Chapter 60: The New Specimens
Psychic Log: Cycle 7, Day 3. Observer: Mew. Location: Temporary Nesting Site (Designation: "Tavern").
My internal chronometer has calibrated to this planet's rotational cycle. The dominant species, "humans," measure this in "days." By their count, it has been several days since the conclusion of the "Phantom Lord" territorial dispute. The primary nest (Designation: "Guild Hall") is undergoing reconstruction, funded by an anonymous influx of currency from the "Heartfilia Nest," an entity now reclassified from "Hostile" to "Benefactor" following Specimen Lucy's successful emotional data transfer.
My current focus is on the two new specimens integrated into the primary colony. Their assimilation provides a wealth of fascinating behavioral data.
Specimen 1: "Gajeel." Aura Signature: Abrasive, sharp, tastes of rust and unresolved loneliness. Classification: Specimen Iron.
Specimen Iron's integration is... suboptimal. He attempts to project an aura of "menace," but it is a brittle shell. Beneath it, I sense a core of profound isolation, like a single, vibrating gear in an otherwise empty clock. His attempts to socialize are fascinatingly clumsy.
Currently, he is seated at the bar, attempting to consume a standard guild-issued beverage from a metallic tankard. My psychic senses detect his dissatisfaction with the liquid sustenance. His jaw works, and there is a low grinding sound. Mirajane (Classification: "Specimen Deceptively Sweet Demon"), whose auditory sensors are remarkably acute, turns from cleaning a glass.
"Is the ale not to your liking, Gajeel?" she asks, her smile a perfect, serene curve. Her aura, however, contains a mischievous undercurrent I have learned to associate with impending social experiments.
"Gihi. It's fine," Gajeel grunts, but his gaze lingers on the tankard itself. He seems to be calculating its tensile strength versus the enjoyment of consumption.
"Nonsense," Mira says, her smile widening. "You look like a man who appreciates a... richer diet." She places a bowl of steaming stew in front of him. "My special, iron-rich stew. Just for you."
Specimen Iron eyes the stew with suspicion, then tentatively takes a bite. His eyes widen almost imperceptibly. My sensors detect a spike in his pleasure receptors. The flavor profile is complex: savory broth, tender vegetables, and... nails? Yes, the stew contains actual, thoroughly cleaned and cooked iron nails. He loves it.
"It's... adequate," he growls, shoving another spoonful into his mouth with aggressive speed. Mira just giggles. A successful integration protocol.
Specimen 2: "Juvia." Aura Signature: A constant, high-pressure deluge of heart-shaped water droplets. Target: Specimen Gray. Classification: Specimen Water.
Specimen Water's integration is focused with a singular, almost alarming intensity. Her entire being is a monument to her affection for Specimen Gray (Classification: "Specimen Ice/Specimen Missing-Shirt"). She has been tracking him for two days. Her attempts at stealth are, from a tactical standpoint, catastrophic. She hides behind objects significantly smaller than her own body mass. Her aura precedes her like a weather front.
Today, she has initiated a "Gift-Giving Protocol." The offering is a hand-knitted scarf, deep blue in color. A logical gift, if the local climate were arctic. It is, however, the middle of a warm spring.
Specimen Ice is lounging at a table, blissfully unaware. Or so it appears. I can sense his aura shift. A subtle prickle of "impending moisture" registers on his psychic periphery. He has learned to detect her specific brand of atmospheric disturbance.
Juvia approaches, her face flushed, the scarf held out like a holy relic. "Gray-sama!" she begins. "For you! Juvia made it so you will never be cold!"
Gray's reaction is instantaneous, a pre-programmed reflex. "Whoa! Is it just me or is there a sudden heatwave?!" he shouts to no one in particular. In one fluid motion, he rips off his shirt and slams his palms on the ground. "Ice-Make: WALL!"
A massive, glistening wall of ice erupts between them. Juvia stands on one side, heartbroken, clutching a now slightly damp scarf. Gray stands on the other, shivering violently. "Phew," he chatters, rubbing his bare arms. "Much better. Almost got a heatstroke there."
Specimen Water's personal raincloud begins to form above her head. Data suggests this protocol was also suboptimal.
Experiment Log: Behavioral Adjustment.
The colony's energy levels are high. Specimen Natsu (Classification: "Specimen Dragonfire") is boasting loudly about the superiority of his flames. "My fire can do anything! It's the tastiest fire in the world!"
An intriguing, testable hypothesis.
I focus a minuscule portion of my psychic energy on his primary gustatory nerve cluster. The goal: to create a cross-sensory association. The trigger: the act of producing fire. The induced sensation: the flavor of "perfectly grilled sea bass."
Natsu takes a deep breath. "Check this out!" He spews a plume of brilliant orange flame. He freezes mid-spew. His eyes go wide. He smacks his lips.
"Whoa..." he whispers, a look of profound confusion and delight on his face. "It's... fishy."
Happy (Classification: "Specimen Flying Cat") looks at him, tilting his head. "What's fishy, Natsu?"
"My fire!" Natsu says, his excitement growing. He breathes another, smaller puff of flame and licks his lips enthusiastically. "It's delicious! Here, Happy, try some!" He aims a tiny flame toward the cat.
Happy shrieks and dives under the table. "Natsu, you've finally lost it! You can't eat fire!"
"But it's SO GOOD!" Natsu insists, breathing fire into his own cupped hands and trying to lap it up like a bowl of soup, burning his tongue in the process and hopping around in pain.
The surrounding guild members stare in stunned silence before breaking into uproarious laughter.
My analysis concludes: the colony's ecosystem has become significantly more entertaining. Data acquisition is proceeding at an optimal rate. This nest is good.
