The drive home was quiet. Inside, Lucien's presence filled the room like a storm.
"You think standing there politely makes you untouchable?" he asked, low and deliberate.
Amara met his eyes, pulse racing, hands trembling slightly. But she swallowed every flicker of panic.
"You want a reaction?" she whispered.
"Yes. One small sign that I matter. That this… matters to you."
Every humiliation, expectation, threat, every whisper of control pressed down. Yet she held it.
"I am trying to survive, nothing more, not for you, or for anyone but for myself, she murmured to herself but he could hear her.
Lucien's hand fell to his side. Fury, fascination and confusion flickered across his eyes. No triumph, no trembling nor vulnerability.
He walked upstairs without uttering a word anymore not looking back.
Later that day, she stood by the window, overlooking the city lights. She hadn't broken, she hadn't faltered but inside, the weight of the day pressed against her.
I survived again…she took a deep breath as she crossed her arms around her chest, tears almost falling from her eyes.
For the first time, a thought slid through her mind like fire, "Maybe I am not just trying to survive maybe I am learning to live through this" she closed her eyes at the thought of this and let out a small breath.
Maybe not consciously, nor strategically. Just absorbing.
Picking up knowledge she never thought she could handle. Understanding subtleties in a world that once terrified her.
She opened her eyes and her heart beat a little faster, a strange mix of fear and anticipation.
Downstairs, Lucien poured himself a drink, pacing.
She hadn't trembled. She hadn't protested. She had absorbed, observed… and subtly influenced outcomes he hadn't noticed.
The worst part?
He didn't know if he should be furious, impressed, or intrigued.
But then, Sophia's words echoed in his mind, "You're creating a student you didn't intend to."
And that triggered something in him again tonight, more than before.
He wanted her reaction. He wanted control. He would push harder. But tonight… he waited.
Because impatience could be dangerous.
And the fire she carried… the calm she wielded… he had no idea how to extinguish it. Not yet!
Amara woke to silence that pressed against her like a weight. Not peaceful, not comforting but just a reminder that in this house, every breath was observed, every movement calculated.
She dressed with deliberate precision, hair pinned back, clothes neat, and hands steady.
Survival had become more than instinct; it was discipline, awareness, and quiet mastery over herself.
Breakfast was ritual. Lucien sat at the head of the long table, fingers tapping lightly against the polished wood.
His gaze tracked her, silent, calculating. She met it evenly, as if nothing could disturb her calm.
Today, she was not just surviving, she was learning, observing and absorbing the world around her.
We will be attending another boardroom meeting this morning, Lucien finally spoke after intense gazing at each other.
But, I thought my duty was just to be your wife and I understood the fact that you wanted to break me and ridicule me In front of your board members at the last board meeting, when you suddenly sent your driver to bring me, but this, today is what I don't understand. She asked calmly.
Lucien didn't even bother looking up from his food , I don't quite get your point? What is it you're trying to say, you may want to make your point clear and stop beating around the bush if you want an answer from me.
She took it all in calmly and took a silent deep breath, I am not sure it is my duty as your contract wife, to be attending your board room meetings, my duty is to be a wife, not an employee or whatever you think this is. She said, her voice almost betraying her calmness at the end.
Lucien could notice the crack in her voice at the end, and that gives him so much happiness.
"whatever you think, this is, is exactly what this is, contract wife", he stood up as he replied her and walked upstairs, get ready and meet me here in ten minutes!
She sat down there for few minutes as she watched him disappeared upstairs, she fight the tears coming to her eyes, as adjusted her clothes and went upstairs to go get ready.
