Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: The Princess’s Poisoned Invitation

The morning after the Gala, Eldoria was a hive of whispers. The downfall of Colonel Vane had been swifter and more brutal than any execution. By sunrise, the "Hero of the Border" had been stripped of his rank, his lands, and his dignity, thrown into the Black Tower to await a trial that everyone knew would end in a noose.

But Kaelen wasn't interested in the fallen. He was interested in the one who had watched the entire spectacle from the Royal Box without blinking an eye.

Kaelen stood on his balcony, watching the Royal carriage pull up to the guest wing. It wasn't the Chancellor's carriage this time. It was white and gold, emblazoned with the crest of the Third Princess, Seraphina.

In his first life, Seraphina had been his fiancée. She was a woman of icy intellect and unmatched magical talent. She hadn't betrayed him out of malice or emotion; she had done it because his "low talent" made him a political liability. To her, Kaelen had been a broken tool that needed to be discarded.

"Kaelen." Elara stepped onto the balcony, her black dress rustling. She looked at the carriage below. "She's here. The woman you told me about."

"She isn't here herself, Elara," Kaelen said, his voice a low, cold hum. "She's far too careful for that. She sent her chief lady-in-waiting. It's an invitation. A test."

"Are we going?"

"Of course," Kaelen smiled, turning to look at Leo, who was sitting in the corner of the room, staring at a single ray of sunlight with vacant eyes. "And we're taking our 'Hero' with us. Seraphina loves a good tragedy. It makes her feel superior."

The Princess's private estate was a fortress of elegance, located in the "Silver District" where the air was enchanted to smell like eternal spring. As the carriage brought them to the front steps, Kaelen felt the heavy weight of high-level detection wards passing over his skin.

They were led into a glass-walled conservatory. Exotic flowers that bloomed only in moonlight lined the paths. At the center, sitting at a small marble table, was Princess Seraphina. Her silver hair was braided with pearls, and her blue eyes were as sharp as diamonds.

She didn't stand. She simply watched them approach, her gaze lingering on the limp in Kaelen's walk and the empty stare in Leo's eyes.

"Kaelen of Oakhaven," she said, her voice like wind through ice. "The man who returned from the dead to humiliate my best Colonel."

Kaelen bowed deeply, leaning heavily on his raven-topped cane. "Your Highness. I didn't come to humiliate anyone. I only brought the truth. The Empire deserves to know who truly protects its borders."

"The truth is a dangerous weapon, Kaelen," Seraphina said, gesturing for them to sit. "Usually, those who wield it find themselves cut by it sooner or later."

She looked at Leo, then back at Kaelen. "I remember you. Years ago, at the Academy. You were... unremarkable. A sidekick to the great Leo. How did a man with so little mana survive a massacre that claimed an entire battalion?"

[System Notification: Skill Trigger - 'Silver Tongue of the Damned'.]

[Effect: Credible Deception.]

"Fear is a powerful motivator, Princess," Kaelen said, his voice trembling with just enough "emotion" to be believable. "When the Shadow-Stalkers tore into our camp, I didn't fight. I hid. I crawled through the blood of my friends. I am not a hero. I am a coward who lived while better men died."

Seraphina leaned back, her eyes narrowing. She valued honesty, or at least the appearance of it. By admitting "cowardice," Kaelen was disarming her suspicion.

"And Leo?" she asked. "The High Healers say his soul is... gone. They say it was burned out by a 'Holy Overload'."

"He tried to save the Great Tree," Kaelen said, looking down at his hands. "He touched the core. The light was too much for any mortal to bear. He gave his mind to save a village that burned anyway."

[System Notification: Target 'Seraphina' is experiencing 'Calculated Skepticism'.]

[Despair Points Harvested: 150]

"It's a pity," Seraphina murmured. "A hero who cannot speak is a hero who cannot be used. But you... you seem quite capable of speaking. The people are already calling you the 'Voice of the Fallen'. They say you are the only one who truly understands the threat of the Abyss."

She leaned forward, her diamonds catching the light. "The Emperor is old, Kaelen. He fears the dark. My brothers are busy bickering over land. I need someone who knows the shadows. I need an advisor who isn't afraid to tell me the 'coward's' truth."

Kaelen felt the trap snapping shut. She didn't want to help him. She wanted to own him. She wanted to use his public popularity to bolster her own claim to the throne.

"I am a simple man, Princess," Kaelen said softly. "I only want to ensure that Leo is cared for and that the victims of Oakhaven are remembered."

"I can offer you both," she said. "And more. I can give you the resources of the Imperial Library. I can give you a seat at the War Council. All I ask is your total... loyalty."

[System Notification: NEW QUEST - 'The Princess's Puppet'.]

[Objective: Accept Seraphina's offer and infiltrate the Inner Circle.]

[Reward: Tier 3 Shop Unlock, 5,000 XP.]

"It would be an honor to serve you, Your Highness," Kaelen said, bowing his head so she couldn't see the dark grin spreading across his face.

Late that night, in the library of Seraphina's estate, Kaelen stood before a massive shelf of ancient grimoires. Elara was with him, her eyes scanning the room for guards.

"She's going to use us," Elara whispered. "She doesn't care about Leo. She just wants the 'Hero's Shadow' to stand behind her throne."

"I know," Kaelen said, pulling a book from the shelf. "That's why I'm going to give her exactly what she wants. I'm going to make her so powerful that she becomes the only target the other Princes see. And then, when they attack her, I'll be the one to pull the rug out from under her feet."

He looked at his status screen. System. Unlock Tier 3.

[System Notification: 10,000 Points Deducted. Tier 3 Unlocked.]

[New Feature: 'Soul-Bound Possession'.]

[New Feature: 'Despair Domain - The Hollow Kingdom'.]

Kaelen's eyes flared purple. He reached into the empty air, and a small, pulsing black orb appeared in his hand. This was the [Abyssal Seed: Tier 3].

"Elara," Kaelen said, his voice dropping to a gravelly, demonic pitch. "Tonight, the Princess thinks she gained an advisor. Tomorrow, she will realize she has invited a plague into her house."

He walked to a carafe of wine sitting on the Princess's desk—the wine she drank every night before sleep. He dropped the black orb into the liquid. It dissolved instantly, leaving no trace, no scent, no magical residue.

"What does that do?" Elara asked, her voice trembling.

"It doesn't kill," Kaelen said. "It dreams. Every night she sleeps, she will experience a different version of her own death. She will see her empire crumble. She will see her brothers betray her. And every morning, she will wake up and find that I am the only person she can trust to keep those 'dreams' from coming true."

He turned back to the window, looking out at the Imperial Palace.

"The harvest in Oakhaven was small, Elara. This... this is a feast. We are going to harvest an entire Dynasty."

Suddenly, a sound came from the shadows of the library. A soft, rhythmic clicking.

Kaelen spun around, his hand glowing with purple fire.

Out of the darkness stepped a man in a grey hooded robe. He didn't look like a guard. He looked like a scholar, but his eyes were entirely black—no iris, no pupil.

"The Despair Architect," the man said, his voice sounding like a thousand whispers layered on top of each other. "The System didn't mention you would be this... efficient."

Kaelen froze. "Who are you? How do you know about the System?"

The man smiled, revealing teeth like jagged glass. "I am a 'Collector'. And you, Kaelen, are the most interesting 'Player' we've seen in three centuries. Don't mind me. I'm just here to watch the show."

The man vanished into smoke before Kaelen could strike.

[System Notification: UNKNOWN ENTITY DETECTED.]

[Warning: You are being observed by 'The Administrators'.]

[Difficulty Spike: 'Hard Mode' Initiated.]

Kaelen looked at the spot where the man had stood. His grip on his cane tightened.

"Administrators?" Kaelen whispered. "It doesn't matter. Whether it's the Empire, the Princess, or the gods themselves... I will harvest them all."
