Around the wreckage stretched a sea of vivid red blood.

A tall, beautiful woman appeared on-screen, driving a car.
She seemed to be on her way to pick someone up.
A delicate-looking boy with short hair stood beside a phone booth, listening to the recorded voice coming through the receiver.
"We are very sorry. Due to the current special emergency, all communication lines are unavailable."
"So that's no good… My cell phone has no signal either, and all the buses and trains have stopped running. Looks like there's no way to find her."
Shinji Ikari looked down at the photo in his hand—a picture of Misato Katsuragi in a daring, low-cut shirt, with even her bust size marked on it: C-cup!!
There was even a lipstick kiss printed on the photo.
"No choice… I'd better head to a shelter first."
Shinji glanced at the time on his watch.
Suddenly, he looked toward the road in the distance, where a blue-haired girl with crimson eyes, dressed in a school uniform, had appeared.
Rumble—!!
A tremendous blast wave surged forward and slammed into the building beside Shinji, exploding on impact.
The power cables strung along the streetlights swayed violently.
He looked up into the sky.
Dozens of VTOL aircraft were fighting a gigantic humanoid monster.
In the center of the creature's chest was a bright crimson orb, like some enormous jewel.
Its body was pitch-black, and it continued striding calmly toward its destination.
The next moment, all the aircraft and ground tanks opened fire on the monster at once. Missiles, autocannon fire, and rockets rained down on it in an endless barrage.
Boom—!
Boom—!
"All missiles have hit the target!"
"AAAAAAAH—!!"
The monster raised one long black arm toward the aircraft in front of it. With a sharp flash, a purple beam shot out and instantly pierced the plane that had just issued the command.
The beam fired from its palm sliced through the aircraft with effortless ease.
It had taken hundreds of solid shells across its body, yet not even a single crater appeared.
Then a massive halo materialized above its head, and its body rose straight into the air. Ignoring the aircraft surrounding it, it continued deeper into the city.
At the same time, Misato Katsuragi had already picked up Shinji and was racing toward EVA Headquarters.
Anti-ship missiles, armor-piercing steel-needle rounds, bunker-buster bombs—none of them could leave even the slightest scratch on the monster's body.
Its terrifying defense left viewers across countless worlds staring in disbelief. What in the world was wrong with the humans of that world? How had they provoked such a horrifying being?
"Hm. That should be an AT Field. Ordinary weapons can't harm an Angel."
Then, with no other options left, the Japanese military was forced to deploy an N2 mine against the monster known as an Angel.

A blinding pillar of light shot into the sky. A towering column of fire rose hundreds of meters high, the surrounding forest was scorched into wasteland, and a mushroom cloud billowed in the air.
The shockwave it unleashed flipped the car carrying Misato and Shinji.
Several minutes later, communications were finally restored on the screens inside EVA Headquarters.
And what appeared was a message of utter despair.
The Angel—Sachiel—was still alive and well within the sea of fire. It had merely grown a second face on its chest.
The overconfident Japanese military officers slumped weakly into their chairs, staring at the monster on the screen in despair.
If even humanity's trump card—nuclear weaponry—could not injure that thing, then what hope was left?

Gendo made his signature pose, folding his hands together as he sank into thought.
He was considering what effect this sudden development might have on his plans.
