Chapter 68 - Chapter 68: The Tip of the Spear

Chapter 68: The Tip of the Spear

The salt spray from the churning sea below felt cold against their faces, a stark contrast to the fire of their resolve. On the cliff's edge, the Tower of Heaven stood as a jagged black tooth against the moonlit sky, its malevolent purple aura a poison in the air.

Erza turned from the dreadful sight to face her friends, her expression a mask of hardened steel.

"This is as far as you go," she stated, her voice leaving no room for argument. "Jellal is expecting me. He is expecting a lone, broken woman coming to atone for her past. That is the bait he has laid, and that is the bait he will get. If he senses any of you, the entire plan is compromised before it begins."

"No way!" Natsu instantly exploded, flames licking at his fists. "We're not letting you go in there alone! That's the whole reason we came!"

"Natsu, stop!" Lucy grabbed his arm, her knuckles white. "This is different. This isn't just charging in. This is Erza's plan."

"It's a stupid plan!" he shot back, rounding on Erza. "What if they grab you? What if we can't get to you in time?"

"You will," Erza said, her gaze locking with his. The certainty in her voice was absolute. She stepped forward, placing a hand on his shoulder, and the fire in his eyes faltered under the weight of her trust. "I am not going there to die, Natsu. I am going there to draw their attention. I am the tip of the spear. But the spear is useless without the strength of the shaft behind it. That is all of you."

She looked at him, a flicker of the old Erza, their Erza, shining through. "I promise you, Natsu. There will be a fight. And when it happens, I will need you. I'm counting on you. Can you trust me until then?"

Natsu stared at her, his jaw tight. The war between his protective instinct and his faith in her raged in his eyes. Finally, with a low growl of frustration, he relented. "...Fine. But if you get a single scratch on you before we get there, I'm blowing the whole tower down."

"That's fair," she agreed with a faint smile.

Erza turned to the small, floating form of Mew. They exchanged a look of perfect understanding. Mew nodded, then turned to the others. A soft, pinkish-white light, visible only to them, began to glow from its body. It enveloped Natsu, Lucy, Gray, Gajeel, Juvia, and Happy, and one by one, they simply... vanished. They were not gone, but hidden, tucked away in a place beyond sight and magical detection, their presences completely erased from the world.

Now truly alone, Erza turned back to the tower. The fear was still there, a cold knot in her stomach, but it was no longer in control. It was fuel. She was no longer a fugitive from her past, but a hunter.

Her solitary march across the long, stone causeway was the longest walk of her life. With every step, the oppressive hum of the R-System grew louder, a physical weight pressing down on her. The grand, arched doors of the tower loomed before her, sealed and silent. She didn't need to knock. They knew she was here.

With a deep groan of grinding stone, the doors slid open, revealing a dark, torch-lit corridor. And standing there, waiting for her, were not guards or monsters.

It was them.

Sho, his hair longer, dressed in ornate robes. Wally, his blocky body now augmented with strange mechanical parts. And Millianna, bouncing on her feet with a terrifyingly cheerful grin, a binding tube in her hands.

"Erza! You came back!" Millianna chirped, her voice echoing with manic joy. "We missed you so, so much!"

"Traitor," Sho spat, his eyes filled with a cold, brainwashed resentment that cut Erza deeper than any blade. "You abandoned us for your new 'friends'. You abandoned paradise."

"But Lord Jellal is merciful," Wally added, his voice a monotone rumble. "He's willing to forgive you. He's saved a special place for you in the ceremony."

Erza's heart shattered. The friends she had come to save, the faces that had haunted her dreams for years, were looking at her with the eyes of strangers. They were not her jailers. They were her welcoming committee, ready to drag her to the altar themselves.
