The air inside the unsealed granite vault was heavy, thick with the smell of seventy-year-old whale oil, ozone, and cold, decaying paper.

Prince Bastian held his brass lantern high, its warm yellow flame casting long, shifting shadows across the vaulted stone ceiling and damp rock walls. Beside him, Thomas Vance leaned heavily on his silver-tipped stick, his aged face pale as he stared at the intricate brass machine sitting in the exact center of the dark room.

Sarah knelt on the cold stone floor, her ink-stained fingers hovering inches away from hundreds of delicate copper needles protruding from a polished brass logic drum.

"It's not an accounting desk," Sarah whispered, her voice tight with awe and quiet dread. "Elara... this is a massive analog differential engine. It's built to process telegraph impulses directly from the coastal sea-cables."
