Chapter 6 - The First Night

Night didn't fall.

It settled.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Like something spreading across the forest rather than descending over it.

The last traces of light faded into that strange, heavy dimness, never fully dark, but far from safe.

Kai moved first.

"We don't stay exposed."

Rion glanced around. "Yeah, no argument there."

Lira stayed close as they searched, her movements quieter now, more cautious. The energy from earlier, the panic, the urgency, had shifted into something else.

Fatigue.

And fear that had time to breathe.

"…There," Kai said.

A cluster of fallen branches leaned naturally against the base of a thick tree, forming a partial cover. Not perfect, but better than open ground.

Rion stepped forward, testing one of the branches. "It'll hold… for now."

"For now is enough," Kai replied.

They worked quickly.

Not efficiently.

Not expertly.

But with purpose.

Rion snapped smaller branches, stacking them along the open side to form a rough barrier. Kai reinforced the structure, wedging pieces into place to make it harder to see inside.

Lira gathered leaves, large, broad ones, and layered them along the ground.

"…It's not much," she said quietly.

Kai shook his head. "It doesn't have to be. Just enough to hide us. Break our outline."

Rion smirked faintly. "You've definitely thought about this before."

Kai didn't answer.

Because he hadn't.

But thinking was all they had.

When they finished, they sat close.

Closer than before.

Not by choice.

By instinct.

The forest pressed in around them.

The dim light cast long, distorted shadows that didn't quite match the shapes they came from.

Nothing moved.

And yet

Everything felt like it could.

At any moment.

"…Listen," Lira whispered.

They did.

And this time

They heard it clearly.

Not one sound.

Many.

Layered.

Overlapping.

Distant calls that didn't echo the way they should.

Low growls that seemed to come from more than one direction at once.

Something high pitched, almost like a cry, but stretched, distorted, unnatural.

Rion's jaw tightened. "…That's not just one thing."

Kai shook his head slightly.

"No."

The sounds shifted again.

Closer.

Then farther.

Then closer again.

Like distance didn't matter.

Like direction didn't exist.

Lira pulled her knees closer to her chest.

"…How many are out there…?"

No one answered.

Because the question didn't have a number.

Rion leaned back against the tree, arms crossed, but his eyes stayed open, scanning constantly.

"…If something comes at us," he said, keeping his voice low, "we're not exactly equipped to fight it."

"We're not fighting," Kai replied. "We stay hidden."

"And if hiding doesn't work?"

Kai looked at him.

"…Then we run."

Rion let out a quiet breath. "Yeah… figured."

Time passed.

Or at least

It felt like it did.

There was no sky visible now.

No stars.

No moon.

Just that same thick darkness pressing in from every side.

Lira's voice broke the silence.

"…Kai."

He turned slightly. "Yeah?"

She hesitated.

"…What if we never find a way back?"

The question landed heavier than anything else that night.

Rion didn't interrupt this time.

Didn't deflect.

He just listened.

Kai was quiet for a moment.

Careful.

Measured.

"…Then we survive here," he said.

Not comforting.

But honest.

Lira's eyes lowered. "…I don't want to."

Kai's expression softened slightly.

"I know."

A pause.

Then, more quietly

"But you don't have to want to."

She looked at him.

"You just have to keep going."

Silence followed.

But it wasn't as heavy.

Not for her.

Rion shifted slightly. "…You always sound like you know what you're doing."

Kai glanced at him. "I don't."

Rion huffed quietly. "Could've fooled me."

"I just decide faster," Kai said.

"…Yeah," Rion muttered. "That sounds about right."

But there was no sarcasm in it.

Not this time.

The sounds in the forest grew louder.

Then softer.

Then louder again.

Unpredictable.

Unnatural.

Something moved nearby

Close enough that all three of them froze instantly.

A slow rustle.

Measured.

Not hunting.

Not rushing.

Just… passing.

Right outside their shelter.

Lira held her breath.

Rion's hand tightened into a fist.

Kai didn't move.

Didn't even blink.

The sound lingered

Then faded.

Gone.

But not gone enough.

And then

Far beyond the trees

Something else stirred.

Not a sound.

Not movement.

A presence.

Faint.

But distinct.

High above

Or far away.

It was hard to tell.

A soft glow flickered through the forest.

Barely visible.

Gone if you looked directly at it.

But there.

Watching.

The same feeling from before.

From the plane.

From the silence between worlds.

Kai's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Do you feel that?"

Rion frowned. "Feel what?"

Lira stiffened.

"…Something's there."

They couldn't see it clearly.

Couldn't define it.

But it was real.

And it was aware.

The glow pulsed once.

Faint.

Distant.

Then disappeared.

As if it had seen enough.

Kai didn't relax.

Neither did the others.

Because the worst part wasn't that something was out there.

It was that something had noticed them

And chosen not to act.

Not yet.

"…Get some rest," Kai said quietly.

Rion shook his head. "Yeah, that's not happening."

"Try anyway."

Lira leaned slightly against Kai, her eyes heavy despite everything.

"…Wake me if anything changes."

"I will."

Rion shifted, still watching the dark.

"I've got first watch."

Kai nodded once.

"…Don't let your guard down."

Rion gave a faint, humorless smile.

"Wasn't planning to."

The forest didn't sleep.

The sounds never fully stopped.

And neither did the feeling of being watched.

Three siblings.

Hiding in a fragile shelter.

Listening to a world that didn't belong to them.

While something unseen

Listened back.
