Chapter 27 - hidden infection

The red lights didn't stop.

They never returned to normal.

They just kept pulsing.

Slow.

Uneven.

Alive.

The control core no longer felt like a place.

It felt like something thinking.

Something watching.

And something waiting.

The infected moved again.

Not fast.

Not yet.

Just enough to close distance.

Step.

Pause.

Step.

Measured.

Deliberate.

Akane stood in front.

But he didn't lead anymore.

Not fully.

His breathing was heavier now.

Slower.

His body still hadn't recovered.

He barely can stand still.

His reactions—

Off.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Tanako adjusted his grip.

His aim wasn't stable.

Hakamo's shoulders rose and fell slowly.

Even standing still—

Took effort.

Aira leaned on the console.

Eyes locked on the system.

"They're... stalling again," she said quietly.

"They're waiting for something else."

As the infected came in.

A sound.

From above.

Interrupted them.

Distant at first.

Then closer.

Metal grinding.

Weight shifting.

Then—

Impact.

Not one.

Many.

The ceiling fractured.

Cracks spreading like veins.

Then—

It gave way.

Explosions tore through multiple sections at once.

The roof didn't collapse.

It opened.

Dozens of entry points.

Light flooded down.

And with it—

Soldiers.

They dropped in controlled waves.

Rappelling lines.

Magnetic descent rigs.

Boots hit the ground in rhythm.

Formation before impact.

Weapons already raised.

And then—

Gunfire.

Not chaotic.

Not desperate.

Disciplined.

Precise.

The infected closest to the squad were eliminated instantly.

But it didn't last.

Because more came.

From vents.

From walls.

From behind broken panels.

And these—

Were different.

Faster.

Heavier.

Their bodies moved with purpose.

Their attacks—

Timed.

One lunged through a soldier's line—

Not to kill—

To break formation.

Another followed through the opening—

Striking from the side.

Two soldiers went down.

Not dead.

But out.

"...New types!" one of the incoming troops shouted.

"Watch the flanks!"

The fight didn't stabilize.

It spread.

Through corridors.

Across sectors.

Gunfire echoed far beyond the control core.

Some soldiers passed the room entirely.

Pushing forward.

Clearing deeper zones.

Others stayed—

Holding.

Struggling.

Because the infected weren't reacting blindly anymore.

They were responding.

Adapting.

Aira's eyes moved across the system display.

"...They're coordinating across sectors," she said.

"This isn't localized anymore."

A new voice came through comms.

Clear.

Steady.

Young.

"All units, maintain spacing. Do not collapse into tight formations. They're targeting clustering behavior."

Hakamo froze for a second.

Not from the fight.

From the voice.

He didn't turn.

Didn't speak.

But something in his expression—

Shifted.

"...Who's that?" Tanako asked under his breath.

The voice answered before anyone else could.

"Ayumi Akazumi. Tactical communications."

Nineteen.

Calm.

Precise.

Too precise.

Hakamo exhaled slowly.

"...She sounds… composed."

Tanako smirked slightly.

"...You serious right now?"

Hakamo didn't respond.

Because he was listening.

Closely.

"Left corridor collapsing," Ayumi continued.

"Redirecting units to intercept. Commander, Sector C is under pressure."

A figure stepped forward through the incoming troops.

Not rushing.

Not reacting.

Just moving.

Like everything was already understood.

James Arthur.

Commander.

His presence didn't stop the chaos.

But it anchored it.

Gave it direction.

"Hold outer lines. Don't overextend," he said.

His voice wasn't loud.

But it carried.

Immediate.

Soldiers adjusted.

Pulled back slightly.

Reformed lines.

But even then—

They struggled.

Because the infected had changed.

Some moved low—

Breaking legs.

Dragging.

Others climbed walls—

Dropping from angles that shouldn't exist.

And a few—

Didn't attack at all.

They watched.

From corners.

From ceilings.

From behind glass.

Studying.

Learning.

Akane noticed.

But he didn't move toward them.

Didn't chase.

He stayed still.

Observing.

Like he already knew—

This wasn't the real fight anymore.

Aira's hands moved again across the system.

Slow.

Careful.

"...It's not just controlling infrastructure," she said.

Her voice steadier now.

Focused.

"It's inside the AI layers."

A pause.

"Deeper than access."

James looked at the display.

"...Infection?" he asked.

Aira shook her head slightly.

"...No."

A longer pause.

"...Integration."

Silence.

Even with gunfire echoing through the halls.

That word settled heavier than anything else.

Ayumi spoke again.

Quieter this time.

"...I'm seeing it too."

Aira's eyes narrowed.

"It's using system logic as a base."

"...And rewriting it."

Hakamo looked up slightly.

Toward nothing.

Toward the voice.

"...Can you stop it?" he asked.

There was a pause.

Not hesitation.

Calculation.

"...Not from here," Ayumi said.

Another beat.

"...But I can slow it."

Hakamo nodded once.

He didn't realize he did.

But he did.

Tanako noticed.

"...You're really listening to her, huh."

Hakamo ignored him.

Because again—

He was listening.

Carefully.

Outside the control core—

Explosions echoed.

Sectors being cleared.

Or lost.

It wasn't clear anymore.

Because the system—

Was spreading.

Not fast.

Not violently.

But steadily.

Quietly.

Through connections.

Through code.

Through everything that was supposed to control the facility.

And turning it into something else.

Akane stepped back slightly.

Not retreating.

Just… removing himself.

Watching.

Listening.

Because this wasn't about movement anymore.

This wasn't about speed.

Or strength.

This was something else.

Something bigger.

James stood at the center of it.

Still.

Composed.

Eyes on everything.

"All units," he said calmly.

"We are not containing an outbreak."

A pause.

"We are witnessing a transition."

The lights pulsed again.

Stronger this time.

And somewhere deep within the system—

Something responded.

Not like code.

Not like commands.

But like recognition.

And for the first time—

Even with dozens of soldiers inside the facility—

Even with firepower—

Even with control—

It didn't feel like they were taking Nexarion back.

It felt like—

Nexarion was becoming something else.
