The silence stretched.
Heavy.
Unforgiving.
His eyes never left mine.
I should have looked away.
Any normal person would have.
But I couldn't.
It felt like I was trapped in place, held there by something I didn't understand.
Something deeper than fear.
Something… pulling.
"You were rejected."
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
Like what had just happened meant nothing to him.
Like I meant nothing.
"Yes."
The word came out softer this time.
My throat felt tight.
Dry.
But I refused to let it shake.
Not again.
Not in front of him.
Not in front of anyone.
For a moment, he said nothing.
Just watched me.
Not like the others had.
Not with pity.
Not with mockery.
But like he was… assessing me.
Studying every detail.
My fingers curled slightly at my sides under
his gaze.
I was suddenly aware of everything.
The tear tracks on my cheeks.
The way my chest still rose unevenly with each breath.
The fact that I was standing here...
Broken.
Exposed.
And yet…
He didn't look away.
"You accepted it."
Again.....not a question.
A statement.
"I did."
Silence followed.
The crowd shifted behind him, but no one dared step closer.
No one dared interrupt.
Even Ethan…
I didn't need to look to know he was still there.
Watching.
Feeling.
Something.
But it didn't matter anymore.
Not after what he had done.
"Interesting."
The word rolled off the stranger's tongue slowly.
Like he had just come to a conclusion.
Something about it made my stomach tighten.
"Most would beg."
He said with a little dry laugh.
A pause.
"Or break."
His gaze sharpened slightly.
"You did neither."
I didn't know what to say to that.
So I said nothing.
Because if I opened my mouth....
If I let even one more emotion slip through....
I wasn't sure I could stop.
His eyes lingered on me for a moment longer.
Then.....
He stepped closer.
My breath caught.
The distance between us disappeared in an instant.
Too close.
Close enough that I could feel the heat of his body.
Close enough that my instincts screamed at me to move.
To step back.....
But I didn't....
Because something inside me refused to.
Refused to show weakness again.
"Do you know who I am?" he asked.
His voice dropped slightly.
Lower.
More dangerous.
"Yes."
I responded confident than I expected....
The answer came out before I could think.
Because everyone knew.
The Lycan King.
A ruler feared across territories.
A man whose name alone could silence a room.
A man who destroyed anything that stood in his way.
"And yet," he murmured, tilting his head slightly, "you're not trembling."
I blinked.
Wasn't I?
My body felt tense.
My heart was racing.
My breath uneven.
But fear?
Not exactly.
Because compared to what I had just felt....
Compared to the way my heart had shattered moments ago....
This?
This felt… different.
"I think I've felt worse," I said quietly.
For a second...
Something flickered in his eyes.
Gone before I could understand it.
But it was there.
He straightened slightly.
And then.....
The air changed.
It wasn't subtle.
It wasn't gradual.
It was immediate.
Power.
Heavy.
Crushing.
It pressed against my skin, my chest, my lungs.
The crowd reacted instantly.
Several people stepped back.
Others lowered their heads.
Some couldn't even meet his gaze.
But I stayed where I was.
Even as my knees threatened to give out under the weight of it.
Even as my body screamed at me to submit.
I stayed.
Because I refused to kneel.
Not again.
Not after everything.
His eyes darkened slightly.
Like he had noticed.
Like he was… impressed.
Or intrigued.
"I've seen enough."
The words were quiet.
But they carried.
Through the silence.
Through the tension.
Through everything.
My heart skipped.
What did that mean?
Before I could ask.....
Before I could even think.....
He reached for me.
Everything inside me stilled.
His hand lifted slowly.
Deliberately.
Like he was giving me time to react.
To pull away.
But I didn't.
I couldn't.
Because something inside me.....
Something I didn't understand.....
Trusted him.
And that scared me more than anything else.
His fingers brushed against my chin.
Warm.
Firm.
He tilted my face up slightly.
Forcing me to meet his gaze fully.
And this time.....
There was no escaping it.
The intensity.
The weight.
The way his eyes seemed to see straight through me.
"You were rejected," he said again.
Softer this time.
Closer.
Like the words were meant only for me.
A small pause followed.
Then....
He said....
"I claim you."
The world stopped.
Completely.
The words didn't just echo.....
They exploded.
Gasps filled the air.
Shock rippled through the crowd like wildfire.
"No way....."
"The Lycan King...."
"He just...."
But I couldn't hear them.
Not properly.
Because all I could hear.....
Was my own heartbeat.
Loud.
Wild.
Unsteady.
"I…" My voice faltered. "What?"
This couldn't be happening.
Not like this.
Not now.
Not after everything.
"You heard me."
He said softly....
His grip on my chin tightened slightly.
Not enough to hurt.
But enough to keep me still.
"I don't care about your weakness."
Each word was steady.
Certain.
"I don't care about your late awakening."
My breath hitched.
"I don't care what they call you."
Something inside my chest twisted.
Because no one had ever said that before.
No one had ever.....
"I will make you stronger."
The words sent a strange chill down my spine.
Not fear.
Something else.
Something deeper.
"Stronger than all of them."
And laugh softly....
His gaze flickered briefly toward the crowd.
Toward Ethan.
Toward Selene.
Then back to me.
"And when I'm done…"
A pause...
Just long enough to make my breath catch.
"They will bow."
Silence followed.
Heavy.
Unreal.
I stared at him.
At the man who had just.....
Claimed me.
Like it was nothing.
Like it was everything.
Like I was something worth taking.
My lips parted slightly.
But no words came out.
Because for the first time since everything had fallen apart....
I didn't know what to feel.
