Chiyoda, Tokyo.

07:48 AM.

Dressed in a white shirt with a black suit, and wearing the black tie Rei had given him, Ritsu sat in the driver's seat, waiting at a red light and yawning, clearly still half-asleep.

Today was his first day reporting to the Metropolitan Police Department. He had been assigned to the First Investigation Division, Violent Crimes Section 3, holding the rank of Inspector.

As for why he was so tired, when he returned to his apartment in Beika Town last night, he found that after six months of being unoccupied, it was so dusty that even someone like him, who wasn't particularly fussy about cleanliness, could barely step inside.

Thankfully, with help from Rei and Hiro, the three of them worked together to clean the place. By the time they had finished bathing and settling in, it was already past midnight.

For Ritsu, anything less than six hours of sleep meant inevitable drowsiness.

Forcing himself to stay alert, he stopped by a nearby convenience store and bought an iced latte with a perfect 50-50 ratio of coffee and ice. After downing it in one go and tossing the trash, he parked his car in the Metropolitan Police Department lot and headed inside.

Becoming an Inspector at such a young age would undoubtedly draw skepticism from older officers but Ritsu wasn't worried. He had always believed that results spoke louder than anything else.

After completing the onboarding procedures, he pushed open the door to Section 3's office. The first thing that greeted him was a strange mix of tobacco smoke and the smell of meat buns.

A young woman seated near the entrance was nibbling on a meat bun, while not far away, a veteran detective in his forties stood smoking as he spoke on the phone.

When he saw who had entered, Megure looked surprised. "Huh? Aren't you that police academy student who helped solve a case at a yakiniku restaurant?"

Ritsu hadn't expected that the Inspector in his department would be Megure Juzo. Just half a year ago, they had been worlds apart and now they were colleagues of the same rank.

Despite his young success, Ritsu remained respectful. Japan's seniority culture still mattered, and he wasn't the type to be arrogant.

"Hello, Inspector Megure."

Megure picked up the file on his desk, it confirmed that the new Inspector assigned to Section 3 was indeed this young man. Thinking about Ritsu's investigative abilities, he immediately brightened and walked over, clapping his hands.

"Alright, everyone, look over here!"

Feeling all eyes turn toward him, Ritsu felt slightly uncomfortable. No matter how many times it happened, he could never quite get used to being the center of attention.

"This is this year's top graduate. Only eighteen years old, and he passed the Class I civil service exam with a perfect score, something unprecedented. He'll be serving as an Inspector in our First Division, Violent Crimes Section 3. Sasajima-kun, go ahead and introduce yourself."

Ritsu gave a formal ninety-degree bow, followed by a crisp salute. "Hello, I'm Sasajima Ritsu. I'm nineteen years old and have just graduated from the police academy. I still have much to learn from my seniors, so I look forward to working with you."

"Whoa, that genius actually ended up in our unit? We're lucky!"

"Ah, youth… look at that flawless skin, I'm jealous."

"Hayasaka, stop eating and introduce yourself to your superior!"

The young woman at the door hurriedly stood up, wiping her mouth with tissues. Stammering nervously, she said, "H-hello, I'm Hayasaka Yuna, twenty-two years old. N-nice to meet you."

'Do I really look that intimidating?' Ritsu wondered.

He briefly sized her up. She had a cute, innocent appearance, with long grape-purple hair that stood out in the office, and dark gray eyes reflecting his image. Clearly, as he was observing her, she was doing the same.

Megure narrowed his eyes helplessly. "Make sure you learn properly from Sasajima, got it?"

"Yes, sir!"

Ritsu had just been about to say a few words to his subordinate when the phone on Hayasaka's desk rang.

"Aren't you going to answer that?" he prompted.

"Oh!"

Realizing it was her phone, Hayasaka quickly picked it up. As she listened, her expression changed drastically. After hanging up, she turned to Ritsu with a serious look.

"Inspector Sasajima, we've got a case!"

He hadn't even had time to find his desk, let alone sit down.

Ritsu hadn't expected his first case as a detective to come so quickly. He immediately put his suit jacket back on and headed out, asking as he walked, "Do we have details?"

"The scene is on the mountain road along Mount Takao in Hachioji. Two victims, both found dead inside a car. Other details are still unclear."

"Alright. Notify the local police station to arrange for forensics and a medical examiner," Ritsu said, pausing as he took out the keys to the car he had purchased just ten days ago. "Also have officers clear the area and set up a perimeter. I don't want the scene contaminated."

"Yes, sir!"

"Drive your own car," Ritsu added, realizing his only had two seats.

"Ah, right! Got it!"

At the police department parking lot, the sleek silver-gray supercar parked in spot 07 was Ritsu's.

A McLaren F1 LM (1994).

Two detectives were standing nearby, admiring the car. Ritsu walked straight up, opened the door, and said calmly, "Excuse me, I need to head out on a case."

"O-oh, of course!"

A luxury car suited a handsome man perfectly.

Ritsu drove off in the eye-catching supercar, speeding through the streets toward Hachioji in western Tokyo.

----

08:32 AM.

The roar of a supercar engine echoed along the mountain road of Mount Takao. The officers who had already cleared the crowd turned to look east in confusion, only to see a silver-gray car streaking toward them like lightning.

With a sharp drift, it came to a stop less than three meters from them.

Stepping out was a tall, striking young man. His icy blue eyes carried a cold intensity as he walked toward them with a serious expression.

The officers couldn't help but think.

'Is this young, wealthy-looking guy a relative of the victims? He doesn't look like someone with teenage children…'

"Sir, are you related to the victims, Yumitani Masako and Yumitani Shiro?"

Ritsu calmly took out his badge. "I'm the officer in charge of this case, Sasajima."

'Wait, this wealthy, handsome guy is a cop? And that rank… Inspector?!'

He's way too young.

Ritsu paid no mind to their thoughts. Looking around and not seeing a medical examiner in a lab coat, he asked, "The examiner hasn't arrived yet?"

"N-no… not yet."

"Then tell him not to come."

Ritsu pulled out a pair of white rubber gloves, lifted the police tape, and walked toward the white Toyota V30 to begin a preliminary examination of the bodies.

He disliked people who had no sense of time. If the examiner "didn't feel like coming," then there was no need for him to come at all.
