Chapter 5: Shadow Work
The abandoned building sat two blocks past the Abnegation sector boundary, in that grey zone where faction territory blurred into Factionless neglect.
I'd scouted it three times during daylight volunteer shifts—a collapsed warehouse with enough standing walls to provide cover and enough distance from patrol routes to make discovery unlikely. Perfect testing ground.
Getting there after curfew was the first crime I'd committed deliberately since arriving in this world.
The grey clothes of Abnegation were designed for visibility—virtue through transparency, the faction's belief that those with nothing to hide should hide nothing. I moved through streets I'd memorized, timing my crossings to avoid the windows where light still flickered, counting steps between shadow pools.
My heart hammered against ribs that still felt borrowed.
"This is stupid. This is reckless. This is necessary."
The building's eastern entrance hung off one hinge. I slipped inside and stood in darkness thick enough to taste.
Time to learn what the system had given me.
[SHADOW ARSENAL — FEAR PULSE]
[DESCRIPTION: EMITS A PSYCHIC WAVE THAT TRIGGERS PRIMAL FEAR RESPONSE IN ALL SENTIENT BEINGS WITHIN RANGE]
[RANGE: 15 METERS (TIER 1)]
[COST: 10 NEGATIVE KARMA PER USE]
[COOLDOWN: 30 SECONDS]
[WARNING: ALLIES WITHIN RANGE ARE NOT IMMUNE]
I read the description twice. The warning at the end registered as abstract information—the kind of caveat you noted and filed without fully processing.
"Test it."
I focused on the ability the way I'd focused on CST—mental intention channeled toward a specific function. Fear Pulse activated.
The wave expanded outward from my chest like a silent explosion. It hit the empty walls, the collapsed ceiling, the shadows pooled in every corner—
And then it bounced back.
Three seconds of pure, undiluted terror. My legs buckled. My vision tunneled to a pinprick. Every survival instinct the human body possessed fired simultaneously—run, hide, fight, freeze—all of them screaming at once in a cacophony of primal panic.
I hit the floor on my hands and knees, dry-heaving, shaking so hard my teeth chattered.
"Allies within range are not immune. I'm the only one in range. I am my own ally."
The realization arrived through the fog of fading fear like a cruel joke. I'd just demonstrated that my own psychic attack could incapacitate me. In combat, against actual enemies, Fear Pulse would hit everyone—including myself.
[FEAR PULSE — SELF-HIT DETECTED]
[NOTE: AT CURRENT RSV (33), USER IS VULNERABLE TO OWN ABILITY. RECOMMEND RSV ABOVE 60 FOR IMMUNITY.]
"Would have been nice to know that before I tested it."
I stayed on the floor until my hands stopped shaking. Three minutes, maybe four. The nausea faded slower than the fear—my body still convinced something terrible was about to happen even though my mind had processed the false alarm.
Okay. Fear Pulse: dangerous, indiscriminate, not ready for use.
Shadow Step next.
[SHADOW ARSENAL — SHADOW STEP]
[DESCRIPTION: INSTANTANEOUS TELEPORTATION THROUGH SHADOW/DARKNESS]
[RANGE: 10 METERS (TIER 1)]
[COST: 5 NEGATIVE KARMA PER USE]
[COOLDOWN: 10 SECONDS]
[NOTE: ENTRY AND EXIT POINTS MUST BE IN SHADOW OR DARKNESS. SHIMMER DELAY VISIBLE FOR (100 - RFX)/100 SECONDS AFTER ARRIVAL.]
I picked a shadow on the far side of the warehouse—ten meters distant, darkness pooled behind a fallen support beam. Focused. Activated.
The world dissolved.
One moment I was standing near the entrance; the next I was crouched behind the beam, the taste of copper in my mouth and a disorientation that felt like being turned inside out and reassembled slightly wrong.
"That was—"
Incredible. Terrifying. The closest thing to actual power I'd experienced since waking up in this body.
[SHADOW STEP — SUCCESSFUL]
[KARMA: +30 → +25]
[NOTE: SHIMMER DELAY AT CURRENT RFX (31): 0.69 SECONDS. VISIBLE TO ATTENTIVE OBSERVERS.]
I checked my hands. They looked solid, normal. But for less than a second after arriving, I'd been visible as a shimmer—a distortion in the air that anyone watching would have noticed.
"RFX needs to be higher. Forty minimum, probably fifty for combat reliability."
I tested it again. Another five karma spent. The copper taste was stronger this time, the disorientation more pronounced.
[KARMA: +25 → +20]
"The cost adds up fast."
Two uses and I'd burned ten karma—a third of my total positive balance. At this rate, extended combat would push me into negative territory before I landed three hits.
Movement outside.
[DIVERGENT PROTOCOL ANALYSIS ACTIVATED]
[ABNEGATION CURFEW ENFORCEMENT PATROL DETECTED]
[DISTANCE: 200 METERS — APPROACHING]
[DETECTION PROBABILITY AT CURRENT POSITION: 34%]
[RECOMMENDED ACTION: IMMEDIATE EVACUATION]
Ice flooded my veins. I killed the testing session and focused on the shadow nearest my bedroom window—nearly three blocks away, well beyond Shadow Step's range.
I'd have to chain jumps. Three minimum, probably four.
First jump: building exit to the alley shadow forty meters north. Karma: +15. Second jump: alley to the collapsed awning on Forty-Third Street. Karma: +10. Third jump: awning to the drainage channel behind the community hall. Karma: +5.
[WARNING: KARMA APPROACHING EQUILIBRIUM]
Fourth jump: drainage channel to the shadow beneath my bedroom window.
[KARMA: +5 → 0]
I tumbled through darkness and emerged in familiar territory, gasping, hands braced against the house's exterior wall. The patrol's footsteps were audible now—two blocks east, moving perpendicular to my position.
They hadn't seen me. Probably.
I climbed through the window I'd left cracked open and collapsed onto the floor of the grey room, heart pounding so hard I could feel it in my teeth.
"That was insane. That was the stupidest thing I've done since getting here."
But my hands were still shaking with something that wasn't entirely fear.
Power. Real power. The ability to move through shadows like they were doorways. The potential to become something more than a sixteen-year-old in a borrowed body.
I flexed my fingers in the darkness—the same thin-wristed, soft hands I'd looked at every day for five weeks. They didn't look different.
But they were.
[SESSION SUMMARY]
[FEAR PULSE: TESTED — SELF-TARGETING VULNERABILITY CONFIRMED]
[SHADOW STEP: TESTED — FUNCTIONAL, HIGH KARMA COST, RFX-DEPENDENT STEALTH]
[COERCION WHISPER: UNTESTED — REQUIRES SENTIENT TARGET]
[PAIN SIPHON: UNTESTED — REQUIRES COMBAT CONDITIONS]
[KARMA BALANCE: 0 (EQUILIBRIUM)]
[RECOMMENDED: INCREASE RFX TO 40+ BEFORE FURTHER TESTING]
Seven weeks until the aptitude test. Seven weeks to build a body capable of using the weapons the system had provided.
The wildflower on the nightstand caught the moonlight—a small purple ghost in a room of grey.
I stared at it until my heartbeat slowed, then closed my eyes and tried to remember what sleep felt like when you weren't afraid of your own abilities.
