The tunnel didn't feel safe.
It just felt… less exposed.
Water dripped somewhere in the dark.
Slow.
Uneven.
The air was colder here, thick with rust and something metallic that clung to the back of the throat.
Elric stepped over a loose cable, boots scraping lightly against the concrete.
"…Okay," he muttered. "…next time, we pick a date spot with fewer explosions."
Pix walked ahead, kicking a loose panel as she went.
"Disagree," she said. "Explosions add flavor."
Mii stayed close this time.
Not clinging.
But close enough that their shoulders brushed every few steps.
"…Next time," she said, "we at least start with food."
Elric nodded.
"…Yeah. That part I support."
Kaida-9 stopped near a junction, scanning both directions.
"…This location is temporary."
Lyra stepped past her, already analyzing the structure.
"Everything is temporary."
Sera's voice came from behind, quiet but sharp.
"…We weren't followed directly."
A pause.
"…But that doesn't mean we weren't tracked."
Elen walked beside Elric.
As always.
Silent.
Present.
"…You feel it too," she said softly.
Elric blinked.
"…Feel what?"
She didn't answer immediately.
Her gaze shifted slightly upward.
"…Attention."
That word lingered.
Elric frowned.
"…Yeah," he muttered. "…I was hoping that was just paranoia."
Pix suddenly stopped.
Mid-step.
"…Wait."
Everyone froze.
Lyra's voice dropped instantly.
"…What."
Pix crouched beside a rusted wall panel, brushing dust away with her sleeve.
"…This shouldn't be active."
Elric stepped closer.
"…What is it?"
She tapped the surface lightly.
A faint glow flickered beneath.
Barely visible.
"…Signal residue," she said.
"…Recent."
Kaida-9 moved closer.
"…Define 'recent.'"
Pix tilted her head.
"…Like… minutes ago recent."
Silence.
Mii's voice dropped.
"…We just got here."
Sera's eyes narrowed.
"…No."
A beat.
"…Something else was already here."
Lyra's expression hardened.
"…Or someone."
Elric looked around.
The tunnel hadn't changed.
Same dripping water.
Same broken walls.
Same silence.
But now...
It felt different.
"…Okay," he said quietly.
"…that's not great."
Pix stood slowly.
Her usual grin?
Gone.
Replaced with focus.
"…It's not just one signal," she said.
Lyra turned sharply.
"…Explain."
Pix pointed upward.
Through layers of concrete and metal.
"…There's traffic," she said.
"…A lot of it."
Sera stepped forward slightly.
"…Not random."
Pix nodded.
"…No."
A beat.
"…Structured."
Kaida-9's voice dropped.
"…Organized surveillance."
Mii wrapped her arms around herself slightly.
"…That sounds worse than drones."
Elric exhaled.
"…So we're being watched."
Pix shook her head slowly.
"…No."
A pause.
"…We're being tracked."
Silence settled hard.
Lyra's jaw tightened.
"…How many?"
Pix hesitated.
Then...
"…More than one."
That landed heavier than anything else.
Elric rubbed the back of his neck.
"…Alright," he said.
"…that's officially a problem."
Sera's voice came low.
"…It's escalating faster than expected."
Kaida-9 adjusted her stance.
"…We must relocate."
Lyra didn't move.
Didn't speak.
Her eyes were fixed on the faint glow in the wall.
Something in her expression.
Shifted.
Elric noticed.
Of course he did.
"…You recognize that," he said.
She didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
Pix looked between them.
"…Oh."
Mii blinked.
"…Wait... what?"
Sera's gaze sharpened.
"…Lyra."
Sera's gaze sharpened.
"…Lyra."
A long pause.
Then...
Finally...
"…Yes," Lyra said.
Quiet.
Controlled.
"…I do."
The tunnel felt smaller.
Tighter.
Elric tilted his head slightly.
"…Wanna share with the class?"
Lyra exhaled slowly.
"…We're not just being hunted," she said.
A beat.
"…We're being claimed."
Silence.
Somewhere above...
A faint hum passed through the structure.
Not loud.
Not obvious.
But there.
Watching.
