Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Debut Friendly vs LA Galaxy Youth Reserves

The referee's whistle cut through the afternoon air, signaling the start of the second half. The Inglewood Youth SC players jogged back onto the patchy pitch with fresh determination in their steps. Alex took his position as the attacking midfielder — the No. 10 role right behind the striker Tyler Brooks. He felt the eyes of the small crowd on him, the weight of the moment settling comfortably on his shoulders.

In the locker room just minutes earlier, Coach Ramirez had been almost speechless. "Three-nil at half-time against the Galaxy Reserves? I don't know what clicked for you, Rivera, but keep doing it. Miguel, Jamal, keep the midfield solid. Tyler, stay high and make those runs. Ace — you're the engine today. Link everything, create, and keep attacking."

Miguel Torres, the captain, had slapped Alex on the back. "You're playing like a man possessed, Ace. Keep feeding me those balls and we'll finish this."

Tyler Brooks had grinned. "Just get me one more clean chance. I'm ready."

Now, on the pitch, Alex took a deep breath. The Galaxy Reserves looked frustrated and angry, their white-and-blue kits already stained with grass. They kicked off, determined to claw back into the game.

Second Half

48' – Galaxy Reserves started aggressively, pushing forward in numbers. Their right winger received the ball and tried to beat Jamal Washington on the outside. Jamal stood firm and won the tackle cleanly. The ball rolled loose to Miguel Torres in midfield. Miguel played a quick pass inside to Alex.

Alex dropped slightly deeper to receive it, scanning the pitch with calm eyes. One perfect first touch with "God's First Touch" and the ball stuck to his foot. He took a half-step forward, drew two Galaxy midfielders toward him, then played a sharp one-two with Miguel. The return pass came back perfectly. Alex surged into the gap, beating the closing defender with a quick drop of the shoulder.

The crowd murmured as he carried the ball into the final third.

50' – Alex looked up and saw Tyler Brooks making a clever run in behind the Galaxy center-backs. He waited one extra second, then slid a perfectly weighted through-ball into the channel. Tyler took it in stride, but the Galaxy keeper rushed out and blocked the shot with his legs. The ball rebounded toward Alex, who had continued his run.

He controlled it with one touch, took a quick look, and curled a shot toward the far post from twenty-two yards. The ball bent beautifully but the keeper managed to tip it over the bar.

The sideline commentator's voice boomed over the small PA system. "Rivera with the vision and the shot! Inglewood are still dominating!"

52' – Corner for Inglewood. Alex stood over the ball on the right side. He took a short run-up and delivered a whipped inswinging cross. Jamal Washington rose highest at the near post and headed it goalward. The keeper parried it, but Tyler Brooks was first to the rebound and tapped it in.

4–0

The crowd erupted. Emma jumped up in the front row, screaming Alex's name. Coach Ramirez was laughing on the sideline, clapping wildly. The Galaxy Reserves players looked demoralized, heads down as they walked back to the center circle.

54' – Galaxy Reserves tried to respond. Their central midfielder won the ball and played a long pass toward their left winger. Alex read the play perfectly, dropped back, and intercepted it with a sliding tackle. He popped back up instantly, beat the first presser with a quick feint, and played a no-look pass to Miguel Torres.

Miguel laid it back first-time. Alex took one touch to set himself and unleashed a powerful 28-yard drive that whistled just wide of the post. The crowd groaned in disbelief.

The commentator shouted, "Rivera with the interception and the shot! This kid is everywhere on the pitch!"

58' – A physical duel in midfield. One of the Galaxy Reserves' stronger midfielders tried to shoulder-charge Alex off the ball. Alex used his enhanced physicality, braced himself, and held firm. He won the ball cleanly, spun away, and played a quick one-two with Tyler Brooks before driving forward again.

He beat two defenders with sharp changes of direction, then slipped a clever reverse pass into the path of Miguel Torres. Miguel shot from the edge of the box, but the keeper saved it. Alex was first to the rebound, controlling it with "God's First Touch" and firing a low shot into the bottom corner.

5–0

The home crowd went absolutely wild. "Ace! Ace! Ace!" chants rang out louder than ever. Emma was waving his hoodie like a flag, her face glowing with pride. Coach Ramirez was jumping up and down on the sideline.

The commentator was nearly screaming. "Rivera with another goal! Five-nil! This is not a friendly anymore — this is a statement!"

62' – Galaxy Reserves pushed forward desperately. Their right winger broke down the flank and crossed dangerously. Jamal won the header, but the ball fell to Alex on the halfway line. He took one touch, looked up, and spotted Tyler Brooks making another intelligent run. Alex played a perfectly timed lofted pass over the defense. Tyler controlled it, rounded the keeper, and scored.

6–0

The crowd was in full party mode now. Parents were standing on chairs. Local scouts were scribbling furiously in their notebooks. The Galaxy Reserves looked completely broken — heads down, shoulders slumped, arguing among themselves.

Alex jogged back, face calm, but inside he felt the pure satisfaction of dominance.

68' – Another attacking sequence. Alex dropped deep to help build from the back. He received the ball from Jamal, played a quick one-two with Miguel, then carried it forward in a mazy run. He beat three Galaxy players with a series of feints and quick footwork, then played a delicate chip over the defense for Tyler. Tyler headed it down for Alex, who had continued his run. Alex took one touch and smashed it into the roof of the net from twelve yards.

7–0

The commentator's voice cracked. "Rivera with a brilliant solo run and finish! Seven-nil! This kid from Inglewood is a phenomenon!"

72' – Galaxy Reserves tried one last counter. Alex tracked back, won the ball with a perfectly timed tackle, and immediately started another attack. He played a no-look pass to Miguel, who laid it off first-time. Alex took a touch, looked up, and curled a 25-yard shot that bent into the top corner.

8–0

The crowd was chanting his name non-stop. Emma was screaming louder than anyone. Coach Ramirez had his hands on his head in disbelief.

The final ten minutes were pure control. Alex dictated the tempo, dropped deep when needed, pressed high when the opportunity came, and created two more chances that were narrowly saved. He completed 96% of his passes, won every duel he entered, and left the Galaxy Reserves completely demoralized.

The referee blew the final whistle.

Final Score: Inglewood Youth SC 8 – 0 LA Galaxy Youth Reserves

The small pitch erupted. Players from both teams surrounded Alex. The Galaxy Reserves coach walked over, shaking his head. "Kid, I've never seen a fifteen-year-old dominate a game like that. You're special."

Coach Ramirez pulled Alex into a tight hug. "You just earned yourself a real contract, son. Small stipend starting next week, but it's real money. We'll sort the details on Monday. You saved this club today."

Miguel Torres, Tyler Brooks, and Jamal Washington lifted Alex onto their shoulders as the crowd cheered. "You carried us, Ace!" Miguel shouted. "You were unbelievable!"

Alex's family waited at the edge of the pitch. Mom had tears streaming down her face. Dad looked stunned, like he couldn't believe what he had just witnessed. Mia was jumping up and down, screaming his name.

Dad pulled him into a crushing hug. "Son… I don't know how you did that, but keep doing it. That was the best thing I've ever seen in my life. We might actually be able to breathe now."

Mom wiped her eyes. "The debt collector is coming tomorrow. That performance… it's going to help, Ace. It really is."

The club officials handed Alex a small envelope — the first prize money for the win: four hundred dollars. It wasn't much, but it was the first real money he had ever earned from football. He handed it straight to his dad.

Emma waited a little further back, smiling secretly, cheeks flushed with pride and something hotter. She mouthed "Later" when their eyes met.

Alex kept his face calm the entire time. Inside his head, the blue system screen finally dinged, visible only to him.
