Chapter 44: The Thaw of a Frozen Heart

Ultear's POV: A Summons from the Light

The voice cut through the shadows, through the layers of her shock, and pinned her in place. It was not a question. It was a summons.

Every instinct screamed at her to flee, but her feet were leaden, anchored to the stone floor. Her carefully constructed world was already in ruins; what was one more step into the rubble? With a shuddering breath that felt like inhaling glass, Ultear stepped out of the darkness and into the sliver of moonlight illuminating the upper gallery.

Down below, Erza's eyes widened. "Ultear? What are you doing here?"

Gray and Lyon looked up, confused by the arrival of the Council member. But Ultear ignored them all. Her entire world had narrowed to the space where her mother's spirit had vanished. "Bring her back," she commanded, her voice trembling but laced with the authority she had wielded for years. "You… creature… bring her back now."

The Dusknoir turned its single, glowing eye toward her.

As it spoke, the creature raised its hand once more. The gentle, blue light seeped from the air, coalescing again into the shimmering, translucent form of Ur.

Ur's POV: The Ghost of a Ghost

Her spirit was fading. The truth had been spoken to her boys. The love had been conveyed. A gentle peace was settling over her, the final, quiet pull of oblivion. It was time to rest.

But the creature held her back. It directed her attention upward. She turned, expecting to see another of Gray's friends, another soul to thank for watching over her son.

Instead, she saw a ghost.

Her own.

A young woman stood in the moonlight, her face a mirror of Ur's own, but younger, sharper, and etched with a pain so deep it was a physical presence. The dark hair, the shape of the eyes, the curve of the jaw… it was impossible. It was the face she had only seen in her dreams for over twenty years.

Ur's spirit violently flickered, nearly dissipating from the sheer force of the shock. The connection to the minds of those below faltered, filled with a psychic scream of pure, unadulterated disbelief.

her voice was a frantic, broken whisper in their minds.

This was not the calm, ethereal master. This was a mother seeing the impossible, her spirit thrown into absolute turmoil.

Ultear's POV: The First Crack in the Ice

Ultear stared, her own fury momentarily forgotten, replaced by confusion. This wasn't the reaction of a woman who had abandoned her child. This was the raw, unfiltered shock of a mother seeing a ghost. The story she had been fed her entire life, the story of a mother who chose new sons over her own daughter, began to feel thin and brittle.

But a lifetime of pain was a powerful current. "A trick?" she finally choked out, her voice dripping with the bitterness she had cultivated for years. "Was it a trick when you left me in that hell? When you replaced me with them? Why?! Why did you throw me away?!"

The accusation, filled with so much genuine pain, cut through Ur's shock. Her spirit stabilized, focusing on her daughter's words. The pieces began to click into place, forming a picture of a tragedy far greater than she had ever imagined.

Ur's voice was no longer calm; it was a desperate, frantic cry that echoed in their souls.

Ur's spirit drifted up to the gallery, her form flickering with the intensity of her grief and rage.

The truth slammed into Ultear with the force of a physical blow. The Bureau. Hades. They hadn't just experimented on her. They had built her entire life, her entire motivation, on a mountain of lies. They had stolen her from her mother and stolen her mother from her, twisting their love into a weapon of mutual destruction.

She collapsed to her knees, a keening wail of pure, undiluted agony echoing through the temple. It was the sound of a soul breaking. The sound of a little girl crying for a mother she had hated, while that same mother had been crying for her all along.

Ur's spirit knelt before her, reaching out with a hand that could offer no touch. she whispered, her own form weeping ethereal tears.

As the shared truth settled between them, Ur's form began to fade rapidly, her purpose fulfilled, her energy spent.

"No, wait!" Ultear cried, reaching for the dissolving spirit. "You just came back! Don't leave me again! Please!"

The Dusknoir floated between them.

"Isn't there anything you can do?!" Gray shouted from below, his heart breaking for the mother and daughter who had only just found each other.

The Dusknoir's eye turned to him, then back to the weeping Ultear and the fading spirit of Ur.

Mew's voice resonated.

Ur's fading spirit looked at her weeping daughter, her form barely visible.

A flicker of fierce, maternal light flared in Ur's fading soul.

her voice resonated with a strength that defied her dissipating form.

The Dusknoir nodded. It raised its hands, and a swirling vortex of deep purple Ghost energy erupted, enveloping the last shimmering light of Ur's soul. The two energies collided, and the air grew intensely cold.

The vortex condensed, solidifying into an elegant, feminine shape, a flowing kimono-like body made of pure, white ice. Two horn-like appendages of ice formed on its head, and its hollow arms were attached to the sides of its head. Its eyes opened, glowing with a soft, ethereal yellow light, filled with a familiar, maternal intelligence.

The transformation was complete. The Froslass floated silently in the air. It turned its head, its new eyes fixing on the weeping woman still kneeling on the floor. Slowly, silently, Ur, in her new form, floated towards her daughter, a mother reborn, ready to finally comfort her lost child.

(A/N: Later i realized that Mew could have transformed into Ho-Oh and used it's power to resurrect Ur but at that point it was already to late if I were to change that now, I would have to change later arcs as well)
