The group moved through the district, deeper into the quiet side sector Pix had identified.
The hustle of Neon Veil felt miles away, muffled by the narrow alleys and dim light. The ambient hum of the city was distant here, barely a whisper.
Elric stayed close to Elen. Her footsteps were light, but there was a subtle hesitation in her movements, a fragility that hadn't been there before.
She had recovered physically, but mentally?
He wasn't sure.
Mii was beside him, talking animatedly to Pix about something or other, but Elric didn't hear it. His attention was on Elen. She was walking with the group, but there was a distance in her eyes, a kind of stillness that made it feel like she was still in the fight.
"…Elen?" Elric asked softly, his voice cutting through the ambient noise of their footsteps.
She looked at him.
The gaze was steady, but it felt like she was seeing him and yet… not quite.
Like her mind was somewhere else.
Somewhere deeper.
"…Are you okay?" he asked again, this time more gently.
For a moment,
she didn't answer.
Then,
she nodded. "…I will be."
There was something in her tone, a hesitancy, that made Elric feel like he couldn't take it at face value.
"…What do you mean by that?" he asked, voice lowering.
She didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she turned her gaze forward, her eyes focused on nothing in particular, and spoke quietly.
"…When the system took over… I could feel it. Like I wasn't me anymore."
Elric frowned, his steps slowing. "But you're back now."
"…Am I?" she whispered, so quietly that Elric almost didn't hear her.
The question hung in the air, unanswered.
Elric stopped walking, turning slightly to face her fully.
"You are back," he said, his voice firm but not harsh.
"You're standing here. You're free."
She met his gaze, and for a brief moment, he saw something there, a flicker of doubt, fear, or maybe both.
"…Do you really think so?" Elen asked, her voice tight. "Do you think I'm just going to… move on from everything I've done?"
The words hit harder than he expected, and Elric's chest tightened. He had seen her fight the control, the internal battle that had waged inside of her.
But he hadn't seen her struggle with the weight of what she had been made to do.
"Elen," he began softly, "I don't care about what's happened. What matters is what you do now. What matters is that you're here, with us."
Her gaze softened, just a little.
"…I don't know if I can just forget it," she said, her voice barely a whisper.
Elric took a step closer.
"…You don't have to forget it. But you don't have to carry it alone either." He reached out, placing a hand gently on her shoulder. "We've got you."
She looked at his hand for a long moment, then up at his face. For a second, she almost seemed to lean into the touch, but the moment passed quickly. She pulled away slightly, taking a breath.
"…I'm not sure how to let go," she admitted.
Elric's heart thudded heavily in his chest. The air between them felt thicker now, heavier. This wasn't just about fighting anymore. It was about them her figuring out how to heal from what she had been through.
"…you don't have to figure it all out at once," he said, his voice steady. "You have time."
Elen looked at him, her eyes searching his face, like she was looking for something something real.
"…Thank you," she said, almost too quietly.
Elric smiled gently, his hand still on her shoulder. "You don't have to thank me. We're in this together."
Her lips parted as if she was going to say something more, but she stopped herself, a strange, fleeting expression passing across her face. She nodded instead.
They stood there for a moment longer just the two of them, standing in the quiet of the district.
The world outside seemed to stop for just a second.
Pix's voice broke through the quiet.
"HEH, you guys have had your cute moment now, right? 'Cause we've got stuff to do, and I don't plan on carrying you all through it." Her grin was wide and obnoxious, but there was a sharpness to her tone.
Elen blinked, almost startled, before she straightened and looked away from Elric. "…Right."
Elric chuckled lightly, stepping back and offering a small shrug. "Guess we better get moving then."
Pix rolled her eyes dramatically. "Finally."
Mii nudged Elric with her elbow. "That was cute, though. But you might want to actually carry her next time. You know, for dramatic effect."
Elric raised an eyebrow at her. "You're impossible."
Mii grinned, looking pleased with herself. "I know."
The group continued down the alley, a little more at ease than they had been before. But in the back of Elric's mind, he couldn't shake the thought of how close Elen had come to losing herself again. And how much more there was to figure out.
As they moved through the dimly lit streets, something shifted in the air something heavier, something unseen. But Elric pushed it down for now. They needed to focus on getting Elen and the others to safety, figuring out what came next.
For now, though, he allowed himself a quiet moment.
With her.
