Chapter 28 - Chapter 27: The Emperor’s Iron Grip

The air in the province was thick with the scent of ozone and the heavy hum of the steam engine, but the peace Cheng had built was fracturing. The Imperial Envoy, Lady Xin, had not left; instead, she had settled into the estate like a lingering fever, her eyes constantly tracking Cheng's movements.

"Lord Cheng," she said, leaning against the doorway of the forge with a sharp, calculating smile. "The Emperor is not a man of patience. He has heard that your 'toys' can turn iron into gold and water into power. He doesn't just want the blueprints anymore. He wants the creator."

Heng turned in his arms, his eyes wide and trusting. "I'm not afraid of the shadows, Cheng. I'm only afraid of the silence if you're gone."

Cheng's hands roamed over Heng's body through his silk robes, mapping the curves of his spine and the heat of his skin with a worshipful, erotic focus that promised a much deeper reclamation soon. The friction of their bodies and the scent of sandalwood and rain created a thick atmosphere of desire that left them both breathless but wanting more
