled quietly.

"I'm getting used to it."

A pause.

Then she looked at him.

"And you?"

His gaze held hers.

Steady.

Unreadable.

"I already am."
