Chapter 8 - Collecting Interest

On the night street somewhere in the far outer district of Jinkai City, Kars strolled along the empty road under the magic lamplight with his hands inside his pants pockets and his fur hood pulled low, casting shadows over the upper half of his face.

His heavy footsteps echoing between the buildings around him as Kars walked menacingly in the middle of the road and made some people who were still out in the night quickly turn around and run away in the opposite direction of where he was coming from as they quickly hid anywhere they could find for Kars to pass them by without drawing his attention.

The local people knew better than to be near him when the infamous slum boss was out walking around at this hour, which only means that he is out to collect debt or murder someone.

While walking through the streets of the far outer district, Kars noticed that the alleys between the buildings kind of reeked faintly of wet garbage and something rotten, but Kars didn't bother wrinkling his nose or paying attention to it, as he had smelled something much worse in the slum already.

"I really should renovate and clean up my place..." Kars muttered quietly while thinking about cleaning up the filthy slum of his after tonight since he has more than enough manpower for the task, and if someone somehow disagrees, then he would like to see how they are going to try to stop him from cleaning up the slum.

As he was walking menacingly and scaring quite a few of the local people for a while, Kars finally saw his first destination of tonight loomed ahead. It is a large, unremarkable two-story stone building with a big double iron door, guarded by two burly thugs who dress in gladiator-style armor, showing off their bulging muscles and obviously being there only for intimidation rather than for their competency of guarding the entrance.

"H-hey, is that guy..." The guards' bodies immediately stiffened as they spotted Kars coming toward them, their hands gripping their weapons that were strapped on their belts nervously as they started to sweat, a clear sign of a guilty conscience.

Kars doesn't even speak to them before he just jerks his chin at them, and then the two burly men suddenly get lifted up into the air by an invisible force with glowing green energy enveloping their bodies, their armor clinking as they flail around frantically and uselessly while Kars holds them up with his telekinesis magic.

"W-what the fuck—ghhk...?!" They managed to cry out in surprise before Kars telekinetically twisted their heads in 360 degrees with a disturbing bone-snapping sound, killing the two of them in the air instantly as he pulled their limping bodies toward him and then draining their souls that were still lingering inside their bodies while he was walking to the entrance of the building like nothing happened.

It didn't even take five seconds before the two corpses in the air were shivering up and reducing into just skeletons as their souls and life force were consumed entirely and their clothes and armor slid off their meatless forms. Then the bones turned to dust in the wind a second later as two humans disappeared just like that.

Right now Kars's soul-draining mastery is so advanced and efficient that he doesn't leave anything to waste, and he doesn't even flinch because of the memories of the two men flowing inside his mind anymore as he quickly sorts them out in a second, and soon Kars will be able to turn normal people into dust with just a gesture of his hand as his mastery improves.

When he is standing in front of the double door, Kars grunts once, and with the flex of his telekinesis, the iron door immediately bursts inward with the hinges groaning loudly as they tear free from the wood frame.

Inside the building, the stench of tobacco and alcohol thickens the air as Kars sees women and men draped in many diverse styles of attire freeze like roaches, their heads uniformly snapping in his direction with their eyes widened in surprise.

"Good fucking evening, huh?" Kars stepped through the shattered iron door as he looked around the interior of the gambling den as the gamblers and staff alike scrambled back in fear. One of the guests, a woman in a vermillion dress, even knocked over her table, spilling gold coins across the floor. None are bold enough to pick them up in this situation, though.

"If you don't want to fucking die, keep out of my way and stay still." Kars didn't raise his voice, but everyone in the building still heard him pretty clearly, as most of the people were nodding repeatedly, not really wanting to find out if he was serious in following through with his threat.

But there is always the finest of humanity ready to prove themselves stupid, as a man near the bar secretly reached for his dagger anyway, despite Kars's warning.

And unfortunately, as the man's fingers barely grazed the hilt of his dagger, his body suddenly got enveloped by green energy and pulled strongly by an invisible force, bumping into many people and furniture along the way to the slum boss, who noticed the man's movement and decided to make an example out of him.

"Are you retarded...?" Kars murmured questioningly as he raised his hand and grabbed the incoming man by his neck, his amber eyes observing the man that looked just like an ordinary mob character with brown hair and brown eyes indifferently, and then before the man could even make any excuse, the scream immediately erupted from the man's throat as Kars mercilessly drained his soul in a few seconds, reducing him to just a skeleton that was crumbling to dust in his hand while the man's clothes and boots fell to the floor.

The sight of a man reduced to dust effectively caused the guests and staff to collectively piss themselves as they looked down, avoiding eye contact with Kars while trembling in terror. No one wants to be the next example, it seems.

"Hmm..." While sorting through his victim's memory, Kars discovered that the man was an agent of some far-away kingdom named Jermar in the western continent that sent him here to search for a fugitive, an assassin with the moniker of Bowel Hunter, a rather infamous killer in the western continent who just assassinated a king of Jermar a month ago.

Seeing that there was nothing related to him or anything more interesting from the man's memory, Kars then resumed his search and destroy mission inside the gambling den, his amber eyes scanning the terrified faces of the people huddled together. He wasn't here for them unless they were stupid enough to get in his way.

The real targets were the owner operating in the back rooms, the ones who'd been leeching off his Blood Fund's money using hopeless gamblers who lost all their money in the gambling and making them take loans from his business.

And speaking of his target...

"What the fuck is going on?! Who causes such a ruckus? You know whose place this is?!" A bald fat man with a pig face and pig ears in a flashy yellow robe burst through the back door, flanked by six armed guards. His beady eyes scanned the entire interior before landing on Kars, who stood amidst the wreckage of iron doors at the entrance. The pigman's arrogant face faltered as recognition flashed in his eyes.

"Oh shit, run away!" The pigman then instantly turns 180 degrees as he screams and runs toward where he just came from, pushing his guards out of the way in his escape.

"There you are..." Kars's smirk widens as his fingers twitch, and suddenly a two-headed spear materializes in his hand with a flash of green light as he summons it from his personal armory.

Kars then held the spear up and threw it at the running pigman in one fluid motion as the spear streaked through the gambling den, cutting the air like a green bullet before punching through the pigman's back and belly accurately with a wet crunch and painful squeal while the pigman guards froze, watching their employer's body get carried off the ground by the powerful momentum of the spear before the pigman slid across the floorboards when he fell back to the ground.

"Get over here." Kars said as he flexed his fingers again and telekinetically pulled his spear back along with the pigman, who squealed in pain as the spear dragged him backward through the air, his fat fingers with many gold rings clawing at the shaft protruding from his gut, trying to hold on to it.

As the spear arrived, Kars caught it easily and raised the pigman high like a kebab skewer briefly before slamming him down onto a nearby table, causing wood to splinter, coins to scatter, and the fat man's breath to leave him in a pained wheeze.

"What's the hurry, huh? Stay and have a conversation with me, you fat fuck." Kars stepped close to the lying pigman and pressed his boot onto his back, pinning him to the ruined table as blood dribbled from the pigman's lips and snout.

Seeing the pigman's pitiful state, the guards immediately came back to their senses but ended up hesitating as their pathetic loyalty warred with survival instinct until Kars gave them courage with a glance filled with malice that made them choose their lives over their boss instantly.

"Have a good day!" The pigman's guards cried out and then dropped their weapons in unison with a clatter of steel on floorboards before they bolted for the exit, leaving their fat boss behind.

Kars didn't bother stopping them since he already got what he sought as he turned to lean down to stare at the pigman who currently whimpered beneath his boot.

"You're pretty bold to try leeching off my business," Kars mused, twisting the spear slightly just to hear the pigman's choked scream with blood gushing out from the wound that was seeping into the wood beneath them. "Did you really think I was not going to fucking notice?"

"Hiiiiiiikkkuugggaah—!" The pigman's squeals turned into wet gurgles as Kars moved the spear around like a joystick to make the pigman suffer.

"P-please...! M-mercy...! I can pay..." the pigman gasped with desperation clear on his fat face. "I'll pay back everything...!"

"Heh, that way I'm here... so you can pay me back... with your shitty life!" Kars' grin widened as his boot pressed down harder on the pigman's back, causing his ribs to groan ominously beneath the weight as the pigman squealed in pain and with a horrified expression at what was to come.

The people and staff watched on with bated breath, and then they flinched when the bones snapped, and a pig's wheezing squeal followed in the gambling den.

The pigman's screams soon dissolved into wet, bubbling rasps as Kars twisted the spear deeper, his expression filled with sadistic glee. Kars could feel the pigman's frantic pulse through his boot as he ground the pigman's ribcage flat under his boot before he lifted it off the dying man below him.

"You're one lucky pig, you know that? Right now I'm on a tight schedule and can't spend much time with you," Kars murmured, his fingers tightening around the spear shaft as a wisp of green energy appears around his hand. The pigman's bloodshot eyes bulged as Kars began soul-draining him. "So I'll make this quick."

"Hiiiiiiikkkk...?!" And with a brief, confused squeal of the pigman, Kars drained his soul and completely consumed it, leaving behind only a crumpled yellow robe and a blood stain on the ruined table.

Inside the gambling den, the people remained silent even after the pigman turned to dust, some even peeing on themselves again quietly. None dared breathe too loud or move a muscle when Kars was still around.

With his first objective complete, Kars straightened and patted the dust off his clothes, flicking the spear clean of blood before it dissolved into green light as he unsommoned the spear. The silence in the gambling den was so loud that he could even hear some people's teeth chattering.

"Well then..." Kars hummed as he turned his head slowly, scanning the room like a predator deciding which prey to hunt next, but much to the relief of the people, Kars simply turned away and strode toward the entrance, as his business here was concluded.

Kars steps out of the building with the night wind caressing his face as he decides the next target in his mind, leaving behind only silence and a faint murmur of the people behind him, and Kars knows that his infamy definitely will become higher after tonight's deeds.

Anyway, there are still 39 more stops waiting for him to visit tonight. Many groups of fools who thought they could play him without getting burned, and Kars was going to remind them harshly to not play with fire.

"Well, ready or not..." Kars grins before he starts running as he buffs his body with magic to make his speed so very fast that he only leaves behind a trail of green light as he speeds through the city of Jinkai...
