Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Collision of Fates

The forest no longer felt like a place of refuge.

It watched.

It listened.

And now—

It hunted.

Lia moved carefully between the trees, each step slow, deliberate, and uncertain as her body struggled to adjust to its new form.

Her legs trembled beneath her weight.

Unfamiliar.

Unreliable.

Every movement demanded effort—balance she did not yet possess, strength she had not yet built. More than once, her hand brushed against the rough bark of nearby trees just to steady herself.

She was learning.

But not fast enough.

A sharp breath left her lips as she took another step, her foot catching slightly against an uneven root. She stumbled, barely managing to regain her balance before she could fall.

"…Ah…"

Her body felt heavier like this.

Different.

Wrong.

And yet—

She kept moving.

Because she had already made her choice.

"…Akira…"

His name slipped from her lips, softer than the wind that carried it away.

That pull remained.

Stronger now.

Clearer.

It guided her, like an unseen current beneath still water, drawing her forward even when her body resisted.

She didn't understand it.

Didn't question it.

She simply followed.

Then—

She stopped.

A sudden chill crept along her spine.

Her body stiffened instinctively, her breath catching mid-motion as something shifted in the air around her.

The forest changed.

The sounds dimmed.

Even the wind seemed to hesitate.

Lia's brows furrowed as she slowly turned her head, her senses sharpening in a way she could not explain.

This feeling—

It wasn't like Akira.

It wasn't warm.

It wasn't steady.

It was sharp.

Cold.

Invading.

Danger.

Her body reacted instantly.

She stepped back, pressing herself against the trunk of a tree, her breathing lowering as she tried to steady the rising panic within her chest.

Voices.

Faint.

But real.

Getting closer.

Carefully—slowly—she leaned just enough to see beyond the trees.

What she saw made her blood run cold.

Figures moved through the forest.

Armed.

Alert.

Silent in a way that made them more terrifying than if they had been loud.

Hunters.

Her fingers tightened against the bark.

"…No…"

They were too many.

Too organized.

Too focused.

And at the front—

He stood.

Azure.

Even from a distance, his presence commanded the space around him. His movements were precise, his gaze sharp as it swept across the forest with unsettling calm.

He wasn't guessing.

He wasn't wandering.

He was searching.

For her.

Lia's breath became shallow.

"…They're looking for me…"

A flicker of panic surged through her chest.

Her body pressed further into the shadows, her entire being going still as the hunters moved closer.

Closer.

Too close.

"…No… please…"

She had nowhere to go.

No strength to fight.

No way to hide for long.

Her heart pounded.

Loud.

Too loud.

A small shift—

A misstep—

Her foot brushed against a dry branch.

Crack.

The sound was faint.

Barely there.

But in a forest filled with hunters—

It was enough.

Everything stopped.

Then—

A voice cut through the silence.

"Someone's there."

Sharp.

Certain.

Lia's breath froze in her chest.

Another voice followed.

"Spread out."

Footsteps shifted instantly.

Controlled.

Fast.

They were coming.

"…Run…"

The thought hit her like instinct.

And this time—

She didn't hesitate.

She turned—

And ran.

Her movements were uneven, her legs still unfamiliar, still struggling to obey the urgency in her mind.

She stumbled once—

Fell forward—

Caught herself just in time—

And forced herself to keep going.

Behind her—

Voices erupted.

"There!"

"After them!"

The forest broke into chaos.

Footsteps thundered behind her, sharp and relentless as the hunters surged forward.

They didn't know who she was.

Not yet.

But they knew something was there.

And that was enough.

Lia's breathing grew ragged, her chest tightening with every step as she pushed her body beyond its limits.

Pain shot through her legs.

Her balance faltered again.

She nearly fell—

But kept going.

"She's slowing down!"

"Cut her off!"

The words hit her like a blow.

Fear surged through her, sharp and suffocating.

They knew.

They could see it.

Her weakness.

She pushed harder.

Faster.

Ignoring the burning in her muscles.

Ignoring the instability beneath her feet.

Because stopping—

Meant death.

Far across the forest—

Akira stopped moving.

His head lifted sharply, his entire body going still as his senses flared.

Something was wrong.

The forest—

It had changed.

No longer calm.

No longer quiet.

It was alive.

Tense.

Restless.

His instincts sharpened instantly.

Hunters.

His jaw tightened.

But beneath that—

There was something else.

Faint.

But unmistakable.

"…Lia…"

The realization struck him immediately.

Without thinking, he moved.

Fast.

His body shifted mid-motion, bones adjusting, muscles tightening as he slipped into his half-wolf form.

The world changed.

Sharper.

Clearer.

Scents flooded his senses.

The forest spoke—

And he listened.

And there—

He found her.

His eyes narrowed.

"…That's not possible…"

Her scent—

It wasn't near the cave.

It was far.

Too far.

"How did she even—"

The thought cut short.

Because something worse followed.

She was moving.

And worse—

She was heading toward the pack.

Akira's expression darkened instantly.

"If that's really her…"

Then this—

Was a disaster waiting to happen.

Because if the pack reached her first—

There would be no hesitation.

No understanding.

Only instinct.

And instinct—

Killed.

Akira surged forward, his speed increasing as he tore through the forest, his focus locking completely onto her scent.

He needed to reach her first.

Had to.

Or everything—

Would fall apart.

Lia's strength was failing.

Her legs trembled violently beneath her as she ran, her steps becoming slower, less controlled.

Her breath burned in her chest.

Her vision blurred.

She stumbled.

Hard.

Her body hit the ground, pain shooting through her as the impact knocked the air from her lungs.

For a moment—

She couldn't move.

Couldn't breathe.

Footsteps.

Closer.

Too close.

Panic surged violently.

"No…!"

She pushed herself up, her arms shaking as she forced her body to respond.

Her legs resisted—

Then moved.

Run.

Just run.

Branches tore against her skin.

The forest blurred past her.

Her balance faltered again—

But she kept going.

Because behind her—

Death was chasing her.

And ahead—

She had nothing.

Nothing—

Except that pull.

"…Akira…"

The distance between them closed.

One running for her life.

One racing against time.

And between them—

Fate tightened its grip.

If you were Lia, would you keep running… or risk turning back and hiding?

And if you were Akira, what would you choose first—your pack… or Lia?
