Chapter 47 - Chapter 47

*A violent jolt nearly yanked me off my feet, the broken chain jerking tight around my ankle like a steel noose. I stumbled forward, catching myself on the cold stone wall just as the first guard rounded the corner below, his face a mask of blood and fury. The leader's roar echoed up the stairwell, closer now: "There she is! Don't let her reach the top!"*

*Panic surged in my chest, hot and suffocating. I dropped to my knees, fumbling with the chain where it had snagged in a deep crack in the stone. My fingers, slick with sweat and grime, slipped uselessly over the rusted metal. The footsteps were louder now, a thunderous drumbeat closing in. I could hear their heavy breathing, the clatter of their weapons.*

"Come on, come on," *I whispered, my voice a ragged sob. I yanked at the chain with all my remaining strength, a desperate, futile gesture. The metal bit deeper into my skin, but it held fast.*

"Please , please!". *I begged the chain as pulled at it with force. in the nick of time it snapped out from the hole.*

*The chain gave way with a sharp*snap*, and I nearly pitched forward onto the stairs. A wild, desperate laugh burst from my lips—half relief, half hysteria—as I scrambled to my feet. The guards were only a few steps below now; I could see the glint of their swords in the dim light, hear the leader's guttural snarl: "Grab her!"

*I didn't look back. I sprinted up the remaining stairs, the broken chain trailing behind me like a wounded snake. My lungs burned, my legs trembled, but the fear of being caught propelled me forward. The staircase ended at a heavy wooden door, its surface scarred with age. I shoulder-checked it with a grunt, and it flew open, revealing a vast, moonlit chamber.*

*I stumbled into the room, my breath catching in my throat. It was a tower, its walls lined with ancient tapestries that fluttered in the wind rushing through an open archway.*

*I ran to the archway as the men stomped into the room. "Come any closer and I will jump". *I threatened*

*The men skidded to a halt, their boots scraping against the stone floor. The leader—his face still twisted in pain, one hand pressed to his groin—held up a trembling hand, signaling the guards to stop. They fanned out behind him, swords drawn, their eyes flicking between me and the yawning void beyond the archway.*

"You wouldn't," *the leader panted, but his voice lacked its usual confidence. He took a tentative step forward, and I shifted my weight, leaning slightly over the edge. The wind howled, whipping my hair across my face, and for a terrifying moment, I thought I might actually fall. But I dug my fingers into the cold stone, anchoring myself.**

"Try me," *I snarled. My voice was steadier than I felt, a thin veil of courage over the panic clawing at my chest. The leader's gaze hardened. He exchanged a look with one of the guards, who nodded almost imperceptibly. Then, he took another step.*

*I sized up the height from the tower to the ground. I would shatter my brain in an instant if I do jump. I thought to my self as I gulped hard. the leader seeing that I was now distracted signaled his men closer. Realizing his antics I went closer to the railing.*

"I said stop or I will jump",*I emphasized once more.*
