Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 — The Brother Who Watches

The night had long settled over Ravencourt.

But not all lights were out.

From the upper floors of the estate—

Behind a half-open window—

A pair of eyes remained fixed on the courtyard below.

Kaelan Ravencourt.

Silent.

Still.

Watching.

Below—

Torches flickered against stone.

Shadows danced with every movement.

And at the center of it—

Aleron.

He moved with intent.

Sharp.

Calculated.

But across from him—

Their father stood unmoved.

Unshaken.

Kaelan's gaze narrowed slightly.

"…He's improved."

The clash below continued.

Aleron attacked.

Adapted.

Adjusted.

Faster than before.

Smarter than before.

Yet—

Still not enough.

Kaelan watched as their father countered effortlessly.

Every movement precise.

Every response immediate.

Then—

That moment.

Aleron found an opening.

A clean strike landed.

Kaelan's eyes sharpened.

"…Oh?"

That wasn't luck.

That was reading intent.

But just as quickly—

It ended.

Aleron was forced down.

Pinned.

Overpowered.

Silence followed.

Kaelan exhaled slowly.

"…Still far."

But his gaze didn't leave.

Because what mattered wasn't the result.

It was everything before it.

"…He didn't hesitate."

No fear.

No doubt.

Even knowing the gap between them—

Aleron stepped forward anyway.

Again.

And again.

"…And he's thinking while fighting."

Not reacting.

Understanding.

Learning mid-battle.

Kaelan leaned slightly against the window frame.

"…Politics. Observation. Adaptation."

A quiet pause.

"…And now he's seeking strength."

His eyes softened—

Just slightly.

"…You've changed, Aleron."

For years—

Aleron had remained distant from the core of power.

Watching.

Learning.

But never stepping forward like this.

Until now.

Kaelan closed his eyes briefly.

"…If it's him…"

Silence lingered.

Then—

"…Ravencourt might actually survive what's coming."

That thought alone—

Was not small.

Because Kaelan knew something most did not.

This land—

Was not stable.

Not strong.

Not ready.

And their father—

Despite his strength—

Could not hold it forever.

Kaelan opened his eyes again.

Below—

Aleron had already left the courtyard.

"…He's walking the same path now."

A faint smile appeared.

"…Good."

The Next Morning

The training grounds were quiet.

Aleron arrived early.

As expected.

The air was cold.

Still.

"…You're on time."

A voice came from behind.

Aleron turned.

Kaelan stood there.

Relaxed.

Composed.

Not in formal attire.

But dressed for combat.

Aleron's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…You?"

Kaelan stepped forward.

"…Father is busy."

A pause.

"So I'll be training you."

Silence.

Aleron studied him carefully.

"…Why?"

A simple question.

But not a light one.

Kaelan didn't answer immediately.

Instead—

He walked past him.

"…Because you're lacking."

Aleron didn't react.

"…And because…"

Kaelan stopped.

Turning slightly.

"…you're the only one who seems to understand that."

Silence.

"…You want to lead."

"…But right now?"

Kaelan's gaze sharpened.

"You'd lose to anyone who doesn't think twice."

Aleron smirked slightly.

"…Then teach me."

A brief pause.

Then—

Kaelan smiled.

"…Good answer."

Training Begins

"No weapons."

Aleron raised an eyebrow.

"…You're serious."

"Completely."

Kaelan stepped forward.

"Your problem isn't technique."

"It's foundation."

Before Aleron could respond—

Kaelan moved.

Fast.

A strike—

Clean.

Direct—

Aleron barely reacted in time—

Impact.

He staggered back.

"…Too slow."

No pause.

Another attack.

Aleron tried to counter—

Failed.

"…You're thinking too much."

Another hit.

"…And your body can't keep up with your mind."

Aleron steadied himself.

Breathing controlled.

Then—

He stepped forward again.

This time—

Different.

More grounded.

More focused.

Kaelan noticed.

"…Better."

Their movements clashed again.

This time—

Aleron didn't rush.

Didn't force.

He observed.

Adapted.

And for the first time—

He didn't lose immediately.

Kaelan smiled.

"…Now we're getting somewhere."

Later

The sun had begun to rise.

Both stood across from each other.

Breathing heavier now.

"…Again," Kaelan said.

Aleron didn't complain.

Didn't hesitate.

He stepped forward.

Again.

From a distance—

Albert watched quietly.

"…The second son trains."

"…And the first acknowledges."

A faint smile formed.

"…Ravencourt is changing."

Elsewhere

Far beyond their land—

A carriage moved silently along a distant road.

Inside—

A man sat calmly.

Eyes closed.

Waiting.

"…Ravencourt."

A faint smile.

"…Let's see if you're worth my time."

Darien has begun his journey.
