Chapter 9 - The secret we keep

Aduni sat at the corner of the room, watching the scene unfold before her. The dinner party had shifted from a celebration of Abel's birthday to something much more tense and complicated.

Suzan was still on one knee, her expression one of fury masked with a calm that was almost too perfect. "You can't marry me because you're not ready?" she asked, her voice low but cutting. "That's the excuse you'll give me after everything we've been through? After I've been carrying your child for months?"

Aduni's eyes widened. A child?

Abel's face mirrored the shock in her own. His mouth opened, then closed again, as if trying to piece together the sudden chaos. "What? A child? I… I didn't know"

Suzan, her face twisted in a mixture of anger and pain, stood up, staring him down. "Of course you didn't know, Abel. You were too busy chasing after work every single time while I was left alone. But now that I'm pregnant, now you want to act surprised?" Her words were sharp, venomous. "Well, I won't let you off that easily. You're going to own up to your responsibility."

The air around them shifted, and Aduni found herself intrigued, more than anything else. She couldn't deny it the drama, the unpredictability of it all was captivating.

Suzan had always been confident, but this was next level. Aduni wondered how deep the anger ran, how much she was willing to risk to force Abel into this marriage.

As the tension escalated, Abel's friends, including Tade, pulled him aside, their voices low and urgent. "You need to fix this, Abel," one of them said.

"Think about your reputation. Everyone's watching. You can't just walk away from this. It's not just about you anymore. You have to consider the kid."

Abel stood frozen for a moment, caught in the whirlwind of his own choices. "I didn't know," he muttered. "I didn't know she was pregnant. This changes everything."

Tade and the others tried to calm him down. "Look, it's not ideal, but you need to step up. Show some responsibility. Apologize to the guests, make it right, and then you can handle the situation with Suzan privately. Just don't make this worse."

Aduni sat in the background, enjoying every moment of the unfolding drama. She found herself wondering what made Suzan go so straight for the jugular. Was this calculated, or was this desperation? Either way, it was a spectacle.

After a tense break, Abel returned to the dining area, his face a mixture of guilt and confusion. He stood before the guests, who were all watching him closely. A heavy silence settled over the room.

"I... I apologize for the scene earlier," Abel began, his voice wavering slightly. "But I owe everyone here the truth. I love Suzan. I've loved her for years. I've chased after her, fought for her, and I thought we were in the right place. But I'm shocked by everything that's come to light tonight. I never knew about the baby. And now... now I'm not sure what to do."

He paused, gathering his thoughts before continuing, the weight of the moment settling in his words.

"But what I do know is this, I want Suzan in my life. I want her as my wife, the mother of my children. I've made mistakes. I know that. But I am willing to take responsibility for my actions, for the child. I'll make it right. I'll stand by her, and I will do whatever it takes to make this work."

The room was silent, the tension hanging in the air, before people began to clap, a hesitant but appreciative response. Suzan, her expression softening, finally smiled, a fragile peace settling over her.

The evening continued, but it wasn't the same. Abel had managed to regain some of the trust in the room, but the damage had been done.

The night ended on a bittersweet note, a quiet celebration of what was, and what could have been.

Aduni walked to her car, her thoughts swirling.

She couldn't hold it in any longer. As soon as she locked the car, she burst into laughter the kind of laugh that came from deep within, from a place of exhaustion mixed with relief. The absurdity of it all, the complexity, the mess it was almost too much to bear, and yet, she couldn't help but laugh.

Tade, who had been walking toward his own car, caught sight of her. His smile flickered as he stopped in his tracks, watching her laugh. "What's so funny?"

Aduni didn't explain herself, just smiled at him as she slid into the driver's seat. "Nothing. Just… life."

Tade raised an eyebrow but said nothing more, merely giving her a wave before walking off.

Aduni drove off, the laughter still bubbling in her chest, but it wasn't all humor. There was something else too, something that felt like the last breath before the storm.

The week ended. It was Saturday again, and as Aduni made her way through the weekend, she couldn't help but think of how quickly everything was changing. She had plans to relax, to take a breather from everything, but the universe had other plans.

Her phone buzzed, an unfamiliar number flashing on the screen. She hesitated before rejecting the call, wondering who it was. The number called again. And again.

By the third time, curiosity won over. She answered.

"Hello?"

The voice on the other end was unfamiliar, but polite. "Hi, is this Aduni?"

"Yes, who's this?"

"This is Eniola, your brother Gbenga's wife. I was wondering if I could visit you?"

Aduni's mind raced. Eniola? She had heard little about her brother's wife, and frankly, she hadn't thought much about her. The timing felt odd, but she agreed to the visit, curious despite herself. She sent her address, and soon enough, Eniola arrived.

"Hi, Aduni," Eniola said with a smile, though it didn't reach her eyes. She was dressed modestly, her posture tense but composed.

The two exchanged pleasantries, but there was a heaviness in the air, a sense of something unspoken.

Aduni couldn't help but ask. "What brings you here, Eniola?"

"Oh, just a complementary visit," Eniola replied, her words light, but there was an edge to them.

As the evening went on, Eniola showed no signs of leaving, and Aduni grew more suspicious. It wasn't until much later, when night had fully descended, that Eniola finally spoke her truth.

"I need to stay here for a week," she said quietly, her words carrying a weight that Aduni couldn't ignore.

Aduni raised an eyebrow, her sarcasm creeping in. "Oh? Unannounced stays now? You know, I'm really flattered."

Eniola flushed, clearly embarrassed. "I didn't want to burden you, but… my marriage is in a bad place. Gbenga is a womanizer. He's been seeing other women, and it's been killing me. I lost a pregnancy because of one of his mistresses."

Aduni felt the world tilt for a second.

Gbenga? A womanizer? Her brother, the one who had always seemed so put together?

Eniola continued, her voice shaky but determined. "My two kids are in boarding school here in Lagos. And once I save up enough money, I'm leaving. We're leaving the country. I can't live this way anymore."

Aduni stood there, stunned by the confession. This was what had been going on in the background of her family? This was what she hadn't seen?

The night stretched on, the quiet between them hanging heavy, and Aduni realized that nothing was as it seemed, not with her family, not with Suzan, and definitely not with herself.

It was all a game of appearances, and everyone had their secrets.
