Chapter 4 - The Exam

Tkos Van Gold, the bastard of the Van Gold family. His father is a Monarch, but his mother was a commoner. This guy gives me major "protagonist vibes"—I should definitely stay away from him and the drama he brings.

Now that I think about it, the guy is a true outlier. You see, children usually awaken an ability related to their parents, but that isn't always the case. Children of those with no abilities can actually awaken their own unique powers. The reason my sister said people can estimate one of my abilities is that my father is a Monarch. Monarchs have superior genes; their children usually awaken an ability based on theirs, and some even awaken the exact same one.

However, this rebellious idiot had to go and awaken an ability that has nothing to do with his father's. His father is the Immortal Monarch. They call him that because they're afraid to just call him a "cat." His ability gives him nine lives, but the broken part is that when he dies, he doesn't just come back—he restarts completely healed with full stamina and Mana. To him, it's like the fight has just started. I've heard certain conditions have to be met to restore his lives after resting, but I don't know the specifics. Nothing has ever been able to kill him five times in a row. I wonder who would win if he and my father fought to the death.

Besides Tkos, there are others I should pay attention to. Hope Sierra—if she is anything like her mother, she's going to give me a massive headache. Xander Mygave—yep, I should definitely stay away from those smiling, cheerful idiots. It might be contagious. I heard the entire family is like that.

Then there's Amil Cover. This guy gives me the shivers. He comes from a family where the men look like women. Just looking at his beautiful face makes me feel weird. I heard even his voice is girlish; it must be all the inbreeding in that family that messed them up. I feel bad for every man who marries into that family. The confusion... those poor, innocent souls.

Finally, Tamari Crimson. With her red hair, she's giving me major Kushina vibes. For a family that doesn't have fire or blood affinities, their last name is weird.

"Listen well, for I will not be repeating myself!"

I turned to see a very masculine man standing on a high platform, looking far too smug for someone who is probably just an extra.

"The rules of this exam are simple. You will be judged based on your points and your performance. Performance involves using your knowledge of survival—identifying edible versus poisonous plants and navigating the wild. Keep in mind: even if you gather enough points to reach the top ten, if your performance is lacking, you will fail. Conversely, if you have few points but excellent performance, you will pass—though you'll be monitored during the first term to determine if you stay.

I recommend securing both points and high performance to better your chances. Points are earned through survival skills and by defeating creatures; higher-ranked creatures yield more points. Killing your fellow students grants you half of their points.

Because some of you have parents who would burn this academy down if you died, we have implemented a safety measure: if you face a life-threatening attack, you will be immediately teleported out, but you will lose half your points.

You may team up, but you will be judged individually—there are no points for 'good teamwork.' Weapons will be provided by the academy; you cannot enter with your family's secret heirlooms. The exam ends in 30 days or when only one student remains. If you are poisoned, you will have a small window to find an antidote before being disqualified. If you are too injured to continue, or if you simply starve and want to quit, say 'I give up' and you will be teleported out. It will be shameful, but do what you have to do. Now, gather your weapons and prepare to enter!"
