Chapter 2 - CHAPTER TWO: The power they tried to erase

The Veil of Ash never slept.

Even in silence, it felt alive—breathing through the cracks in the ground, whispering through the drifting smoke, watching through unseen eyes.

And now… it was watching him.

Kael Varyn walked slowly across the broken land, each step crunching against the dry, lifeless soil. The air was thick, suffocating, filled with the faint scent of something burned long ago and never forgotten.

His body still ached.

Not from injury—but from awakening.

Every part of him felt… different.

Stronger.

Sharper.

Unstable.

He raised his hand slightly, staring at it as faint traces of black-blue energy flickered across his fingers like dying embers.

"This power…" he murmured. "It's still there."

But it wasn't calm.

It pulsed.

Like something alive inside him.

Waiting.

Watching.

Hungry.

Kael clenched his fist, forcing the energy to disappear.

"I need to control it," he said under his breath. "Before it controls me."

A low wind swept past him, carrying distant echoes.

Not voices.

Not quite.

But something close enough to make his skin crawl.

The Veil of Ash was not empty.

It was never empty.

The First Lesson

Kael stopped near a cluster of jagged rocks, their surfaces cracked and blackened as if lightning had struck them a thousand times.

He exhaled slowly.

"Alright…" he whispered. "Let's try again."

He closed his eyes.

Silence.

Then—

He reached inward.

That same endless space responded immediately.

The Void.

It opened to him like a door that had always been unlocked.

Energy surged through his veins.

Darker this time.

Heavier.

His eyes snapped open—

They glowed.

Faint blue… mixed with something deeper. Something darker.

Kael extended his hand.

A small sphere of swirling void energy formed again—but this time, it was more stable. More defined.

"Yes…" he said, a hint of excitement in his voice.

"I can feel it."

The sphere rotated slowly, humming with quiet, terrifying power.

Then—

It began to shake.

Kael's expression tightened. "No… not again—"

The energy burst outward.

A shockwave blasted across the ground, sending ash flying in every direction.

Kael was thrown backward, hitting the ground hard.

"Ugh—!"

He coughed, pushing himself up.

"Still unstable…"

A familiar voice echoed in his mind.

"Because you are forcing it."

Kael froze.

"You again."

The presence was calm.

Unmoving.

"Void is not magic," it said. "It does not obey commands. It responds to understanding."

Kael wiped the ash from his face.

"And what exactly am I supposed to understand?"

A pause.

Then—

"Yourself."

Kael let out a dry laugh.

"That's helpful."

But deep down… he knew the voice was right.

Every time he tried to control the power like magic—it resisted.

Fought back.

Broke free.

Maybe this power didn't need control.

Maybe it needed… connection.

Kael took a deep breath.

"Fine," he said. "Let's do it your way."

He closed his eyes again.

This time—he didn't force it.

He didn't reach.

He simply… listened.

And slowly—

The Void responded.

Not violently.

Not wildly.

But gently.

Like a tide rising in a calm sea.

Kael's eyes opened.

The energy formed again in his palm.

Stable.

Quiet.

Alive.

A small smile appeared on his face.

"Got you."

Hunters in the Ash

A sudden growl cut through the silence.

Kael turned sharply.

From the thick fog ahead, shadows moved.

Not one.

Not two.

Five.

Five beasts emerged slowly, their massive forms dragging across the cracked earth. Their bodies were covered in hardened ash and bone-like plates, their glowing eyes fixed on him.

But something was different this time.

They weren't charging.

They were circling.

Watching.

Waiting.

Kael's expression hardened.

"They're learning…"

These creatures weren't just mindless monsters.

They were adapting.

And that made them dangerous.

One stepped forward.

Larger than the others.

Its body pulsed with faint red cracks, as if something inside it was burning.

A leader.

Kael rolled his shoulders slightly.

"Good," he said quietly.

"Let's test this properly."

The beast roared—and the others attacked.

Fast.

Precise.

Coordinated.

One came from the front.

Two from the sides.

The rest from behind.

Kael moved.

Not with panic.

But with instinct.

He stepped to the side, letting the first beast rush past him.

His hand shot out—

Void energy wrapped around his fingers.

He touched its shoulder.

And—

It vanished.

Gone.

No explosion.

No sound.

Just… erased.

Kael's eyes widened slightly.

"So that's the difference…"

Before he could think further, another beast lunged from the side.

Kael ducked low, spinning as he extended his hand again.

The second creature disappeared mid-air.

Two down.

Three left.

But now—they were faster.

Smarter.

The leader roared again, and the remaining beasts changed strategy.

They didn't attack directly.

They waited.

For an opening.

Kael's breathing slowed.

"Alright…" he muttered. "You want to play smart?"

He raised both hands.

Void energy began to gather—not in one place, but around him.

Like a field.

A presence.

The air distorted.

The ground beneath his feet cracked slightly.

The beasts hesitated.

For the first time…

They felt fear.

Kael stepped forward.

"I'm not trapped here with you," he said quietly.

"You're trapped here with me."

The leader charged.

Kael didn't move.

At the last second—

The beast leapt.

Claws aimed for his chest.

Kael's eyes glowed brighter.

"Erase."

The moment the creature entered the field—

It disappeared.

Like it had never existed.

The remaining two beasts froze.

Then—

They turned and ran.

Kael lowered his hands slowly.

The energy faded.

Silence returned.

He exhaled deeply.

"That…" he said, catching his breath, "felt different."

Stronger.

Controlled.

Efficient.

The voice returned.

"You are beginning to understand."

Kael nodded slightly.

"Yeah…"

He looked at his hands again.

"But I'm still far from mastering this."

A World That Remembers

Far beyond the Veil of Ash…

In the towering city of Arkanis…

A massive chamber lit with golden light trembled slightly.

At the center stood the Crystal of Awakening.

But something was wrong.

It flickered.

Unstable.

Cracks of dark energy appeared briefly across its surface.

The High Magister stepped forward, his expression tense.

"This… shouldn't be happening."

Another elder mage spoke.

"The crystal is reacting to something."

"Something powerful," another added.

The Magister's eyes narrowed.

"No…"

His grip tightened around his staff.

"Not powerful…"

"Forbidden."

A heavy silence filled the room.

Then—

One word.

"Void."

The elders froze.

"That's impossible," one whispered.

"It was erased centuries ago."

"Nothing of it should remain."

The Magister's gaze hardened.

"And yet…"

He turned toward the distant horizon.

"…something has awakened."

The Outcast's Resolve

Back in the wasteland…

Kael stood at the edge of a cliff overlooking a vast expanse of ash and ruin.

The sky above remained gray and endless.

But now—

It didn't feel suffocating.

It felt… like home.

He clenched his fist slowly.

"They cast me out because I was different."

His eyes glowed faintly.

"But this difference…"

He looked out toward the unseen world beyond the Veil.

"…is exactly what will make me unstoppable."

The wind howled louder, as if agreeing.

Kael turned and began walking again.

Deeper into the unknown.

Stronger than before.

Wiser than before.

But still—

Only at the beginning.

Behind him, the ash shifted slightly.

As if something else was watching.

Something far more dangerous than beasts.

Something… ancient.

And interested.
