Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Ceil

The trio stepped onto the main path leading into Ceil town. The town lights glowed warm and steady under the two jagged moons. Rusted metal huts mixed with wooden buildings and neon signs buzzing softly over market stalls now closed for the night. Smoke rose from chimneys carrying the smell of spiced food and safety. People walked openly without weapons drawn. Laughter drifted from a distant bar. No immediate threats. No Mark. Just quiet night life in a border settlement nestled between the wild ruins and safer zones.

‎Saint exhaled long and slow. He stayed close between Sheriff and Shed. "I cannot believe we made it here," he said quietly. "After the dungeon and that forest chase I thought we would never stop running."

‎Sheriff scanned every shadow with his red eye. His duster swayed with each heavy step. "Ceil is a good pause kid. But do not get too comfortable. Towns like this have ears everywhere."

‎Shed kept his bone knife ready at his side yellow eyes flicking left and right. "Yeah Saint. Breathe easy for now. My scales are still sore from that golem. You feeling better after those herbs?"

‎Saint rubbed the spot on his cheek where the shadowy girl had brushed her fingers. "I am. The tingle from her touch is gone but her words keep replaying. Running from the wrong monster. Stronger than you think. Pathetic runaway. How did she know about my mom?"

‎They passed the first row of huts. A few locals nodded politely but kept their distance. Sheriff pointed toward a two story building with a flickering sign that read The Rusty Anchor. "Looks safe enough," he said voice low. "Innkeeper might have information on the Director or Marks movements. We rest here tonight. No arguments."

‎Shed hissed in agreement. "Good choice tin man. My scales are still sore from that golem fight. Saint needs real sleep not moss and herbs."

‎They pushed open the heavy wooden door. Warm light spilled out along with the smell of stew and ale. The common room was half full with travelers and locals talking in hushed tones. A fire crackled in a stone hearth. The innkeeper a burly man with a scarred face and one mechanical arm looked up from behind the counter. "New arrivals," he grunted eyeing their battered clothes and weapons. "Rooms are ten enzo each. Meals extra. No trouble or you are out."

‎Sheriff dropped a handful of coins on the counter. "Three rooms. One night. And whatever stew you have hot."

‎The innkeeper counted the coins nodded and handed over three keys. "Up the stairs last door on the right for the big one. The other two are across the hall. Eat first if you want."

‎They took a table in the corner away from the crowd. Bowls of thick stew arrived steaming with chunks of unknown meat and glowing vegetables. Saint ate slowly savoring the warmth. "This tastes better than anything back home," he said between bites. "After everything we went through I almost forgot what hot food feels like."

‎Sheriff poked at his bowl with a metal finger not eating but pretending for the sake of blending in. "Eat up kid. You need the strength. That girl in the forest. She knew things about you. About your mom. About the portal. How is that possible."

‎Saint leaned in. "Exactly. She said I have fire. That I am stronger than I think. Then she called me pathetic. Like she has been watching me since I jumped through the portal."

‎Shed tore into his portion with sharp teeth hissing in satisfaction. "Could be a glitch in the dimension. Or something the Director sent. Those electric bursts when I chased the right shadow felt like portal tech. We watch our backs. Veyra pulls in all kinds but she teleported. Not many can do that without a tear."

‎Saint nodded eyes wide with confusion. "What if she is on our side? Or what if she works for the Director? That masked guy in the hologram. He seemed to know exactly who I was. Why would someone like him care about a random kid who just fell through a portal?"

‎Sheriff tilted his head red eye flickering. "Your guess is as good as mine kid. That hologram was no accident. He called you boy like he had been waiting. We need a plan. Ceil is safe for now but we cannot hide forever."

‎Shed wiped his mouth with the back of his claw. "Let them come. We are in Ceil now. Crowds mean cover. We can lose them here easier than in the open. Tomorrow we gather more info. Maps. Rumors. Anything on the Zach Clan or the Directors labs."

‎They finished eating and headed upstairs. The rooms were small but clean with narrow beds and a single window overlooking the quiet street. Saint took the middle room. Before they split he paused in the hall. "Thanks guys. For everything. I would be dead ten times over without you."

‎Sheriff placed a heavy metal hand on his shoulder. "We got your back kid. Sleep. Tomorrow we talk more and plan."

‎Shed nodded. "Rest Saint. We figure this out together. No more running blind."

‎Saint collapsed onto the bed fully clothed. The mattress was lumpy but it felt like heaven. Sleep came fast heavy and dreamless for the first time in days.

‎He woke to sunlight filtering through the window. The two moons had set and Veyras strange sun cast a pale orange light over Ceil. Saint sat up stretching. His body felt rested. The bruises were gone. He joined Sheriff and Shed in the common room where breakfast of bread and glowing fruit waited.

‎Sheriff was already there red eye scanning the room. "Town is calm this morning," he said. "But I heard whispers at the bar last night. Marks crew was spotted on the outer roads yesterday. They are looking for a kid matching your description. Director put out a quiet bounty. Alive preferred."

‎Saints stomach twisted. "So they are still coming. What do we do Sheriff?"

‎Sheriff leaned forward. "We stay low. Use the crowds. Gather intel today. If Mark shows we run smart not scared."

‎Shed shrugged. "Let them come. My claws are ready. But first we eat. Saint you look better. Those herbs really work huh."

‎Saint managed a small smile. "Yeah. I feel almost normal. For the first time since the portal. But that girl last night. Others in the bar were whispering about a teleporting girl with electricity. You think it is the same one?"

‎Sheriff glitched slightly. "Matches the mirror I shot. Electric girl. We add her to the list of unknowns. Could be ally. Could be trap. We stay alert."

‎They spent the morning exploring the town talking as they walked. Ceil was bigger than it looked at night. Market stalls opened selling everything from scrap weapons to glowing herbs to small mechanical trinkets that hummed with faint energy. People bartered in low voices keeping one eye on the streets.

‎At one stall an old reptile woman eyed Shed. "You smell like Goodwill Clan exile," she hissed softly. "Weak one."

‎Shed tensed but nodded. "Good. Weak ones last longer here right?"

‎The woman smiled. "Smart boy. Take this map of safer routes out of town. Cheap enzo. And watch for Zach Clan scouts. Director worshippers. Stay clear."

‎Saint whispered to Sheriff as they walked away. "She knew Sheds clan. Everyone here knows something. How do we trust anyone?"

‎Sheriff kept his voice low. "We do not. We listen. We watch. We decide together. That is how we survive."

‎They found a quiet corner in a small park with floating benches. Saint sat watching the townspeople go about their lives. "This place feels almost normal," he said. "Kids laughing. People trading. Like a market back in Belgrade before everything went wrong. But it is not home. None of this is."

‎Shed sharpened his bone knife on a stone. "Home is what we make now kid. With us. Not that abusive mom or whatever waits out there."

‎Sheriff stood guard red eye dim. "We need a real plan. Ceil is safe for now but the Director is clearly after you. We cannot hide forever. Maybe we find a way to hit back. Or find more about that electric girl."

‎A commotion erupted down the street. Two of Marks goons on hover bikes slowed near the market edge scanning faces. One pointed toward the park.

‎Saint ducked behind a bench heart racing. "They are here. What now Sheriff?"

‎Sheriff pulled them into an alley fast. "Stay low. Do not run yet. They will pass. We slip back to the inn after. Keep talking quiet. Act normal if anyone looks."

‎The goons passed by without spotting them but the message was clear. Mark had not given up.

‎They slipped back to the Rusty Anchor as the sun began to set. The innkeeper gave them a knowing look. "Trouble followed you in," he said quietly. "Keep your heads down. I do not want my place smashed."

‎That night they ate again in the common room. Saint listened to the conversations around him. "Rumors about the Director building a new lab in the floating towers," a man at the next table whispered. "Stories of portals opening randomly pulling in more Earth people. And that girl who can teleport with electricity. Seen her twice near the ruins."

‎Saint froze. "That is her. The same one from the forest."

‎He told the others in low voices. "She is real. Others have seen her too."

‎Sheriff glitched slightly. "Electric girl. We add her to the list of unknowns. Tomorrow we ask around more. Carefully."

‎Shed nodded. "Ceil has eyes and ears everywhere. We use that. Gather more info. Rest tonight. We are safe for one more night at least."

‎Saint lay in bed later staring at the ceiling. The town outside was peaceful with soft laughter and distant music. "You guys awake?" he called softly through the thin wall.

‎Sheriff answered from his room. "Yeah kid. What is on your mind."

‎"I just wanted to say thanks again. For everything. I would be dead without you two. This world is crazy but having you makes it feel less impossible."

‎Shed hissed from the other side. "We got you Saint. Always. Sleep now. Tomorrow we talk more and plan our next move. No more running alone."

‎Sleep came slower this time but it came. The peaceful town held them safe for one more night while the dimension turned and the Director watched from his masked throne far away.

‎The road ahead twisted like the vines of Veyra itself full of new horrors and hidden hopes. Saint wiped the last traces of fear from his mind and kept breathing. He had run from one monster back home only to find a world full of them. But with Sheriff and Shed at his side he was no longer running alone.

‎Ceil slept under the stars and the trio slept with it ready for whatever came next.
