Chapter 19 - A Fragile Alliance

Trust wasn't given, it was being forced in the seconds between life and death and Jasper had just made his move. Gunfire cracked through the canyon, violently but Jasper didn't slow down. He moved straight into danger, he didn't think too yet hesitation got people killed.

The two fleeing survivors stumbled forward with panic breaking their coordination and behind them three armed hunters advanced with terrifying precision and he cut left using rock formations as cover and then the first hunter raised his weapon too slow and just then Jasper was already inside the line.

He slammed into the shooter redirecting the weapon and the shot fired wide and after a second later the man dropped. From behind cover, Stacy's group saw it clearly that this was skill and there was no panic in him. The remaining hunters reacted instantly, flanking as one moved high ground and the other circled wide.

"Coordinated," someone in the group muttered.

"Too coordinated."

"Engage." Stacy said

And without any hesitation or debate they did.

If they didn't act now, they'd all be targets.

The group opened fire with controlled bursts and strategic pressure. They knew how to fight, as Jasper adapts, he shifted position reading their rhythm, and synchronizing without communication as if he'd fought with them before side by side. One hunter dropped under combined fire and the last one retreated. He threw something before disappearing behind rock cover.

"Down!" Jasper shouted

He lunged, grabbing one of the survivors and dragging them behind cover.

There was a massive explosion as blast tore through the narrow path with rocks shattering and dust swallowing everything. And then nothing else was seen just the stillness of th environment with dust everywhere and ringing ears.

"Everyone check!"

Voices cut through the haze.

One by one as responses came.

"I'm good!" One said

"Alive!" And another

"Injured but moving!"

Stacy's voice was steady now

"Jasper?" She called out

As he approached alive with his eyes still scanning with much alertness he remained unshaken.

"Clear for now," he said.

The two rescued survivors dropped to their knees very exhausted still terrified but grateful because even rescue didn't mean safety anymore. They lowered their weapons as eyes shifted between them. Now haven realized that Jasper acted and didn't betray them it meant everything to them, everything felt different all of a sudden with something undeniable. The man who questioned him earlier when he joined the group had a different tone now.

"You could've walked away." He said

Jasper looked at him briefly.

"I didn't."

My name is Stanley but you can call me Stan he said.

"Jasper" as the two men shook hands.

Stacy saw through clearly more than the others and then Stan because she knew what that choice cost. In this world helping others wasn't survival but risk.

"Thank you…" one of them said weakly.

"They've been hunting us for hours…"

Jasper's eyes narrowed slightly.

"How many?"

The survivor hesitated.

"…More than three."

The group exchanged looks because that wasn't a small problem it was a moving danger.

"We can't stay here," someone said.

"They'll regroup."

"They'll track us." Another did

"They'll come back." Stan said

As silence fell they already knew that it wasn't about one fight but about what came next.

"We move together." Stacy concluded

"No." Someone from the group opposed

"We don't expand risk." Stan said

"They'll slow us down and they'll expose us."

As Jasper watched he did not interfer or tried leading because he felt it was their decision. And just as Stacy holds her ground she told everyone

"They're already part of this."

"If we leave them, we create enemies."

"If we take them, we control the outcome." She said.

Half of the group agreed and half didn't and as tension rose again in a different manner all eyes shifted to Jasper again.

"What do you think?" Stan asked

"They're already tracking movement," he said.

"If we split now, we're weaker but if we stay together, we control the direction."

Then there was a moment of silence.

"But numbers only work if everyone can move." He concluded.

The group looked at the survivors who joined them, they were feeble and shaking.

"So decide fast because they won't wait." Jasper added.

A long second passed and then Stacy spoke.

"They come with us."

Stan man nodded slowly but added:

"Then he leads."

As he pointed at Jasper who was now given a risky responsibility under such circumstances filled with pressure. Leader or Liability they thought as all eyes were on him now. Jasper's response came in very cold and direct

"I don't lead." He said

After a few seconds he said.

"I survive."

Because right now that's exactly what they needed and as the group adjusted with a new structure and spacing. Jasper moved forward not officially leading but clearly guiding. As they disappeared deeper into the broken terrain, one truth settled over all of them, they weren't a team or united. They were just surviving in the same direction.

High above them there was an unseen distant figure who watched through a scoped lens, tracking, studying and waiting and a quiet voice spoke into a device:

"Multiple targets confirmed."

After few seconds he said

"Send the rest."

And as Jasper unknowingly led them forward the fragile alliance had already been marked…for elimination.
