Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: The Cruel Twist – When the Lead Slips Through the Fingers

The Saturday morning sky over Inglewood was clear and bright, but the atmosphere on the pitch felt thick with pressure. This friendly had drawn more eyes than any before it. Scouts from three different academies lined the touchline, clipboards in hand, phones recording. The Inglewood Gazette had their lead sports writer and a photographer. A regional youth football magazine sent a stringer. Local fans filled the small stands, some holding hand-made banners with Alex's name.

Today's opponents were Ventura United Academy — a tactically sharp, patient side that built from the back, rotated smoothly, and struck hard on the counter. They arrived in crisp white kits with blue trim, their players moving with the calm confidence of a team that had already knocked off several stronger academy sides this season. Their coach stood opposite, arms folded, watching everything with quiet intensity.

In the locker room the air was heavy. Coach Ramirez spoke calmly but firmly.

"Ventura doesn't panic. They control the tempo, they press smartly, and they punish every loose touch. Miguel, Jamal — win the midfield battle and give Alex time. Tyler, stay alert for the channels. Ace…"

Coach stopped in front of Alex, eyes steady.

"You are the link. Drop deep when we need stability, surge forward when gaps appear. Create, attack, and lead. This is where we test ourselves against real quality. Make them feel your presence."

Miguel Torres nodded. "We've got your back in the middle. Keep the ball alive."

Tyler Brooks tightened his laces. "One good ball and I'm gone."

Jamal Washington rolled his shoulders. "I'll sweep behind you. Let's make this ours."

Alex stood tall in his faded red-and-white jersey, No. 10 on his back. His face stayed calm, but his mind burned.

Ventura thinks they can dictate the rhythm. Today I show them one player can break their system. I'm here to win.

The blue system screen hovered only for him.

First Half

0' – Ventura kicked off. Their central midfielder rolled a short pass to the right winger, who tried to probe the flank with measured dribbling. Jamal Washington stepped in with a clean tackle. The ball rolled to Miguel Torres. Miguel played it inside to Alex at the halfway line.

Alex took a perfect first touch, scanned, faked left, and burst right, leaving the closing Ventura midfielder flat-footed. The small crowd murmured.

3' – Alex pushed into the final third. Two Ventura defenders closed fast. He dropped his shoulder, triggered Shadow Dribble, and slipped the ball through the gap to Tyler Brooks on a curved run. Tyler shot hard, but the keeper blocked with his legs. The rebound dropped to Alex. One silky touch, a glance at the far post, and he curled a 22-yard shot. The keeper tipped it over for a corner.

The sideline commentator called it clearly: "Rivera showing early vision and quality! Inglewood already threatening."

7' – Alex took the corner from the right. Short run-up, whipped inswinger. Jamal rose and headed goalward. The keeper parried. Tyler Brooks pounced on the loose ball and smashed it home from six yards.

1–0 Inglewood Youth SC

The home crowd roared. Ventura looked surprised but reset quickly.

The commentator noted: "Brooks finishes the set-piece! Inglewood lead 1-0. Rivera's delivery was pinpoint."

12' – Ventura responded. Left winger whipped in a low cross. Jamal headed clear, but the ball dropped in midfield. Alex controlled, beat the press with a roulette turn, and played a no-look pass to Miguel. Miguel returned it first-time. Alex unleashed a 28-yard rocket that flew just wide.

The commentator said, "Rivera again! That strike had venom — inches from doubling the lead."

18' – Midfield duel. Ventura's central midfielder tried to barge Alex off the ball. Alex held firm, spun away, beat two men with quick footwork, and threaded a reverse pass to Tyler. Tyler's shot was saved brilliantly. Alex followed up, controlled the rebound, and slotted low into the corner.

2–0

The crowd erupted. "Rivera! Rivera!" chants started. Ventura players looked rattled, talking among themselves.

The commentator's voice rose: "Rivera scores! 2-0 to Inglewood! The youngster is running this game from the No. 10 role."

25' – Ventura counter. Right winger crossed dangerously. Alex read it, won the header, then launched a solo run, beating three men before chipping over the defense. Tyler headed it back to him. Alex smashed it into the roof of the net from twelve yards.

3–0

Half-time was moments away. The crowd was on its feet. Scouts scribbled furiously.

The commentator called it: "Another solo masterclass from Rivera! Inglewood lead 3-0 at the break. Ventura is in shock."

Half-Time

In the locker room Coach Ramirez was smiling. "Keep the intensity. They will come out fighting. Stay sharp."

Miguel slapped Alex's back. "You're unstoppable today."

Tyler grinned. "Three goals and it's all you, Ace."

Jamal nodded. "We've got this."

Alex stayed focused. The system stayed silent and secret.

Second Half

Ventura came out like a different team — aggressive, pressing high, moving the ball faster.

47' – Ventura won the ball high up. Quick combination play. Their striker slipped between defenders and slotted past the keeper.

3–1

The commentator said, "Ventura pulls one back. Inglewood still lead but the momentum is shifting."

55' – Ventura corner. Tall center-back rose and powered a header. Alex tried to clear but the ball deflected off his leg into the net.

3–2

The crowd grew nervous. Ventura smelled blood.

62' – Alex tried to respond. He dropped deep, won the ball, beat two men, and played a perfect through-ball to Tyler. Tyler rounded the keeper but his shot was cleared off the line by a desperate defender.

The commentator noted, "Rivera creates another golden chance, but Ventura survive."

68' – Ventura broke again. Fast counter. Their winger crossed. The striker headed it powerfully. The keeper got a hand to it, but the ball trickled in.

3–3

The home crowd fell quiet. Ventura players celebrated wildly.

The commentator said, "Ventura equalizes! This game has completely turned. Inglewood's lead is gone."

75' – Alex pushed forward desperately. He won a free-kick 25 yards out. He curled it beautifully, but the Ventura keeper made a spectacular diving save.

82' – Ventura counter once more. Quick passes, a one-two, and their striker finished low past the advancing keeper.

3–4

The final minutes were tense. Alex tried everything — surging runs, through-balls, long shots — but Ventura defended deep and smart.

90+3' – Final whistle.

Final Score: Inglewood Youth SC 3 – 4 Ventura United Academy

The home crowd was stunned into silence. Ventura players celebrated. Inglewood players stood with heads down.

Coach Ramirez gathered them. "We led 3-0. We lost focus. Learn from this. The fight is what matters."

Miguel patted Alex's shoulder. "You gave everything, Ace. We let you down."

Tyler looked gutted. "I missed two big chances. Sorry, man."

Jamal shook his head. "We collapsed after half-time. We'll bounce back."

Alex kept his face steady, but inside he burned with frustration and resolve.

We were winning 3-0. We lost control. This is the lesson I needed. Next time I carry harder. No more regrets.

The system screen appeared only for him.

The local reporter approached Alex. "Tough one today, Alex. You were brilliant early, but Ventura turned it around. Any thoughts for the paper?"

Alex answered calmly. "We started strong but lost concentration. Credit to Ventura. We'll learn and come back stronger."

The headline the next day would read: "Rivera Shines, But Inglewood Crumble in Dramatic 4-3 Defeat."

Emma waited near the fence, eyes soft with understanding. She gave him a small, secret smile that said she would be there later if he needed.

The climb had hit its first real wall — and Alex was already planning how to break through it.
