Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The Thing in the Dark

The forest had never felt this alive before.

Kael ran.

Branches clawed at his skin as he pushed through the dense trees, his breath ragged, heart pounding like it wanted to escape his chest.

He didn't stop.

He couldn't.

Because something was following him.

---

He didn't know how long he had been running.

Minutes.

Maybe hours.

But the moment he left the pack clearing, he felt it again.

That presence.

Cold.

Watching.

Waiting.

---

"Show yourself!" Kael shouted, spinning around.

Silence answered him.

Only the whisper of wind through leaves.

Only the distant howl of wolves—his pack.

Not his anymore.

---

Kael clenched his jaw.

"Fine," he muttered. "Keep hiding."

But deep down, fear crept in.

Because he knew one thing—

It wasn't hiding.

It was playing.

---

A sudden chill swept through the air.

The temperature dropped unnaturally fast.

Kael froze.

His breath turned visible.

And then—

He saw it.

---

The shadows beneath the trees began to stretch.

Not with the moonlight.

Not naturally.

They moved… against it.

---

Kael took a step back.

"No…"

The darkness gathered in one place, twisting, rising—like smoke being pulled into a shape.

A familiar shape.

Too tall.

Too sharp.

Too wrong.

---

It stepped forward.

Not touching the ground.

Floating.

Alive.

---

Kael's voice trembled. "You're… real."

The shadow tilted its head again, the same unnatural curiosity from before.

Then it spoke.

Not with sound.

But directly into his mind.

> "You left me."

Kael's eyes widened. "What?"

> "You abandoned me… and now you pretend you don't know?"

"I didn't leave you!" Kael snapped. "You're my shadow—you're supposed to be part of me!"

For a moment, everything went still.

Then—

The shadow laughed.

A hollow, distorted sound that echoed inside his skull.

> "Part of you?"

It stepped closer.

The air grew heavier.

> "I was you."

---

Kael stumbled backward.

"That's not possible…"

But the truth felt… real.

Too real.

---

Suddenly—

The shadow lunged.

---

Kael barely had time to react.

A force slammed into him, throwing him across the forest floor. Pain exploded through his body as he crashed into a tree.

He gasped, struggling to breathe.

"What… are you…?"

The shadow stood over him now.

Closer than ever.

Its glowing eyes burned into his.

> "I am what they took from you."

---

Kael's mind raced.

"They…? Who?"

No answer.

Instead, the shadow raised its arm—

And for a split second—

It transformed.

---

Claws.

Massive.

Deadly.

Werewolf claws.

---

Kael's eyes widened in horror.

"You can… shift?"

> "I can do everything you cannot."

---

The claw came down.

Fast.

Brutal.

---

Kael rolled to the side just in time, the ground splitting where he had been. He scrambled to his feet, adrenaline surging.

"Why are you attacking me?!"

> "Because only one of us gets to exist."

---

The shadow attacked again.

This time faster.

Stronger.

Relentless.

---

Kael dodged, barely keeping up.

He had no claws.

No fangs.

No wolf.

Nothing.

---

"I can't fight this…" he whispered.

And for the first time—

He realized something terrifying.

This wasn't just his shadow.

---

It was stronger than him.

---

The shadow paused, as if sensing his fear.

Then it spoke again.

> "You are incomplete."

> "Weak."

> "Replaceable."

---

Kael's chest tightened.

The words hit deeper than the attacks.

Because they were true.

---

"Shut up…" he muttered.

> "You don't deserve the Alpha blood."

"I said SHUT UP!"

---

Something snapped inside him.

---

A sudden pulse of energy surged through his body.

For the first time—

Kael felt something.

Not a wolf.

Not exactly.

But something close.

---

The ground beneath his feet cracked.

A faint, dark aura flickered around him.

---

The shadow stopped.

Watching.

Interested.

---

> "So… it's still there."

---

Kael looked at his hands.

They were shaking.

But not from fear anymore.

---

From power.

---

"Maybe I don't need a shadow…" he said, his voice low.

"Maybe…"

He looked up.

Eyes burning with determination.

"…I just need to take it back."

---

The shadow smiled again.

Wider this time.

Almost proud.

---

> "Then come and claim it."

---

And in the darkness of the forest—

The hunt truly began.

---

To be continued… 🔥
