Chapter 271: The Treasure Regigigas Gave Him

"How do I snap it back to its senses quickly, then?"

Mammon mulled over how to bring Regigigas back to a clear head fast, given its current state of blind, unreasoning fury. Sending in Regirock and the others clearly wasn't realistic — they'd probably end up half-paralyzed from a single Hyper Beam. Thinking it over, well — a good beatdown first seemed like the way to go after all.

Right then, Regigigas on the ground stirred again, the seven round holes on its chest flaring wildly with light once more. Its arms twitched and swung in jerky, mechanical bursts, a series of clattering clack-clack sounds ringing out, jagged shards of stone materializing before it — Rock-type Stone Edge!

With a powerful swing of both arms, Stone Edge launched forward, streaking toward Mega Mewtwo Y at high speed.

"Dodge it."

Mega Mewtwo Y's expression stayed perfectly cool as its now much-smaller body dissolved into black light, vanishing from the spot instantly.

"Dark Void— no, wait, Nasty Plot— actually—" Let me start over.

Reappearing, Mega Mewtwo Y materialized directly behind Regigigas.

"Dark Void—" No, that's not right either.

Mega Mewtwo Y raised its right arm, purplish-black energy crackling and coalescing rapidly above its palm, swelling in an instant into a massive sphere of pure destructive force.

Dark-type Dark Terminus Nova! Dark Mewtwo's signature move.

Sensing something wrong behind it, Regigigas spun around fast, both arms flaring white, swinging down at Mega Mewtwo Y — Fighting-type Hammer Arm!

Mega Mewtwo Y hurled the Dark Terminus Nova straight at Regigigas.

BOOM!

Hammer Arm slammed hard into the Dark Terminus Nova, trying to halt its advance — but even with Regigigas throwing everything it had into stopping the attack's push forward, it simply couldn't. Dark Terminus Nova was just too heavy, grinding forward bit by bit regardless. Regigigas let out mechanical groan after groan, but nothing it did could stop it — Hammer Arm broke, and the Dark Terminus Nova slammed squarely into Regigigas's body.

KA-BOOM!

A violent surge of purple-black energy erupted skyward, the entire landscape shuddering, a tangible shockwave rippling outward. Even Caitlin's group, positioned some distance away, felt the fierce gust of wind slam into their faces. Cynthia immediately had her Garchomp shield Poacher J from the blast — the last thing that woman needed, having only just started healing, was to take fresh injury from this.

"That's some serious power," Mammon said, mounted on Reshiram, watching from above with real satisfaction.

The ground where Regigigas stood had sunk into a substantial crater, the Dark Terminus Nova's aftershock rippling across the surrounding terrain, tearing up a whole layer of topsoil. Clearly, that single strike had carried absurd force behind it. And Mega Mewtwo Y hadn't even gone all-out yet!

Mega Evolution really had pushed Dark Mewtwo's power to an entirely new level — much like the difference between Mega Rayquaza and ordinary Rayquaza, practically two different species of Pokémon entirely.

"Reggi."

Down in the crater, Regigigas braced itself up with one arm — visible wounds across its body made clear it had taken real damage from that hit. Still, its presence had settled considerably, nowhere near as volatile as before. Regigigas rose to its feet, gazing up at Mega Mewtwo Y in the sky with clear confusion. It could sense some trace of Mew's presence within Mega Mewtwo Y, yet something about it ran fundamentally, substantially different.

"Looks like you've come back to your senses, Regigigas."

Mammon patted Reshiram, signaling it to move closer, addressing Regigigas directly.

Regigigas glanced at Reshiram and Mammon, then looked around at the surrounding devastation, a flicker of genuine shame crossing through it. With the fury that had consumed its mind now settling, it began to recall exactly what it had just done.

"No need to feel bad about it. This isn't really your fault — as long as you're back to normal now, that's what matters," Mammon reassured Regigigas. After all, none of this was really Regigigas's doing — if anyone deserved blame, it was that woman, Poacher J.

"Though your temple's been destroyed now. So where will you go from here?" Mammon asked.

Snowpoint Temple had indeed collapsed amid Regigigas's rampage — well, considering the indiscriminate barrage of Hyper Beams it had been firing off, that was hardly surprising. Take a couple more direct hits, and even a temple with that much history behind it simply couldn't hold up.

Regigigas looked at the collapsed temple, falling into deeper silence.

"If you don't have anywhere in mind, why not come along with me for now? You've been asleep a good long while — probably time to get out and stretch your legs a bit," Mammon offered, seizing the opening. Sure, Regigigas's raw strength wasn't quite top-tier overall, but once Slow Start wore off, its close-combat capability could reasonably be called top-tier legendary caliber. Worth a try, no harm in it.

Regigigas looked at Mammon again — it could sense the presence of the pillars it had once crafted, lingering on him. Wait a moment — something's off.

"The pillars on you — those belong to Mew's set?" A low, mechanical, puzzled telepathic voice reached Mammon's ears.

Regigigas hadn't actually crafted that many pillars in total, after all — making them required energy crystals, materials it had to go hunt down itself, and Regigigas wasn't exactly the type to have endless free time for that. It had made two of the rock-type kind, but only a single Regidrago and a single Regieleki. Regidrago especially — as far as Regigigas was concerned, that one barely counted as finished. It had run out of dragon-crystal material halfway through shaping it, which was why Regidrago basically amounted to just a head — its "body" had never actually gotten made at all.

"That's right — I caught them at the Tree of Beginning."

"And Mew — didn't say anything?" After a pause, Regigigas found it hard to keep a straight face, so to speak.

The whole reason it had crafted those three pillars in the first place was to protect the Tree, sparing Mew the trouble of dealing with minor threats itself. Not that Regigigas thought Mew stood any real chance against Mammon — this human clearly carried an absurd number of legendaries on him already. But hauling Regirock and its siblings off to hide inside the Tree should still have worked, given the Tree's mechanism automatically expelled any human who tried to enter. This human shouldn't have been able to get in at all.

But then Regigigas reconsidered — Mammon himself not entering didn't matter, if his Pokémon could get in just fine on their own. Regigigas suddenly understood — it had misjudged Mew after all.

"No, actually — Mew and I worked it out together. I bought up the whole area around the Tree and posted guards around the perimeter, so I ended up catching Regirock and the others properly," Mammon said, smiling.

Regigigas fell silent, then let the matter go. Expecting that little brat Mew to properly guard the three pillars it had left behind really had just been wishful thinking on its own part.

"Honestly, Mew did seem to genuinely care about them. When I first arrived at the Tree, it actually came out specifically to try to stop me from catching them," Mammon added, feeling he ought to put in a good word for Mew.

Regigigas said nothing in response.

Seeing Regigigas's reaction, Mammon figured this recruitment was probably a lost cause.

"Regigigas, what do you think? I'd genuinely love for you to join us."

Mammon shifted the topic.

"Human, even without my help, you're already among the very top-tier existences among humanity," Regigigas said, its telepathy carrying a note of genuine wistfulness. "And this body of mine wouldn't be able to offer you much real help, besides."

Regigigas knew its own limitations well enough — before every battle, it needed to "start up" its body first, or it simply couldn't unleash the full extent of its power. Which was, unmistakably, Regigigas's polite, roundabout way of declining.

"Still — it was you, human, who stopped me. Otherwise, I likely would have caused far greater destruction. If you ever need my help going forward, I'll come to assist you," Regigigas said, evidently the earnest, straightforward type, speaking to Mammon with real sincerity.

"Understood. Thank you," Mammon said, a touch disappointed.

"But this place is no longer suitable for you to keep sleeping in, Regigigas — this location's been exposed now," Mammon said. Even setting aside the ruined state of Snowpoint Temple, today's commotion had been far too visible; plenty of people would surely come investigate afterward.

"Why not head over to the Tree of Beginning instead? I imagine Mew would welcome you warmly," Mammon suggested. "I could get you there — it wouldn't take long."

The seven dots on Regigigas's front flickered uncertainly, as if it were mulling the offer over. After a long moment's thought, Regigigas nodded.

"All right. I'd appreciate that, human," Regigigas said, offering its thanks.

"No need to thank me. Plenty of my organization's Pokémon are already living at the Tree — having you there as a guardian puts my mind considerably more at ease."

"I'll do my best."

Hearing that, a note of genuine warmth crept into Regigigas's mechanical telepathy — it appreciated humans like Mammon, ones who spoke plainly and honestly.

"Oh, right, human — I have a treasure. Not sure if you'd have any use for it?" Regigigas asked, seeming to recall something.

"A treasure?" Mammon raised an eyebrow. If Regigigas itself considered something worth calling a treasure, it had to be genuinely remarkable.

"This item is quite extraordinary — though it may also bring you some danger."

"Show me."

"Give me a moment."

Seeing Mammon's genuine interest, Regigigas made its way to the ruins of Snowpoint Temple, digging around for a while before finally unearthing something from beneath the ground — a mud-caked, ancient-looking box.

Reshiram landed, and Mammon dismounted, not bothering with the grime, opening the box directly.

A soft lavender glow spilled out immediately. Inside sat a round gemstone, glowing faintly with a delicate pink-violet light, an unmistakable aura of divinity radiating from it.

"This is—"

Mammon stared at the round gem in astonishment. He recognized it immediately. But why would Regigigas have something like this — had it simply found this buried somewhere over the years?

No wonder Regigigas had warned it might bring him danger — if the gem's actual owner ever sensed its presence, they'd likely come rushing over without delay. The thought alone had Mammon quickly closing the box back up.

"Regigigas, I really appreciate this gift. Thank you."

Mammon considered it a moment, then let a slow smile spread across his face, offering Regigigas genuine thanks.

This really was an unexpected windfall.
