Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Move-In

The car arrived exactly at eight.

Not a minute early. Not a minute late.

Lena noticed that immediately.

She stood outside her apartment building with a single suitcase beside her, her fingers curled tightly around the handle. The morning air was cool, but she barely felt it.

This was it.

No more thinking.

No more hesitation.

Just… forward.

The driver stepped out, opening the back door without a word.

"Miss Hart," he said politely.

Lena nodded once and got in.

The door closed behind her with a soft, final click.

---

The ride was quiet.

Too quiet.

Lena sat still, her hands resting on her lap as she watched the city pass by through the tinted window. Familiar streets slowly gave way to wider roads, cleaner buildings, quieter surroundings.

Different.

Everything felt different already.

She swallowed lightly and looked away from the window.

Three months.

She repeated it in her head like something solid she could hold onto.

Three months—and then she could walk away.

---

The car slowed.

Then stopped.

Lena looked up.

And for a second—

She forgot to breathe.

The house wasn't just big.

It was… controlled.

A long driveway. Clean lines. Glass and stone blending into something that looked less like a home and more like a statement.

Power.

Always power.

The gates behind them closed silently.

There was no going back now.

---

The door opened.

"Miss Hart," the driver said again.

Lena stepped out slowly, her eyes taking everything in without meaning to. The air even felt different here—quieter, heavier.

She picked up her suitcase, but before she could take a step forward, the front door opened.

A woman stepped out.

Mid-forties, composed, dressed in a way that was simple but precise.

"You must be Miss Hart," she said.

"Yes."

"I'm Mrs. Dalton. I manage the household."

Lena nodded.

"Welcome."

The word sounded polite.

But not warm.

---

Inside, everything was exactly as she expected.

Minimal.

Perfect.

Untouched.

Every surface clean. Every object in place. No space for mistakes.

No space for… her.

---

"This will be your room," Mrs. Dalton said, opening a door.

Lena stepped inside.

It was larger than her entire apartment.

The bed untouched. The wardrobe arranged. The space prepared—before she even arrived.

"He had it ready yesterday," Mrs. Dalton added.

Of course he did.

---

When the door closed behind her, Lena finally exhaled.

She set her suitcase down slowly and looked around.

Nothing here belonged to her.

And yet…

For the next three months—

It had to.

---

A knock came sooner than she expected.

"Miss Hart," a soft voice said. "Mr. Cole is waiting."

Of course he was.

---

The hallway felt longer this time.

Quieter.

Heavier.

Every step forward felt like stepping deeper into something she didn't fully understand.

---

She stopped in front of the office door.

Knocked once.

"Come in."

His voice was calm. Controlled.

Unchanged.

---

Lena stepped inside.

Adrian sat behind the desk, already working, as if nothing in his world had shifted at all.

He looked up briefly.

His gaze moved over her—quick, assessing.

Then he nodded.

"Good."

---

"You're here," he said.

"Yes."

He closed the file in front of him and leaned back slightly.

"For the next three months, this is your home."

Lena held his gaze.

"I understand."

---

A short silence followed.

Then Adrian spoke again.

"There's something you need to prepare for."

Lena's fingers tightened slightly at her side.

"What is it?"

"A dinner," he said.

Simple.

Direct.

But something about the way he said it made her chest tighten.

---

"With who?"

"My associates," he replied. "Close friends. People who will expect to meet my fiance."

The word settled heavily again.

Fiance.

---

"Tonight?" Lena asked.

"Yes."

Of course it was tonight.

Everything here seemed to happen immediately.

No time to think.

No time to adjust.

---

"You'll be introduced properly," Adrian continued. "Which means no mistakes."

His gaze held hers now.

Steady.

Expectant.

---

Lena felt that pressure again.

The same one from the contract.

The same one from the moment she signed.

Only now—

It was real.

---

"What do I need to do?" she asked.

Adrian's expression didn't change.

"Be convincing."

---

That was all.

No instructions.

No guidance.

Just expectation.

---

Lena nodded slowly.

"I'll be ready."

---

As she turned to leave, his voice stopped her.

"Lena."

She paused.

"Don't forget," he said quietly, "they already believe you're my wife to be."

A beat.

"Act like it."

---

Lena stepped out of the office, the door closing softly behind her.

Her heart was beating faster now.

Not from fear alone.

But from the realization of what tonight meant.

---

This wouldn't be practice.

This wouldn't be preparation.

This would be the first time she stepped into that role—

Fully.

Publicly.

Under watchful eyes that wouldn't miss a single mistake.

---

And for the first time since she arrived—

Lena felt it clearly.

Not just pressure.

Not just expectation.

But risk.

---

Because tonight—

She wouldn't just be Lena anymore.

---

She would have to become

Mrs. Cole.
