Chapter 7 - His

"Tonight," he said, "you stand beside me as my wife."

The words settled heavily in the space between them.

Elena didn't respond immediately.

Her fingers stilled at her side, her gaze fixed on him—sharp, searching.

"And if I don't?" she asked finally.

Adrian didn't hesitate.

"You will."

Not forceful.

Not raised.

Just… certain.

That calm certainty irritated her more than anything else.

"You seem very sure of yourself," she said.

"I am."

A pause.

Then—

"Because you didn't walk away."

That—

That hit.

Her jaw tightened slightly.

He was right.

Again.

She looked away first this time, exhaling slowly as she reached for the back of a chair.

"Fine," she said. "I'll go."

A beat.

"But don't expect me to play along."

Silence.

Then—

"I expect you to do exactly what you agreed to," he replied.

Her eyes snapped back to his.

"This is a public appearance," he continued. "Not a negotiation."

The tone was still calm.

But there was steel beneath it.

Elena took a step closer.

Slow.

Deliberate.

"And what happens," she said quietly, "if I decide not to behave the way you want?"

For a second—

The air shifted.

He didn't answer immediately.

Didn't move.

Just watched her.

Then—

He stepped closer.

Closing the distance.

Not touching.

But close enough to feel.

"I don't need you to behave," he said, his voice low.

A pause.

"I need you to understand the consequences."

Her breath slowed.

Not fear.

Focus.

"And those are?" she challenged.

His gaze dropped briefly—just for a second—before returning to her eyes.

"You'll find out."

That—

That was not an answer.

And somehow, it was worse.

Elena held his gaze for a moment longer.

Then stepped back.

Breaking the tension.

"Then I'll be ready by tonight."

She turned before he could respond.

But she felt it—

His eyes were on her.

Following.

Measuring.

Not letting go.

Adrian

She didn't hesitate when she agreed.

That was the first thing he noticed.

No fear.

No second-guessing.

Just calculation.

Adrian watched her as she turned away, his gaze lingering longer than necessary.

Most people, in her position, would have asked questions.

More conditions.

More control.

Elena Carter—

Did neither.

She adapted.

And that made her dangerous.

His jaw tightened slightly as she moved toward the door.

Confident.

Even now.

Even after everything.

Interesting.

"Wear something appropriate," he said.

She paused.

Just slightly.

Then glanced over her shoulder.

"And what exactly does that mean?"

A faint flicker of amusement crossed his expression.

"You'll know."

Her lips pressed into a thin line.

Clearly not satisfied.

Good.

She shouldn't be.

Because this wasn't meant to be comfortable.

It was meant to reshape her.

To position her.

To make the world see exactly what he wanted them to see.

His wife.

His choice.

His—

Adrian cut the thought short.

Unnecessary.

Control was enough.

He didn't need more.

Didn't want more.

And yet—

His gaze followed her again as she left the room.

Sharp.

Focused.

Possessive in a way he didn't acknowledge.

Not yet.

Elena

The door closed behind her with a soft click.

Only then did she stop.

Her hand rested briefly against the wall as she exhaled.

Slow.

Controlled.

But her mind wasn't calm.

Not even close.

"You'll find out."

The words echoed.

Not a threat.

Not a warning.

Something else.

Something she couldn't quite define.

Her fingers curled slightly.

This wasn't just a deal.

It wasn't just revenge.

It was something deeper.

More dangerous.

And she had stepped into it willingly.

Her reflection caught her attention in the mirror across the hall.

For a moment—

She just stared.

Trying to see the difference.

Trying to understand the woman standing there.

Then—

Her chin lifted slightly.

Her shoulders straightened.

If she was going to stand beside him tonight—

She wasn't doing it as someone broken.

She was doing it as someone who chose this.

No matter the cost.

Adrian

By the time evening approached, everything was already in place.

It always was.

Adrian adjusted his cufflinks slowly, his expression unreadable as his assistant spoke in the background.

"The board members will be present. So will Brooks."

A pause.

"That shouldn't be an issue."

Adrian didn't respond immediately.

His gaze remained fixed ahead.

Calm.

Unbothered.

"No," he said finally.

"It won't."

Because this—

This was exactly what he wanted.

Not just a public appearance.

A statement.

A shift.

And at the center of it—

Her.

Elena Carter.

No—

Mrs. Blackwood.

His jaw tightened slightly.

Not in tension.

In a decision.

Tonight wasn't just about being seen.

It was about making sure no one ever questioned it again.

Elena

The dress fit perfectly.

Too perfectly.

Like it had been chosen for her.

Measured.

Anticipated.

Her fingers smoothed over the fabric once, her expression unreadable.

Of course, he had planned this.

Of course, nothing was accidental.

A soft knock followed.

"He's waiting, ma'am."

Elena's gaze lifted to the mirror one last time.

And this time—

She didn't hesitate.

"Tell him," she said calmly, "I'm coming."
