Chapter 89 – Moonlight
They kept walking along the shoreline.
They watched the small waves break gently against the sand, leaving that white mark—like a lip of foam that slowly dissolved as the water pulled back.
The moon was waning.
From the horizon, its pale glow reflected across the sea.
The stars seemed to shine brighter than ever.
The two walked slowly.
There were moments when they talked.
And others when they simply stayed silent.
Walter's spirit calmed a little.
Bruno didn't give him any lecture.
He didn't try to explain life or tell him how he should see things.
Because that wasn't what Walter needed.
Walter just needed someone to walk beside him… without judging him.
The sand crunched under their steps as Bruno had a thousand thoughts racing through his head.
All about Walter.
Thoughts that were driving him crazy.
At one point, Walter stopped.
Bruno stopped too.
Walter lifted his gaze to the sky.
His eyes looked deeply melancholic.
The breeze gently moved the strands of hair falling across his forehead.
The light of the waning moon illuminated his face.
Bruno watched him.
And it was driving him completely insane.
Look at those eyes full of sadness…
Look at those lips…
Bruno stepped closer.
He dropped the coffee into the sand.
With one arm, he wrapped around Walter's waist.
With the other hand, he softly caressed his cheek.
And he kissed him.
The tenderest kiss that could possibly exist.
There couldn't have been a tenderer kiss.
It was at the exact right moment.
It was in the exact right place.
The only question left was: Was it with the exact right person?
Bruno pulled away slowly.
His hands lingered on Walter for one more second.
Then he let go.
Silence crashed between them like a stone sinking into deep water.
Walter remained rooted in place.
His arms hung limp at his sides.
He hadn't moved an inch.
His eyes stared wide, shocked.
He hadn't rejected the kiss.
But he hadn't returned it either.
He'd simply frozen there… as if his mind couldn't process what had just happened.
Bruno looked at him.
And in that instant, something inside him contracted sharply.
What have I just done…?
The certainty he'd felt a second ago evaporated.
Now there was only a tight, uncomfortable ache in his chest.
A small, gnawing fear.
Walter kept staring at him.
His lips parted slightly, as if words were forming.
But nothing came out.
He didn't know what to say.
He didn't know what to do.
He didn't even know what he felt.
The sound of the waves filled the space between them.
Walter dropped his gaze for a moment.
Then lifted it back to Bruno.
But he still looked utterly lost.
As if something deep inside him had shifted… and he had no idea how to respond.
---
Bruno was the first to pull away.
His hands left Walter's waist.
For a second, neither of them said anything.
The sound of the sea filled the space between them.
Walter kept staring straight ahead, eyes still wide open, as if his mind was still trying to process what had just happened.
Bruno swallowed hard.
Suddenly everything felt strange.
Too quiet.
Too awkward.
Walter took a small step back.
He said nothing.
Bruno didn't either.
They looked at each other for an instant… then both looked away at the same time.
Without a word, they started walking back toward the SUV.
The sand crunched under their footsteps.
Neither spoke.
Neither knew what to say.
The moment that had seemed perfect just minutes ago now felt… uncomfortable.
Almost embarrassing.
Bruno opened the car door.
Walter climbed into the passenger seat.
Bruno walked around the vehicle and sat behind the wheel.
He started the engine.
The sound of the engine broke the silence… but not the discomfort.
They pulled out of the beach parking lot.
The lights of the road began flashing across the windshield.
Walter stared out the window.
Bruno kept his eyes on the road.
Neither looked at the other.
Neither spoke.
The silence inside the SUV was heavy.
Bruno opened his mouth once.
He wanted to say something.
Anything.
But the words wouldn't come.
He closed it again.
And they kept driving.
The SUV finally left the beach road and entered the residential area.
The city lights surrounded them again.
The silence inside the vehicle remained heavy.
Bruno drove a few more minutes until the car stopped in front of Walter's large mansion.
The engine stayed on.
Neither spoke at first.
Walter kept staring out the window.
Bruno gripped the steering wheel lightly.
He took a deep breath.
"Walter…" he finally said.
His voice came out low.
Walter didn't respond.
He kept looking outside.
Bruno swallowed hard.
"I'm sorry."
The words came out with difficulty.
"I shouldn't have done that."
He lowered his gaze.
Shame squeezed his chest.
"I didn't mean… to put you in an uncomfortable situation."
Silence filled the car interior again.
Walter kept looking out the window.
But after a few seconds, he moved.
He slowly turned his head.
He looked at Bruno.
Bruno had his head down.
He couldn't look at him.
His heart felt heavy.
Broken.
Then Walter leaned toward him.
And kissed him.
It was a brief kiss.
Soft.
But clear.
When he pulled away, Bruno lifted his gaze, surprised.
Walter looked at him for a few seconds.
He still seemed confused.
"We'll talk tomorrow," he said quietly.
Then he opened the SUV door.
Got out of the car.
Closed the door.
And walked toward the mansion entrance.
Bruno stayed seated behind the wheel.
Watching Walter walk away.
Still not understanding what had just happened.
Hook: But something in the darkness was already moving, ready to change everything…
