"Why didn't you call me?" Edith asked the moment she and Viktor stepped inside her chambers. Turning her attention to the maidservants who were cleaning the massive windows, she instructed, "Everyone should leave. Finish this work later."
Once the room was entirely empty, Edith threw her arms around Viktor, hugging him tightly. "I was scared to death. I'm so sorry. My mom... I shouldn't have told her anything." The corners of her eyes grew wet, and she tilted her head to rest it against his shoulder for support.
Viktor patted her back gently, his presence calming. "You had no way of knowing something like this would happen. You were simply being honest with your mother." He gently pulled away from the embrace, using his thumb to softly wipe the tears from her eyes.
"The chaos has settled on the borders. The main culprit has been captured, so Prince Ensley told me I should head straight to the capital to see you first," Viktor explained.
