I stayed there quietly beside Salvatore, my hand still resting in his while the breeze moved softly around us. For the first time in a long while, my chest did not feel painfully tight.
It was heavy, yes, but not unbearable. That was when I heard the sound of a car driving into the compound. My attention shifted toward the entrance slowly, and a few seconds later, I saw Gianna and Matteo stepping out of the car together.
I watched them quietly.
Their fingers were intertwined naturally, and Gianna was laughing about something while Matteo looked at her with that same patient expression he always had around her.
They looked happy, comfortable, and safe with each other. Something about the sight made my chest ache softly. I was not jealous exactly, it was just longing. Because for a moment, I found myself wishing things could fully become that easy between Salvatore and me again someday.
